Why the FBI Still Wants to Keep Native Leader Leonard Peltier in Prison at 79

Leonard Peltier, the longest-held Indigenous political prisoner in the U.S., had his first parole hearing in over a decade on Monday. Peltier, an activist who started organizing with the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the 1970s, has spent nearly 50 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Nick Tilsen, president and CEO of NDN Collective, joins the show to discuss why the US government has continuously denied Peltier’s parole and the decades-long fight for his freedom.

Never seen her here. President Trump came. We missed the opportunity to have his ear. Instead, Nick Tilsen and his crew rented the vans we used to get at a great rate, went to Mt Rushmore, destroyed the vans, used them to block the road in order to ruin the event for everyone. If that wasn't enough, he roughed up a Pennington County Deputy. Tilsen weighs 350. SHE weighed 120. Real heroes here. Now, we can't rent from the agency any vans to haul people from Rapid City to see relatives on the Rez. Bring folks to town for treatment. Etc. I warned the charity I was involved with to steer clear. We were doing just fine with small donors. But they had to get some Soros cash. Now, it's all in ruins. Just like Wounded Knee Village. I'm the son of a "Native American" (Choctaw), and father to Native Amazonian children (Shuar/Kichwa). it's wonderful to see BN, especially lovely, Rania, giving some time to indigenous peoples. They get so little of it. I leave the US (I only live in the States to take care of my elderly mom) for the Ecuadorian Amazon to visit my family in a couple weeks. Each time I return to the Amazon I see more and more destruction--a sharp decline towards the deep abyss of "Modern" (read: Imperial, conquerors) society. It breaks my heart to see my kids collapsing into this cognitive dissonance. As a side note, and this's not meant as a competition or to degrade, but I'd highly suggest that the indigenous peoples of Central and South America live in an abject poverty (and lowest life expectancy) more pronounced than here in the US. Yes, it's bad here, I get that, but when you live under a Third World country, you live in the Fourth World. You not only take on the Third World (the country you live under), but as well, the First (the US, in particular. See: Monroe Doctrine). Ecuador splits the Shuar and Achuar with Peru. Ecuador lost almost half its territory to Peru in the early 1940's. My Shuar father-in-law fought in one of the minor military skirmishes between Ecuador and Peru since the split, and was wounded in the leg. He said when he was fighting he encountered Shuar fighting for Peru. This's what indigenous peoples deal within the Third World in the Americas, SOUTH of the border. I doubt the veracity by Tilsen to his claims of lowest life expectancy and abject poverty in the "Western" hemisphere (in the Northern hemishere, for sure). I've seen both, and the "Native South Americans" exceed his claim, unfortunately. Free Peltier!

Yes, colonial imperialism continues its painful journey throughout South America, Africa, and of course, circles around to those people who seem to benefit. Not the elites, necessarily, though they also damage themselves, but the ignorant "beneficiaries" who give no thought, are taught racism & who, themselves are left in the dust when no longer needed.

The land, and therefore the resources that allow for human survival, was stolen through trickery, betrayal, mass murder, and heinous atrocities towards many, many First Nations peoples. And these betrayals continue today, as shown by this report on Peltier. Native Americans aren't Asians. Just because they share a portion of DNA with modern Asians does not make them Asians. @@jojo5715 My best friend ranches 7 miles from Peltier's Village. He's always been a known scoundrel who committed violence against his own people. I know some Lakota Warriors. They are the ones bringing a buffalo to the Wounded Knee community center for Wateca. They are the ones driving elders 150 miles for dialysis. They are the ones hooking the whole Reservation to good water. Don't believe a word I say. Just research the name Anna Mae Aquash. And when you get to the part where she's accused of being a Federal snitch, ask yourself, even if that's true, did she deserve to be raped and shot in the head at Sheep Mountain, while praying for her daughters? If so, Peltier gets the credit. There's a lifetime of homework for you.

I am the child (68 yr) of a boarding school parent and remember the AIM movement, being familiar with how our brothers and sisters stood up to be a strong voice for all indigenous people throughout the US. The government plot to overtake and dismember their movement was and still is an injustice. Holding Leonard Peltier and not releasing him is an ongoing injustice to all the indigenous people. This same federal government has wiped out tribes men, women and children for over 400 years, depriving them of their way of life and life its self. Holding Leonard is nothing more than a continuous injustice of the US. FREE LEONARD PELTIER

Just like Tecumseh. An American who was villified in life for protecting the American Indian. I have pftem wondered why American Indian tribes do not contribute to create a top notch legal team which protected their culture and resources. Laws would be revisited and legal actions taken where treaties had been violated. The most effective tool against situations like this is the press.

Mostly because every single treaty the US government has made with Native people has been broken. Go back just a few years to Standing Rock Protests in the Dakotas. Watch the videos of what Obama and 45 allowed to happen there for months. When the Buffalo came, the colonists sent GUNS. The colonists sent dogs to attack. They used water cannons on protestors in sub zero temperatures. They used rubber bullets in sub zero temperature. They sprayed camps with mace and chemicals. All because oil companies want to run a pipeline through the only water supply that is available to those people. Thousands of miles of pipeline for crude oil AND THEY ALL LEAK.

Same process of dispose of natives happened also in Argentina with force. The last big one occurred 1860-1880 when military forces massacred - expelled Tehuelche Nation from their ancentral lands (known as Pampa Humeda or Wet Plains). Nowadays one of the fifth largest, fertile agricultural soils on the world, owned enterily for 800 rich families, who harvest annually thousands of tons of food staples, destined almost exclusively for exports, making food scarce with highs prices for ordinary argentinians, the remaining few surviving natives, mestizos, and poor people of europeans descends.
