Until then, we’re here to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the best clothing out there, from the highest quality raw denim jeans to the warmest jacket to the sturdiest boots…the Iron Snail has got you covered. Kersey wool vs Melton Wool: if the same weight, both equally as warm. The difference is that Kersey is more densely woven than Melton. Having a tighter/more densely packed weave, it follows that Kersey offers far superior water and wind resistance. Just my own observation from having owned both. :) Thanks for the upload. Made my morning!

Yes, a sailor has to stand on watch for between 4 to 6 hours, usually 4 hours. Often outside or variously walking in and out of the ships bridge. Being able to close the coat in different ways is quite important as the wind will be ripping at the watch keeper from one direction for hours. It is horrendous if the coat lets that “slide in” and the watch keeper gets chilled. Also, working out on deck, one may be standing for long periods engaged in an activity with the wind whipping from one direction and that chill wind is cutting into the jacket! Great to be able to button the other way. Steering on a sailboat involved standing for hours with the wind coming from one direction. Climbing the rigging and putting sails away meant wind whipping from one direction until the job was done. So, the ability to change the coat’s buttoning up…..fantastic. I used to be a sailor so do know it from experience. Thanks for video by the way.

I have one of these that belonged to my grandfather who was in the navy in WW2. I have a few photos of him wearing it. the throat latch is an incredible feature, glad you highlighted it. I still wear the jacket occasionally but try not to wear it too often as it is a family heirloom. I also have some new old stock buttons and thread which is actually waxed with bees wax, try finding a manufacturer who does that today! Nice job on this video, definitely a hidden gem coat.

Funny and informative, there’s an amazing story about a seaman on the Great Lakes who was the sole survivor of a wreck because he had the good sense to don his pea coat prior to getting on the life raft. Because the ship broke up at night every one who was able to get off were wearing pyjamas, eventually they froze to death all except the sailor who wore his warm thick waterproof pea coat !

I enlisted in the Navy in 1986 was issued a Navy Pea Coat Black, but I can personally say when I was 15 yrs. Of age I inherited my Uncle's WW11 Navy Pea Coat it was by far the best coat I ever had it was Navy Blue stitched so tight it blocked all the weather elements, I wore it with pride got many compliments this was from 1982-1986 I don't know what I did with it to this day, the inside was inscribed with my Uncle's last name kept me comfortably warm, brings tears to my eyes I wish I still had it to this day. Great video. Just a small correction. Kersey wool was used right up to the 70's, as you will read in the fedrora lounge article in the Post WWII section. I have 3 peacoats, a WWII 1945 coat and 2 1966 Vietnam era peacoats, all 3 have the same Kersey wool material. They are incredible, by far my best winter coats and i got them for cheap.

Awesome video man! You've convinced me to get one. I went with the Schott Classic 32oz 740 in black. It would be cool to own a WWII piece worn by an actual Navy Mariner, however I've always been the kind of guy that prefers new garments. Also, Schott is a great jacket maker and they have a lot of American history. Their peacoat came highly recommended by many reviews and lists of the best peacoat for your money. It's not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive and I know it will be a high quality piece for me to enjoy for many years to come. BTW, I've been binge watching your videos for about a week now and you're my favorite fashion vlogger/reviewer/dude who makes clothing videos on KZread by far... keep it up!

The best pea-coat is from & Sons. I tried on ALL the pea-coats. They all had issues. They were too loose and let too much wind up the bottom. They were too restricted and you couldn't move your shoulders freely. The wool was too thin and not very warm. The collar was too small and didn't seal out the weather. There were too few buttons and didn't seal out the weather. Until I finally found $Sons. Other than the lame strap across the arm, it was perfect. High stand up collar, gorgeous melton wool, enough buttons to make the coat weather tight, proper fit through the body, but enough room in the shoulders for good movement. It is an amazing pea-coat. I had the arm strap removed immediately, and I am looking forward to handing this one down to future generations.

I think the interesting thing is that Pea coats are a more modern version of the original "Great coats" that were around since colonial times at least. So its interesting that not much changed from early wool great coat worn in the revolutionary war and war of 1812, they just essentially got shorter. a version of the Great coat was still around at the turn of the century and for WWI, but by WWII the style changed to shorter lengths, except in places were it was really cold, like the soviet Union.

Haha, informative, funny and well done video. Thanks you! I didnt know about the different way of buttoning it, i have to admit, but i am also unsure that the modern versions, like the Schott 740, allow it, - Do they? Ps. And yep, I have the Schott 740 one. I think it is 32 oz, so it's fairly thick and i have used it for, i guess, 5-6 winters in southern Scandinavia, (a pretty, rainy, cold and above all windy winter climate, close to the sea). I dont recall this jacket ever letting me down for warmth or for dryness. The Snow will kind of stick to the surface of it, so if you're in heavy snow, you'll need to brush yourself off, occassionaly, and for sure do it before you go inside. So the melton wool does the job, but as you say have a fairly rough, and less elegant expression than the older models, with the kersey wool. Some might prefer that kind of rougher, working mans look though i guess. Salutations from Denmark! Claus

Love my peacoat from the 40s. I had another one from the 60s, but the fit between two the coats of the same size are drastically different. The one from WWII fits what I'd consider fairly "athletic" whereas the one from the 60s started becoming more of the standard American sizes we know today. Less trim, more space in the body, and overall just less appealing (but only in comparison between these two coats - the one from the 60s was amazing before I found the WWII peacoat). I wish the stuff we were issued in the military these days were anywhere near as quality as the stuff from back in the day. I really only keep some of my old military stuff out of nostalgia rather than the stuff actually being of much use compared to the high quality civilian garments I own. Long winded comment, my bad. Good video! A lot of detail most people don't even think about.

Another thing to do if you live in a country like India where you can get cheap tailoring done is to take a heavy pure wool military blanket (800gsm) (we get tons of them here cheap) and have a tailor draft a pettern. It's so thick that, as you said, they don't use shoulder pads. I even ask them to forgo the interfacing in case it gets too stiff. Worked well. Having a panzer wrap made out of a 24 oz wool.

Pro Tip: Get a friend, relative in the Navy and go with him to the PX on a Navy base. Get fitted there. They have numerous sizes. They should have the perfect size for you. I think I paid under 200.OO USD for it. Obviously you will have to give the cash to your friend or relative to officially buy it! BTW, you look hung ova!!!

Mike! I have a very similar jacket myself, and am wondering would you recommend getting something this old tailored? Mine is a little too big as well (long sleeves, too-bold shoulders) and was wondering why you didnt choose to tailor it rather than gift it. Other than that, love your videos man! Was going to get the lining replaced too, and will definitely be stealing your idea about making it a cool pattern.

Definitely send me a pic of when you do that! And honestly i bet any tailor could do a good job (check reviews first) but that’s only for the sleeves, shoulders is a whole other animal and that’s why I’m gifting it! Usually if the shoulders are too big you can’t tailor it too much

The biggest issue with the peacoat is people not understanding they are a supposed to be layered over a suit. Or heavy wool sweater. Then they are supposed to be tailored, its like a suit. You can get a custom cheap suit made from china or a buy a off the rack 1k suit and the $30 suit will look insanely better. Not to mention its what maybe $40 in NYC to get an off the rack one tailored. So just invest in your Korean tailor and eat ribs together lol
