Simply put: it was a rushed product. The MCU was set up over a period of time through standalone movies, so when the 1st Avengers came out it was the payoff that everyone wanted to see because there was a natural progression of universe building. The DCEU was just sloppily thrown together with too many cooks in the kitchen trying to play catchup. It's sad really.

It's kind of crazy looking at the two sides of the DC Cinematic Universe (Live and Animated). The DC animated universe is pretty good (IMO) and they tend tell good to great stories time after time (Although, at times I think they a bit mature just to be edgy). The latest was the retelling of The Death of Superman. That story has been told over and over again, but their last iteration still managed to make me care about Superman's death and how it effected the rest of the characters. Although I will miss Cavell as Superman and think that he would have been great in the role (look at him in The Man From Uncle), if they would have taken the leash off of his more human side (pun intended).

I am sad to see the wasted potential. Affleck was awesome in his Batman portrayal, Cavill was good in playing the man of Steel, and Gal Gadot is the definition of WOnder Woman. If only the studio spent more time and invest more in the scripts instead of rushing to compete with the MCU

another thing that i noticed is that with marvel, they have kevin feige. sure, feige has to answer to disney but he at least had some control on what he wanted to do and he took the time to plan things carefully. plus, he's a fan of these comic books and movies and knows what audiences want but also wants to subvert things a bit. feige i would say is today's answer to albert r. "cubby" broccoli and harry saltzman as the two producers who gave the film world james bond. they watched over the entire production of the bond franchise until saltzman left after "the man with the golden gun" leaving broccoli on his own as he would pass it to his daughter barbara and stepson michael g. wilson in the 1990s and they've done a solid job since. especially as they had to deal with all sorts of legal bullshit from assholes like kevin mcclory. dc needs people like that who loves the comics and understand these stories but they also need someone who doesn't take shit from anyone including warner brothers.

I've never understood that "stand-alone movies are necessary" argument. Why is it impossible to make the Justice League like Guardians of the Galaxy?

  • @pittland44

    @pittland44

    5 жыл бұрын

@@michaelchristian3608 It's technically not, it wasn't that the stand alone movies were necessary, it's the planning behind them that was. The one thing I would say to remember about Guardians of the Galaxy is by the time we got there we had three Iron Man movies, two Captain America & Thor Movies and one Hulk and one Avengers, so even though the Guardians were a different set of characters who occupied a different corner of the MCU, they were still a part of the larger whole and we had some background with various elements of the movie, including Thanos and the Collector and also they knew where they fit as part of the larger whole. Now, DC was at one point ready to try and launch a Justice League movie as their first foray into these types of movies. The so called Justice League: Mortal, which I have always been curious about. In order to accomplish a truly vital and functional cinematic universe though you have to have a solid centralized plan, and as near as I can tell WB changed their minds a bunch of times throughout the course of the project and tried to course correct on the fly many times. That was why when WB announced the DCEU I thought they were headed for trouble when they said they wanted the project to be more "director driven." That doesn't work for a project of this nature, not because you don't want the directors to add their own unique flair and spin to the movies, but because you need a centralized plan and vision to hold the project together. So in short, you're not wrong to question the necessity of the stand alone movies, they aren't, but the thought and planning to tie all the movies, characters and plot points is 100% essential to a project of this nature. Cheers.

Theres a scene in Justice Leagues "Hereafter" where Batman is mourning Supermans death, and in his quiet monologue you learn more about the heart of Batman. In the middle of his speech an explosion goes off in the distance, and he says "What did you always call it Clark? The Neverending Battle." That line was a direct reference to the Superman clip you showed, giving those 2 characters more depth in 1 MINUTE on an animated show than 2.5-3 movies worth of screen time. Unreal.

Overall, once you boil it down, the key factors was planning and patience. The first Avengers movie and even the likes of Civil War later on worked because Marvel actually took their time in creating a stable foundation for their superhero movies line up. They had a vision, they knew and *planned* where they wanted to take the MCU’s overarching storyline and made it happen in a way that was both fun and consistent across several movies. Also, the first Avengers had already three or more movies preceding it, movies that with the exception of the standalone hulk movie, did reasonably well to attract the audience’s attention to the MCU Characters. So, that’s why the first Avengers movie and Civil War worked out so well, Marvel decided it was more important if not outright *vital* , that we have a few or a couple solo films that tell (for the most part) great or at the least/bare minimum sufficient enough self-contain stories that introduce us to the core Avengers cast before the big team up movie. In contrast, Warner Brothers with the DCEU is an example of what *NOT* to do in creating a shared cinematic universe. By god, I am beyond disappointed with how this DCEU film franchise has been handled even though they had a few successes recently with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam. And this is coming from someone who literally grew up and *still* prefers DC comics and just DC in general over any Marvel properties. When it comes to the DCEU, Warner Bro’s dropped the ball and dropped the ball *hard* with their films line up. Man of Steel while overall meh introduced audiences to a Superman that was virtually unrecognizable from his comic book self (and not in a good way), Batman v Superman (both versions of the movie mind you) was just an absolute dumpster fire of a film in general let alone a superhero film, Suicide Squad was just wrong with *everything* (the nonsensical plot, the copywrited music being outright annoying at points even out of place and not enhancing the movie like in Guardians of the Galaxy, too many characters and not enough character interaction/motivations syndrome, and did I mention the writing or do I need to go on?), and the biggest sin of all the Justice League movie (no ..... just no). Really, the only saving grace for the DCEU at this point is that they should just focus on making good stand alone superhero films *first* before even making another attempt at another team up movie. I mean Shazam, a movie for gods sake about a DC hero that is sometimes shit on as the *magical Superman* received better critical and financial reception than not one, not two, but *THREE* 2 hour studio mandated films featuring the actual Superman as one of the central characters.

Its not supposed to be real, so if you're going to make a super hero movie thats fake anyways, I'd rather have Snyder's dark filter over it than Marvels colorful, light touch.

I'd just point out that MoS isn't actually the first DCEU movie - Green Lantern is. Or okay, at least it was supposed to be (hence Amanda Waller) but was only abandoned as such after it fell flat on its face Remember too; GL was fun, with bright vivid colors and jokes all over the place ...and people hated it, with it losing I believe just short of 200 million. Soooo DC overreacted, naturally, running the complete opposite direction and back to the tone of the movie series people did like. That was Nolans. Hiring Snyder, a notoriously poor story teller with massive issues developing characters, just because he was best suited to imitate Dark Knight visually was the initial knife thru the heart of the DCEU from which they never recovered (seriously, hiring a guy that is horrific at characters to develop the character foundation of an entire epic franchise? What killed Man of Steel for me was the suggestion by Johnathan Kent to Clark to let those people in the bus drown. They compacted this failure with Clark letting Johnathan die in the Tornado when he easily could have saved him from it. Granted there are other points (i.e. why would a ship that crash-landed on earth thousands of years before Clark arrived have uniforms to choose from that Clark ultimately uses (unless we are supposed to believe that the A.I. known as Jor-El assembled the uniform when Clark used the key to interface at the ship). Hans Zimmer did an excellent job of scoring the film (a daunting task to be sure after the keynote score has been set by John Williams). Nothing against the cast, they acted what material they were given.

Avengers happened after 4 years and 4 movies (with it being the 5th in 4years). BvS happened after 3 years and 1 movie... Of course it was doomed to fail. I still enjoy the films but it's sad watching them try and catch up. The smart choice would have been to keep TDK trilogy cannon in the DCEU and have MOS be Superman's first appearance, it would then explain why Batman is so much older than we're used to in BvS and also Wonder Woman should have came out in 2014/15 to tide the fans over, rather than shoehorning her into BvS. Have Green Lantern actively reference Themyscira and Bruce Wayne, so we would know what's to come. It may not have improved the film but more people might go to see it knowing it's linked to the already existing and upcoming movies.

  • @benjaminsorensen9334

Overall, well done. The only parts you got wrong were: 1) Giving short shrift to original comics material. Nobody can read "For The Man Who Has Everything" and say with a straight face that Superman is always bright and cheerful and would never try to kill anybody. It's better to say that Man of Steel focused on less popularized aspects of Superman, and this was a mistake in terms of audience retention. 2) Failing to remember that Man of Steel was a split-base movie. You mention it once, then keep on saying it sucked. Some people loved it, some people hated it, so it's hard to say that it universally sucked. The real mistake was that they then tried to scramble after attracting the people who hated it, which didn't work and only alienated the people who loved it.

Great video! You’ve got a great tone and brilliant sense of timing. It’s pretty slick and professional. So this comment grew longer than I expected, but I needed to rant to please bare with me. Having grown up in the middle of comic/sci-fi/fantasy desert that was the 90s, I used to watch every film that came out of the 3 genres religiously no matter what anyone said about it (I understood then that critics and the media as a whole seemed to put their nose up at these films) and thanked Hollywood for each one. I actually enjoyed the unapologetic campiness of the earlier Batman films and even counted Val Kilmer was my fav Batman(Batman Forever was a personal favourite) George Clooney was a mistake and a half but Wesley Snipes as Blade was an inspired casting. I even remember loving Alec Baldwin’s The Shadow and Bruce Willis in the Fifth Element. One didn’t have a choice then to like or dislike a film if you like any of the 3 genres. You’re lucky to have 1 per year, and you take what you’re given. Nowadays we fans are lucky enough to have a luxury smorgasbord to choose from. Unfortunately for DC it launched amongst a plethora of high quality big budget comic/sci-fi/fantasy offerings and if this was the 90s I would have been the first in line on opening day for all of their recent films and gone away satisfied. But this ain’t the 90s, fans demand more than studios clobbering together a hodgepodge of ideas and slapping a bow around it for us to part with our hard earned cash. Marvel is slick, professional, respectful to the source material and they clearly have a passionate vision of a journey they want to take us on. DC wants you to admire the pretty picture and take your money. There’s only so many times that can work before we all wise up and refuse to stand there and be mugged. I was at the midnight screening of Watchmen and even though I found it pretty but cold and soulless, I wanted to give Snyder and DC another chance. So I rolled along for the opening weekend of Superman, which again left me cold. I actually came out happier with Bryan Singers Superman Returns which was a WTH moment. It can only get better right? When I hear Snyder was again directing yet another DC film I was sceptical but game to give it go. But BvS was the end of my long tether. Never have I come out of the Cinema angry as I did with this film. It was all style over substance with no real effort put in for coherent themes and meaningful story telling. Snyder should have stuck to making music videos. Having been spoiled for choice and quality in the last 18 years this is what they think we deserve? You’re right, the studio did forget to keep us entertained. In this day and age where the sheer scope of choice across all platforms is so vast we can never hope to see/hear everything even genre fans can and do switch off. In pursuit of an aesthetic style they think will make them money character development and good storytelling fell on the wayside. they forgot that we come to the cinema to feel, we want to laugh, cry, be angry, be sad, be anxious, be in awe and fall in love over and over. People came out of Force Awakens wanting a BB8, loving the diverse cast and remembering how unbearably cool Han Solo was. I came out of Inception realising Dreamshare tech is possibly closer to being reality than I was comfortable with and having fallen ridiculously for Tom Hardy’s roguish Eames. We all came out of watching Iron Man having followed Tony’s transformational journey wanting to give him a hug and/or wanting to be him or to be with him. DC needs to remember how to make films away from this idea of aesthetic and remember to make films where they respect the source material and love the characters. They need to invest in filmmakers whose ego and dedicated style don’t overshadow a good story. We want to love these ridiculous characters and feel invested in their struggles. That’s the only way it can work.

The reason Man of Steel didn't go over well is: 1. Superman is not supposed to be extremely dark. 2.Snyder isn't Nolan. Nolan is a genius at making storewise dark movies, Snyder specializes in visual effects, and just makes it look darker.

I'm big on diagnosis, finding the root problem for something's failure. And I've been thinking about the DCEU for over a year in regards to this. So with that in mind, I've come to the conclusion that the DCEU had two main problems. 1. WB failed to understand the value of its DC comics property. 2. They entrusted something so valuable to creatives (mainly Zack Snyder) who did not have the vision or capability to execute a compelling cinematic universe. That's it. Everything else is a symptom. And even with these two, if either one of them was absent the DCEU might have worked. Both were a death sentence.

I think There's one piece missing to your diagnosis, WB/DC got caught off guard by the success of the MCU and got to the shared universe party late. As such they didn't have a good game plan going in and so many of their decisions were based on a reaction to what Marvel was doing, rather than what they needed to do. This explains the problems with tone, derivation from the source material, production issues, a lot of it traces back to that.

Most what you say is true, but I think you are overlooking something: Man of Steel was never meant to be part of a Cinematic universe. Green Lantern was. There wasn't just Marvel collecting money left and right, there was also The Dark Knight. So Warner Bros tried to jump on both trains. The Green Lantern was a very transparent Ironman knock-off, complete with Amanda Waller having the role of Nick Fury. Man of Steel was basically Batman Begins for Superman. It was only when Green Lantern bombed spectacularly and The Avengers raked in all the money in the world that Warner Bros decided to shift Man of Steel to the DCEU.

In an ironic twist, Kevin Feige actually had to work hard to get the Marvel higher ups to not make the exact same mistakes as the DC higher ups. First and foremost was to not immediately make The Avengers first and to lay plenty of groundwork before going there. DC did Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman then Justice League. Even though i think the first Avengers movie is good, but no masterpiece, they still made the basic plot work, with each individual hero being outmatched by loki and his army, and only when they start working together as a unit, do they begin to gain some ground on him...

Marvel was always more darker in comics, in iron Man demon in a bottle, it tackled down problems with alcohol and addiction. While in DC, sure it took time for them to make there heros feel like we could relate to them, I mean I can relate to Batman for one reason and that reason is we all go through pain. But Spider-Man is more relatable because some of us don't fit in society and that makes us care less for everyone even the people we love the most like when Peter got his power, he only cares about himself and that careless mistake is what took the closest thing he had as father figure. So in real sense back then Marvel comics were more darker.

Definitely that way if they do decide redo Superman again they can do it right let's directors do the movie without your interference bring back Christopher Nolan and his partner who helped make the Dark Knight movie combine or take some inspiration from the first to Christopher Reeves movies or the entire trilogy and merge it with Batman Begins and most importantly keep Zack Snyder out of it

Not to mention the DCEU only relied on Frank Miller's run on 'Batman' as possibly its sole influence (I know Henry Cavill also based his portrayal of Superman on the graphic novel 'Superman: Red Son' but that's about it) that got stale very quickly, which is in contrast to Marvel who used a variety of comic books to influence the MCU output (as well as film styles such as the political thriller for 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and pulpp sci-fi for 'Guardians of the Galaxy').

Man of Steel was 2 changes away from being an amazing start to the DCEU. 1.Superman should not have had to killed Zodd. He would have been running on fumes fighting for that length of time. Phantom Zone 2. they decolorized the footage. If you have seen the color restored videos you will be amazed how beautiful it is. It looks like Superman.

Its also funny how people defend WW, while hating Snyder/BVS/MOS/etc, but they completely ignore the fact that Snyder is a BIG PART of the creation of WW. He is the one that even casted Gal Gadot, and pretty much fought for having her, and he is part of pretty much saving her actor career. Patty Jenkins praises Snyder, and he also influenced both Jenkins directing and the plot itself. If Snyder would have directed the movie, it looking the same, no changes, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER DISCUSSION xD The story in WW is, well very streamlined and dumbed down compared to MOS, BVS, hell even SS at times(though I prefer WW over it), but its ok. They should have kept that formula, have Snyder etc. do his series, while letting others do theirs at the same time.

Here's how I look at it: 1. Man of Steel: actually pretty underrated in my opinion and one of the better Superman movies. I'd say it's leagues above Superman Returns at least. Visually, it's stunning to look at. Henry Cavil is also a great casting choice for Superman. If you haven't seen this one in a while, I recommend you give it another try. 2. Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice: I think the Ultimate Cut makes this quite a solid and entertaining movie. The fight scenes with Batman were amazing and even though I'm not a big fan of the film's version of Lex Luthor, I liked pretty much everything else. 3. Suicide Sqaud: Legitimately bad and a massive disappointment to me. I'll give you guys that one. 4. Wonder Woman: the best in the DCEU series. Not much else to say about it. Pretty much as good as your typical Marvel movie. 5. Justice League: I mean, Zack Snyder's daughter did commit suicide halfway through shooting and they brought in Joss Wheddon to wrap up filming, which made a really inconsistent tone. I blame Wheddon honestly but I don't think this movie is that bad. But it is pretty mediocre all things considered. There were a lot of people saying the X-Men films were dead because of X-3 and Origins Wolverine. But then First Class came out and fixed the series. The Aquaman and Shazam trailers all look pretty good and we have no reason to believe the Wonder Woman sequel won't be as good if not better than the first one. If you think this series has failed, you're wrong. This is not from some fanboy. I don't really give a shit either way. I just want entertaining movies.

MCU fans kept on demanding X-Men rights being returned to Disney and that the franchise is getting worse but it's been 18 years and Fox still made very solid X-Men films this decade (First Class, DOFP, Deadpool, and Logan). Fast and Furious and Tranformers franchises still make movies even though they're universally considered bad movies. DCEU still has chances of getting things right. The whole "end the DCEU" thing is total bs.

Superman is bland, Lois Lane is forced, Pa Kent is as bad as a character as the actor, Ma Kent is just ok and the movie just ends, like what was the point of it? Was Superman trying to discover himself for decades and suddenly becoming a superhero? Because if it was, it felt really forced since he was just some guy that came from another planet and had superpowers, his real motivations are never really explored, he's just told that he'll do something great where he could have done many things as we see in the movie itself

Never mind the fact that they most often break the character's lore and mythology for the sake of "creative licenses". For example: When Superman is fighting Zod, Zod is temporarily weakened without his air mask because he is not "used" to Earth's atmosphere while Kal-El is and Superman strength comes from that fact rather than the sun's energy being absorbed by his body.... Excuse me, but WHAT?!?!?!?!? Or Lois knowing from the very get-go Clark's secret identity. Or Doomsday being created by Lex Luthor (terrible actor, age, personality and dialogue choices), Doomsday being a hybrid monster/clone from Superman, Batman using guns (like that sort of grenade launcher he uses against Superman and many many other examples. One or two changes here and there, meh. No problem. But ALL these combined, you got a problem because they basically detach from the main lore in the characters universes. I would say that (Deadshot being black, Jared Leto's HORRENDOUS Joker, etc). 95% of those changes turn out to be negative or counterproductive rather than positive and constructive. That is a BIG part of the problem of the DCCU.
