SO I bet you read the last description for my video and now am looking here for a easter egg, something below the line that you can tell your friends at work or school. But here's the thing. They won't believe you! You will read this and then as your sleeping (or lack of sleep because your so excited) I'll edit this out and they will think your nuts.
"Found and Explained didn't write you a personal note in the description, are you crazy?" but here's the rub, I will know, and I will know that you know I know, and that is ever so more sweeter. But hey, don't tell anyone else, this can be our little secret ;)
The rest is just for the algorithm to boost the video over all those other videos :)
USA, Europe and Russia have been dominating the world of aviation for decades, but in recent years, a new competitor has emerged.
meet the new power from the east!
The Chinese 5th gen jet has already entered operational service and it´s numbers are rapidly growing.
But is it any good or just a cheap copy of its counterparts?
Stick with me today to get answers to why the J-20 might be… not what you think.
The J-20 story begins with the J-XX program back in the 90s.
It was, at the time, a very ambitious program started by Chinese government to procure next gen fighter.
Why was it very ambitious you may ask?
Well, to put it simply, China was so far from actually successfully building this kind of aircraft
Namely because:
They didn’t have the know how
They didn´t have the engines
And definitely no experience with stealth technology
The only thing they had was vast experience with copying soviet aircraft during the cold war and that age old essential ingrenent - money. But the fall of their long term ally - the soviet union, would prove to be detrimental for their success.
The first step towards new fighter was acquiring almost all top tier Soviet tech from the new formed, desperate for cash, Russian and Ukrainian governments during the 90s and early 2000s.
The second was huge data leak of F-35 documentation orchestrated by Chinese hackers back in 2009.
To sum it up, the Chinese gathered the most they could and planned to build their new jet with experiences from both sides. A perfect blend of east and west.
After being chosen over Shenyang in 2008, Chengdu aircraft corporation unveiled their first prototype in 2011.
But the world welcomed it with a lot of skepticism.

well american youtubers still have their creativity and individuality intact. With a little bit of reading of the history of espionage it is not hard to see how the J20 came about. No different than the russian concord copy and the russian space shuttle both accomplished with stolen plans. Not to mention the boeing b29's that the soviets reverse engineered. The J20 looks like it was built by model kit bashing and a hot glue gun. But without the powerpland AND the avionics the j20 is just for parades. Oh and sure you could overwhelm a battle group by throwing 1000 of them at it but they won't be coming home.

The j20 and f22 look alike because they face the same aerodynamic constraints and stealth requirements, just as dolphins and fish have evolved to adapt to the same ocean environment. Moreover, each type of fighter jet is different because of its use requirements, mission mission, and design, so that what looks very similar is actually completely different. You can't go around copying parts of other aircraft and putting them together to make a working aircraft. It's systems engineering. It's not as simple as you think. I guess the youtubers are experts in aerodynamics and after careful study they will say that Chinese planes are stolen and copied junk.

The J-20s role was never to intercept F-22s and F-35s, they were designed to take-down AWACS and Oil Tankers/Refuelers hence, the long fuselage since it stores more missiles and fuel. Moreover, they were designed to fly longer since it's dedicated to fight in the Pacific Ocean where nearby landmasses are far away. Furthermore, a key design in the J-20 are its canards. The canards are for short take-off and landing since the Chinese government is expecting that at the early stages of a war in the Pacific, the US can send in hundreds of cruise missiles from nearby warships, bombers, and cargo aircrafts effectively saturating military targets and runways. Because of this, they designed the J-20 with canards to take-off and land with limited runway.

@@polls. taking down AWACS and aerial refuelers would cripple any fleet in the vastness of the Pacific ocean, the Chinese had solid plans for this thing but it didn’t seems like they had a technological edge over the American since the F-35 and a few other fighters can act as an AWACS too. But still, crippling the aerial refueling fleet and AWACS would put a lot of the technological edge of the West into the dumpster but the West are too aware of this and hence why we are stuck in a new arms race.

Canards don’t help with take-off but they can help with landing. For taking off you need thrust and wing loading. The main use of canards is to create stability in high speed, high AOA situations. It’s a band aid that address poor lifting body airflow and poor wing design.

  • @RR-us2kp

Canards does not guarantee that a fighter has short take off distance. Depends on what the canards are designed to do. Depends on the placement and the loading of the canards. In the saab gripen, canards help with short take off and landing distance. In the eurofighter canards are specifically designed for manoeuvrability and does not help in take off at all.

Coming from an engineering background you can see that people are quite fooled by the media thinking that J20 is a complete copy or just "made in China". Japan went through a copy phase and Germany tried to stop them for decades before WW1. They had to go through their own Research & Development stage. Supply chain differences, materials differences, design differences, software differences (from satellite to radar different technologies). Anyone with actual engineering knowledge and not just regurgitating some youtuber's US intelligence shill information would know that from them making the right molds to using the right materials and manufacturing capabilities to creating the process from beginning to end, surely know that the J20 is 99% inspired by others but designed by China.

You must be Chinese by blood I assume? Missing some relevant facts, I'm also not sure how Japan is relevant in this discussion but of course they live rent free in the CCP's (and han's) mind. To call the J-20 a design made by China is debatable considering they still rely on Russian engines for the craft. While yes there has been an attempt with the WS-15, its still widely impractical for any combat use considering the maintenance and reliability of a Made in China jet engine, which even the PLAAF recognizes. The J-20's EOTS is a direct copy of the F-35's and this can be explained with the 2007 leakings of F-35 technical documents Chinese hackers got their grimey little hands on. No one's really being fooled by considering the J-20 a copycat, because it is.

The aerodynamic design of J20 was really heavily based on the J9VI-II wind tunnel model back to the 1976 as a part of the J9 project (which was cancelled due to the lack of fund and no access to an equivalent engine), not mig 1.44. Even if the PLA was indeed bankrupt af back in those days, it still had access to one of the most capable wind tunnels in the world. The 611 institution which designed J10 and J20 basically figured out all of the currently-using VLO/LO designs and evaluated the corresponding performance and feasibility in the early 90s. But the PLAAF wasn't really determined to a 5(4)th gen aircarft by then for its lack of fund and motivation. It had more interest to a 4.5(3.5)th gen one based on the Flanker aerodynamic design so the Shenyang Aircarft Industry which produces the license-manufacturing Su27SK would easily produce the 4.5th gen fighter in a large quantity (which later became the J16 project). As for the whole 5th gen plan, it really started in the late 90s, when the 611 institution had already worked out the aerodynamic design but hadn't yet completed the avionics system and stealth technology. Its rivalry, the 601 institution which later designed the J16 also came up with the J14 "Snow Owl" design but failed the bid. As for the canard, I can find a thousand open-source papers about whether it will harm the RCS with different conclusions. If there's one thing I can really conclude with all these above, it's DO NOT CALCULATE THE RCS WITH YOUR NAKED EYES.

  • @franksun4017

    @franksun4017

Definitely no viable calculation of RCS with naked eyes. Cuz just by looking at F35 one would think that all those goose bumps would make it less stealth than F22, but in fact, due to the development of computer simulations of stealth characteristics of contoured surfaces over the decades more rounded surfaces could be incorporated into a fighter without compromising any stealth as seen on F117 vs B2 or B21. F35 is definitely not less stealthy than F22

Any surface can reflect radio waves. Any extra surface just increases the chances of this happening. A plane with canards will never be as stealthy as the same plane without it. The key is determining if the performance benefit outweighs the increase in RCS. Stealth coatings and CAD can reduce the chances of being detected, but the canards are not helping lower the RCS by any means. Add in modern AESA radar and the J20 will be tracked before it ever knows an F22 is in the air and that isn't even including the advances made in the AIM 260.

  • @franksun4017

    @franksun4017

@@stephenhood2948 You have to take into consideration that there is nothing important inside the canard wings. The entirety of the canard wings could be made out of composite that’s more transparent to certain radar frequencies, similar how putting a cover on a radar doesn’t make it blind. Canards are not extra surfaces, F22 has stabilizers too, it’s just that if the radar wave is coming from the front, it would be covered by the wings. If waves come from the side or the rear, it would still be present. The main reason why people have the concept of canard being not stealth, is because usually they are placed higher than the main wings creating reflection zones and that they most certainly creates right angles with the fuselages evidently seen on something like a J10 or Saab gripen. Neither of these traits are seen on J20, and canards on J20 are in fact made out of some type of unspecified composite.

I suspect that the effectiveness against the F-35 will depend on the variant. The Marine F-35B is the weakest and not designed for air to air engagements. The F-35C Naval Variant is designed as an interceptor and is a very effective dogfighter due to its larger wings. The F-35A or Joint Strike Fighter is somewhere in the middle and its also the export model our allies use. The Navy F-35C was designed as the younger brother to the F-22A. The J-20 won't be able to touch either one, but the Marine and Air Force variants might be in trouble.

The current firepower of the PLA makes a prospective invasion of Taiwan likely; couple this with Americans' inability to act during the invasion of Ukraine, there's nothing stopping China from annexing Taiwan. This is no longer feasible just by simple copycats. It greatly increased the difficulty of flight control design, so that the US always avoided using such a design. It is naïve to think that a country like China under CoCom and Wassenaar Arrangement multilateral export controls could produce a most advanced fighter by just copycat F-35's design documents. The same as it's impossible for United States to build International Space Station without the cooperation of Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada. It's WS-10C instead of baseline WS-10. Baseline WS-10 was used in J-10A, and never put into J-20 at any point. The early prototype J-20s used Russian AL-31 engines, which was underpowered and resulted in those early prototypes being unable to achieve supercruise. WS-10C produces greater thrust than F-22's F119, although less than F-35's F-135 (which unfortunately only use one engine instead of two, resulting in by far the lowest plane performance of the trio, it would've been a monster in a twin engine fighter). WS-10C is only temporary, slated to be replaced by WS-15, the engine originally intended for J-20 but fell behind schedule. As for life span, WS-10 family historically lasted longer flight hours than Russian engines, but shorter than western engines. One of the reasons WS-15 is so far behind schedule is due to the Chinese unwilling to develop along Russian titanium based line, instead opting for more difficult composite route similar to western engines. The added maintenance and replacement isn't worth the quick cheap development in the long run.

The relatively slender fuselage ratio of the J-20 shows its emphasis on high speed performance, but how to ensure maneuverability under high speed performance characteristics? It is necessary to carefully look at its aerodynamic design, it has 8-10 movable wings, flight control technology is extremely complex; And from nose to tail, it has a lot of lift structure. With a lift factor of >2, J-20 can guarantee a good supersonic cruise capability even without an engine like F119. It can achieve tactical maneuvers within transonic speeds that other existing fighter jets cannot achieve. The shape of F-22 aerodynamic design features, doomed to its supersonic mode, do not do fuel economy, although it has a top engine, but the endurance time, range will be greatly affected. In addition, the J-20 has a new age similar to the F35, full airframe distributed electro-optical detection system, information, larger and more advanced active phased array radar.

Reportedly PL15’s max range can be over 200km. Another key feature about J20 is that the twin WS-10C engines mounted, though not as powerful as F-22’s F-119 on ground, do have better high altitude and high speed performance. J-20 is predicted to have supercruise capability at mach 1.7 with top speed exceeding mach 2.5 since wind tunnel tests reported success over its airframe at speeds above mach 2.8. According to their official leaks, with newly developed WS-15 turbofan engines J-20 can reach an astounding top speed at nearly mach 3.0. Speed brings a huge difference in BVR air combats and J-20 definitely is a huge threat to F-35 with better avionics and super long range missiles.

The PL-15, which adopts radar active detection, has a large detection distance and has an anti-jamming data link. At the same time, it is equipped with a dual-pulse solid rocket motor to effectively expand its range. In view of the fact that the PL-15 bomb is 6 meters long, there are two versions of its range. One says that its range is 200 kilometers, and the other says that its range exceeds 300 kilometers, and it can even reach 400 kilometers. Regarding the range of PL-15, the two opinions are too different. Therefore, the range of the real PL-15 air-to-air missile is of course only known by our Air Force. The outside world’s statement can only be guesswork, and it is only for interested readers. For reference only. Even if the PL-15 has a range of 300-400 kilometers, even if it has a range of 200 kilometers, it should be the air-to-air missile with the largest range in the world. The U.S. Air Force believes that the PL-15 can have a range of up to 200 kilometers by adding a ramjet engine. It is already an AIM-120D medium and long-range air-to-air missile with a range of 150 kilometers far exceeding that of the US Air Force.

The WS-10C was introduced only a little over a year ago, and no data has been published about it. It's probably a significant vote of confidence that the WS-10C is trusted enough to be used in a single engine fighter but there's no info about its maintenance and operational statistics, only that it likely performs well enough to justify its use. It's complete speculation but the WS-15 is easily more than a year away from production as data from the WS-10C is collected and analyzed. AFAIK there is almost no verifiable data about the IRST. IRST on Western aircraft is capable of some pretty amazing things, it's unknown if the Chinese version can do the same.
