Why the Emax Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 is not for Beginners

The Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 is marketed for beginners and customers are being further mislead by seeing it bundled in a Ready to Fly kit. The THF2 is definitely not for beginners.

    A couple more months and expect your VTX to go bad. It won’t be your fault. It just happens. Did you get yours used? Freestyle should be more than $100. $120 + tax + shipping which is roughly $140. You’ll eventually need propellers and motors too so figure another $50 ish at least.

    @@Funcentric I bought 2 x of the quads(THFS2) and 20 batteries(so it is like having 10 packs). I also bought 10 packs of the OEM props 5 in red and 5 in black. I think it is a great way to learn the flight dynamics of FPV. Is it for a person that never flew a drone before? No, and I agree with you on that aspect. Do I run my VTX on 200mw all the time? No because most of the time I am flying proximity so I adjust it based on need. If I lose a quad(I did lose one because the built in beeper sucks) then I am only out of $120(shipping included). I otherwise I really would not be able to FPV. Also, I did the xt30 mod and fly 15+minutes on a 2s 18650 pack micro long range chill cruiser... Overall this quad is not for everybody(is any quad for everybody?). Not really recommended for completely new pilots. I however was looking for a freestyle/racer style quad outside of just toy drones and I have very limited income.

    @@Funcentric UPDATE: I had this THFS II since tuesday(my 2nd one) and I went to take off today and it would just flip and one motor is not working. I was even trying to say something nice about this quad and it won't even fly on day 3. EDIT: Upon investigating the source of why a motor was not working I found a loose wire that had come off the pad on the board. Soldered back the wire and the drone is still working. Did not get to fly it on day 3, but flew 10 times at least on day 4 after the repairs.

    Thanks, if I had more quads that fit this class for comparison, I'd totally be open about recommending something. However, I hesitate to recommend any quads that I don't personally own myself. Even the ones I have, I make a point to run through several hundred batteries before saying a word about them. Too many videos out there of people taking quads through a few packs and then discussing it. It's good for viewers to know specs and such, but it doesn't have much value as far as ownership for people who actually want to buy the quad. I as others have looked at the Emax Phantom as it's in the same class. The cost is comparable and it comes from a company that has a much better reputation for quality. Again though, I haven't researched enough to know the ins and outs of ownership in the long run to really say what to get. This video is more as a warning for those who are already considering the THF2 and aren't aware of the ownership details. The other quads I have include the GEPRC SkipHD3 but it's not really comparable to the THF2 nor are the NBD BNF whoops and home built ones that I have. I also own a GEPRC Cygnet 3 and again, not in the same class of quad. I buy all these quads myself for me to use personally. These aren't review quads so I'm unfortunately not going to have a lot to say on a list of other quads.

    It was my first FPV. Yep, excellent points, however, I learned tons by having this for its short life span. In the beginning, I crashed many times as expected which meant something broke. Went back to the table and repaired. This cycle continued with each flight for quite some time. Mostly the motors, as you mentioned but I found them from getFPV. The props also cut a few of the motor wires, so that too happened often. Finally, I had a few sessions where I made it through the 3 pairs of batteries. It was a fun fly, up and over trees but never too far before the signal dropped. Had to stay within 30 yards or so but that ended when I had a big crash. Overall, learning to solder on new motors, which seemed constantly, taught me a bunch and prepared me for the next level of drone. Loved it when it worked, but doubtful that I will ever purchase an EMAX product again!!

The DJI system isn’t just a bump up. Its a whole new game. Most toothpicks won’t be DJI capable. So you’re talking about a very different flight experience as far as location and type of flying. Generally, the micro quads you can fly pretty much anywhere and people won’t care but the DJI will most likely be a full sized quad which will take some planning.

  • @CarbonGlassMan
    @CarbonGlassMan3 жыл бұрын

    I replaced all 4 motors on my THF2 because I thought a bad motor was why it was flying like it had a flat tire. My problem turned out to be a damaged gyro. But I did have to replace 1 motor after replacing the bottom plate because like you said, the heat shrink doesn't go all the way to the windings, so one of the wires broke at the start of the winding, ruining the motor just from handling it. The THF2 was my first real quad. After a few weeks and several crashes with the THF2, I bought the TH2 and really did most of my flying on that. The TH2 on 1s is a good beginner quad because you can crash it over and over and not break it. I broke the THF2 a lot when I'd crash it and I did have to learn how to replace the antennas, frame, battery connectors, and motor. After spending a lot of money on replacement parts to try and get the THF2 to stop flying like it had a flat tire (wobbling in the air at all times), it turns out I had damaged the gyro in a crash right after getting the thing. So I agree. The THF2 is not for beginners. It's for people with a little experience flying quads. The Tinyhawk 2 is the beginner quad. I should have bought the TH2 first, then upgraded to the THF2 once I could fly the TH2 well. My THF2 is in pieces right now. I tried replacing the gyro but it's not working at all now, so I'm going to try and find a different AIO board to replace the Emax board. I'll add a TBS Unify pro32 nano and a Crossfire nano, and while I'm at I'm going to find a better nano camera for it. I can reuse the frame and motors. It should be a fun quad again.

  • @Funcentric

    @Funcentric

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you’re willing to go through all that trouble replacing parts, you may want to consider getting a more substantial frame. The THF2 doesn’t accept a standard FC natively. It’s proprietary and would require possibly more work than you may feel it is worth. A lot of people commit themselves to the thf2 frame because it’s all they know and possibly because they feel they’ve spent so much time on research and it kinda owes them to operate. Or maybe they’ve invested a lot into propellers. With the work you’d be putting into the thf2, you could essentially do the same with another frame and get a much better and more reliable result. Remember there are no other options for motors on the THF2 and they’re way delicate.

  • @CarbonGlassMan

    @CarbonGlassMan

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Funcentric The motors are why I would use the frame since it has the 3 bolt pattern in it and I happen to have 8 good 1103 emax motors. I enjoy tinkering and make carbon fiber parts for a living and I really like how the THF2 flies and how quiet it is. Honestly I don't have a single carbon framed quad that I haven't modified the frame on so that part is not a big deal. The downsides of the THF2 in my opinion are the FC, the battery connector, and the control link and video range.

    Hey, sorry for the late reply. Didn't see this come in. Yeah, a prematurely failing VTX is basically the rule when it comes to this quad. It's just a matter of time. VTX's can fail on all quads, but for the freestyle, it seems that it's way way way premature. I don't know why it fails. It's probably just a quality control issue. I am not a sponsored channel so I don't have a ton of experience with all sorts of quads. Before I can recommend anything, I'd have to know more about how you fly and what you intend to do. I fly whoops generally. My 5" is a Nazgul. I don't have walls full of this stuff. I do have a video about brushed whoops vs brushless if you have a question on that.

    Hey Funcentric! You helped me a while ago and I like your honest opinions so here I am again! :) So I'm looking to get a new whoop (my TH2 broke, and I'm pretty sure its because of reasons you also know about) and I think I got it narrowed down to the Mobula6 or the NewBeeDrone Hummingbird F4 Pro. The problem with the Mobula is that it looks perfect except that it seems to have some quality control issues. And I know how high you are on NewBeeDrone. (Sometimes I suspect you are secretly an employee of theirs always boosting their products LOL!) And their Hummingbird F4 pro is priced competitively to the Mobula, and the performance is equal if not better from what I have seen. But their is one common problem with the F4 pro that many people seem to encounter. This reviewer (not me) says it well: This is by far the best flying race whoop I have ever had - all three of them were. It has an excellent tune out of the factory, it has plenty of power, it has all the features you want, and it wins races. The improved gyro puts this whoop head and shoulders above all the competition. The quad-blade Azi props on those wonderfully responsive NBD motors are a winning combination. The camera is clear and handles low-light racing better than any other in its weight class. The LEDs make it easy on race directors and spectators to determine who is flying what whoop. Were it not for an absolutely fatal flaw this would be the single best whoop you could buy and it would not be close. But one unlucky hit will kill the receiver on this whoop. It is a design flaw that Newbeedrone has been trying to fix through multiple board revisions and it's still there. I have lost 3 of them to this flaw. Once you get that RXLOSS message in your OSD it's either solder on an external receiver (which adds weight that largely ruins the flying qualities of the aircraft) or forget it. And you only have a one month warranty - which for a craft with a known design flaw is absolutely unacceptable. That's why this whoop will break your heart - it is so very close to perfection but because of the serious unresolved hardware flaws I CANNOT recommend this product. When this whoop is working it performs almost flawlessly. But if one gate hit can kill your whoop then all the fantastic performance in the world cannot make up for a complete lack of durability. Maybe someday Newbeedrone will get this product right - they are so tantalizingly close. But until that happens, steer away from this product unless you can live with an external receiver or there is a revision that fixes the dead RX issue. It seems like the design of where the RX is, is bad. What do you say to this? Should I still get the Hummingbird F4 pro? The Mobula? Another NewBeeDrone whoop? Or another whoop altogether? Thanks!

    I wish I worked for nbd! Haha. To date, my nbd Beenbrain BL which goes by a different name now has gone through over 1,000 battery packs without issue. One of the motor connectors came loose but I was able to secure it. The flight controller is flawless from my experience. No issues with the receiver nor VTX at all. My mobula7 and other quads that I have built using the Crazybee F4 FC (various versions) have all gone kaput. They’re cheap which is why I keep rebuying them but eventually I’ll try something else. The FC just isn’t reliable. The nbd humming bird I believe doesn’t use betaflight. I think that’s the one that uses silverware which I’ve never used but hear is great out of the box. You can’t really make changes to it so just fly as is unless you know how to program and stuff. If I were you, I’d get a nbd product. Of course! Haha. There are people on Facebook groups who have reported issues but nbd is based in San Diego which is local to me in the USA which is a huge plus for me. Although I’m Chinese myself, I can’t reply on my fellow brethren to take care of me when issues come up with their products. Yeah, I'd consider those "reviews" more like tests. It's not really a review if you've only put a few packs through it. I personally think you need at least 50 packs through it to get to really know the longevity of it which is what people really want to know - not just pretty video footage. Entertaining, but not as useful. Don't get me wrong. I like those videos too, but gotta watch them knowing what they really are. Many of them are sales pitches.

The spacing of the holes would be different if you used a motor with 4 holes so you may end up drilling 3 extra holes. Don’t go higher than the stock kv because the amp draw of the stock one may already be too high on 2S for the thf2.

    Crashing is the norm. I just broke the camera on my GepRC Cygnet3 yesterday and a connection on my VTX came loose on my SkipHD3. With those though, the parts are purchased separately. VTX for the SkipHD3 is only $17. When the VTX goes out on your THF2, you won't be able to find a stock Emax VTX sold separately unless it's used and you certainly don't want to spend $60+ on a whole new replacement board, so best to go with an aftermarket VTX for $17-35.

    Yup, that sounds about right. The issue you'll come across is that if/when it breaks, you'll feel like you've invested in it so much already, probably have a ton of propellers, maybe extra parts and have spent so much time getting to know the quad and will wonder if you should really throw it all away or just spend the $70 on a new FC. Last weekend, my RX antenna chopped off. As you know from my video, replacing it is a pain. I spent at least an hour preparing the new antenna and trying to solder it on. In my attempt to solder the ground, I snagged the tip off the antenna that solders to the board. I've pretty much had enough so may not give it another go. Seems to be wasting my time on this when I could be flying other stuff or making more KZread videos. I wish someone had made a video like this for me too! Haha. There's just too much out there praising this quad w/o really discussing the ins and outs of actual ownership (very different from just running a few packs and spewing out specs) like you see everywhere else.

    When it comes time to change out a motor, just be careful of those wires and as I mentioned in the video be careful not to break your antenna. I changed the channel to race band 7 and upped the power to 200mw and I'm able to fly around a good portion of my neighborhood. I would estimate around .2 to .3 miles. I might keep it at 100mw from now on after hearing about the vtx though. I am a bit curious though, would it be possible to put a small heat sync on the vtx? assuming heat is what kills it? As for the the antennas, just makes sure they’re not in the way of the props when you take off. Mine got snagged the other day by something and ripped off at the tip. I decided to build a Shutterbug85. It's all over KZread. This guy specializes in the small stuff and it runs on 2S. I generally wouldn't normally recommend a build for a first or second quad, but in this case, the components are already selected and the tuning is already done also. A lot of people get too quickly into building that they forget that building is only 1/3 of the equation. Components working well together is crucial. If you don't know why you have what sized propeller to match what sized motor going with what battery voltage, then it's best to get a BNF unless it's like the Shutterbug85 where it's already been built and done. Tuning is also crucial. If you're building from scratch something brand new, you won't know how to tune or even what to look for. Not frowning on building. Just that experience is necessary so you know what you're aiming for in a build. The Shutterbug is pretty straight forward and uses just a single AIO board, so it's not too difficult as far as the build portion is concerned. Flies amazingly well and I'm recommending this b/c the power is definitely there and great control! Mr Shutterbug definitely knows what he's doing. I recommend following him too.

    @@romekearney403 You may come across people that will tell you to build your first quad. Don't do it (unless it's a kit). Building is only 1 of 3 steps needed for a build. People focus so much on the building part that they forget about component selection and tuning which are both essential. Not only that, but if you haven't flown enough, you won't know what to look for in a build and won't be able to appreciate what you have. Until you can determine roughly what to expect with a 3-bladed propeller vs 2-bladed at what pitch matched with what motor size running on what battery size, I'd highly recommend sticking with a BNF (bind and fly) quad that's already had research done to fit the parts together and is already tuned from the factory. Your first quad is like your first girlfriend. You're not supposed to marry her. It just helps you figure out what you like and don't like and then you can move onto some improvements. Until then, you won't really know what you want and no one can tell you b/c everyone wants different things. Different expectations, different tolerance, different style of flying, etc. Some people care more about flight characteristics at the expense of having to take more time away from flying and more time on the bench while others care more about reliability and would rather have more hours in the air.

    Any idea if these issues have been addressed? I’d really like to get into fpv and this one seems perfect for me if it wasn’t for these issues. I really like that I can buy it as a kit and that I don’t have to break the bank. I also like that it is primarily for outdoor use as a lot of the other ones around that price range were for indoor use. Do you know of any other options with similar characteristics and features around the $300 price range? I understand you don’t like recommending drones you have not personally used, but if you know of some similar options for similar prices I will take it with a grain of salt and go do my research first. Thank you for info in the vid it is much appreciated.

    It may sound arrogant, but quads really are disposable. While quads come and go either with repairs, being broken or you just get a new one, they turnover much higher than the goggle and transmitter setup. I would recommend that if you're quite certain you want to get into the hobby, that you look at what type of transmitter and goggles you want and let that be what sets you for the hobby. Don't forget batteries. The batteries for the little quads, 1 and 2S ones will die off quite quickly. They don't last many charges at all. Most likely less than a year. So keep that in mind as you're budgeting. Perhaps Emax is taking the market b/c as you said correctly, there aren't many options out there. Emax parts are available online everywhere which is a plus. Stuff like Happy Model and the like are much harder to come by from China. It's a give and take. I do not know if the Emax Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 has had any of the issues resolved. I haven't been following much. I'd recommend you maybe join a Facebook Group of a model you have in mind, poke around for a couple weeks and see what people are reporting. Don't listen too much of the fanboys who have nothing but great things to say. They've either not had it long enough or would feel bad if their money ended up not being spent well and won't admit issues. I personally like Newbeedrone b/c they're local. They respond to Facebook messages, are a USA based company and have very good backing. Perhaps something from them would be good. I only have had their whoops and have had good experiences.

    Oh, I totally forgot! My favorite quad of all time is a design from Mr. Shutterbug on KZread. He's got excellent content. He's not one of those advertisers that pretend to be reviewers. He's very legit. I used his combination of motors and frame to build this and it's amazing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqmcxNxwepzYeJM.html BetaFPV had built their own 85mm whoop and it used to be $120 but it's no longer made. They have newer versions. If you're comfortable building, you can put something together. Doesn't require soldering if you get the right parts. The motors have connectors. If not, then Beta FPV 85mm non HD whoop would be a good place to start. The reason why is b/c Mr. Shutterbug's discovery of the balance of power vs weight is spot on with the motor selection, the size of the frame and power of the batteries. It's all kind of a science/art to figure that stuff out and he's done it very well.

    2S flight controllers and especially 1S flight controllers are known throughout the industry to be unreliable. They all kinda suck for durability. So it's great while it lasts, but you'll go through a few. Keep that in mind for budgeting purposes. This can be an expensive hobby for that reason. Not b/c the start up costs are a lot (although they can be also) but the ongoing repair costs seem to never end.

  • @Funcentric

    @Funcentric

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would also say that anything advertised for use with multiple voltage of batteries is pretty much a lie. It will most likely only handle the lowest cell count and the higher cell count is a gimmick or marketing thing. A 1S quad is a 1S quad and a 2S quad is a 2S quad. If it says 1S and 2S capable, it's still a 1S quad and I wouldn't advise running it on 2S even if it says it can handle it. If you want a 2S quad, get one that's literally 2S. If it's advertised as a 2S - 3S quad, run it only on 2S. That's me being super conservative and not wanting to break stuff. Some people don't care and are prepared to replace stuff fairly quickly if it breaks. if you're one of those then I guess you can run it on the higher voltage. I personally wouldn't.

    @@Funcentric thank you so much for the reply I appreciate the info and the advice. I decided that I need a bigger faster quad. I have a lot of land and I’m afraid I’d grow out of anything too small very quickly lol. I think I’ve landed on the iflight nazgul5 v2 5” 6s freestyle with the elrs receiver. Although 6s may sound like a bit much for my first fpv quad, I’m not a complete stranger to quads, helicopters, and rc cars and I have enough land out here I think I could figure it out. But I agree quads are like you said “disposable” so I’ve strayed away from the “kit” that way I can have a good transmitter and googles for any drone. I think the nazgul5 v2 5” 6s will be a good fit for me and be a good quad to grow into and last me a bit hopefully. Anyways think you again for the reply! You’re the man! It might sound funny but if you are super new then I’d actually recommend a line of sight indoor quad called the JJRC H36. You can regift it when you are ready to move on. If you end up not liking it, then you’re only out $35USD. My recommendation for an FPV ready to fly kit depends on a few factors. Depends on what youre going for and your situation. Do you plan to really get into this or just test out? Do you have dogs/cats? Do you have a space to fly indoors? A freestyle quad really shouldn’t be your first quad no matter what it is.

    I like GEPRC as a company. They do have good customer service response but not a lot of American companies supply that many of their parts so I do end up having to buy directly from GEPRC which does have a long lead time. Solid product, just maintenance is not so timely. I personally have been loving my BetaFPV 85x pro2 but it’s 2S so much too strong for indoor. With winter coming up, maybe their smaller 65x would be good. Some of their quads use proprietary plugs though so you have to buy their batteries. I like how they respond to product issues though. They’re honest and take responsibility when stuff goes wrong. They handle issues well. So to choose, I’d focus more on the company than the actual quad. Newbeedrone is domestic in San Diego, CA and probably has the best customer service. They have rtf kits too. I’d recommend a betafpv lite radio SE transmitter, goggles of your choice, then a quad with Frsky protocol which is very common. Newbeedrone I think would be my number 1 pick.

    Just be aware that a lot of “review” videos are KZread are paid advertisements disguised as reviews. Tough to navigate. That’s why I’m more focused on the company that produces the quad and how reliable they are for responding to issues. To date, my favorite quad is the betafpv 85x pro2 which is a copy of the inventor’s shutterbug85. It’s the perfect combo of battery power, frame size, propeller size and motor size for outdoor power whooping. The betafpv version is also priced very well at $99. Good for maybe a second quad. Lots of power. Can be toned down using betaflight adjustments if you really want to.
