When I scored this racquet, a lot of it was in comparison to the Ultra 100v3, which may be my favourite racquet in this segment. PD has more power and spin, but less stability. PD is more muted feeling, while the Ultra feels more connected to the ball. Both will suit more beginner intermediate up to very advanced. I used both without issue against a former D1 player and an ITF female player.

For a beginner, I would go with the Pure Drive. The older Radical could be a bit unforgiving, especially towards the tip of the frame. The new one is more balanced feeling and powerful due to a thicker frame, but the Pure Drive will make tennis feel a lot easier, which should make it more fun as well.

You'll notice better power and stability from the 300g version. If you can easily make it through your hitting sessions with the Team (285g), moving to 300g should be feasible. In my experience, most 3.5 players are able to swing 300g. Just know the heavier racquet will require you to prepare your swing earlier. If you don't make this adjustment, you could start hitting late and putting stress on your wrist and elbow. I recommend the switch if you believe you are up to the task. More mass means better power, spin, stability and comfort!

Hi, I started playing again a couple of weeks ago but realized I had accidentally bought a pure aero lite (which was lighter and has a size 1 grip) and recently had severe tennis elbow pain. Although I was playing well, I’m realizing it must be causing this discomfort and want to switch to another racket. I’m mostly a baseline hitter, like to rally hard and am a female (mid 30’s, standing at 5’4” and about 53 kg). So was thinking of going for the 2021 pure drive with a size 2 handle. What do you think ? Does that sound about right and how does that compare to the pure drive vs? Which should I go for in your opinion ? The challenge is that comfort and power do no go well together. Higher frame stiffness leads to more power, but less comfort. Some people find more comfort in the EZone 100, compared to the Pure Drive, but I dont think it makes much of a practical difference. The Clash is best blend of comfort and power in my opinion. You could also try using a softer multifilament string in the Pure Drive. I like Triax a lot because you get great control and durability.

Hi CS great reviews on Pure Drive 2021. Currently playing with Wilson Clash 100 at 295gr but had to add Lead weight to become 310gr. I tried the Clash 100 Tour at 310gr but did not like it because of racquet head is way too light. I love the feel and control of my current racquet but somehow find it lacks of power. I played with the Pure Drive back in 2016 and found it very powerful but lack of control and tough on Elbow , but back then I did not play regularly either. I really love the Clash but I need to add more power and spin. I'm stringing with Lux Alu Power Spin at 48lbs. I am looking forward to buy the Pure Drive Tour 2021 with Lux Alu Power Spin at 50lbs. Or do you recommend to go for some softer string like Head Hawk Rough? What do you think?

  • @CourtsideSportsLTD

    @CourtsideSportsLTD

When it comes to finding a racquet with more power, you can either increase the stiffness or the weight. The Pure Drive Tour would do both. You also get a more open string pattern which may help with spin. I think the 2021 version is the most comfy Pure Drive yet, but it still may create arm problems for you. Has you technique improved since then? If yes, you are less likely to feel the harshness of a stiff racquet.

@@bryanharwell4448 Between the 3 you suggested, the Ezone 100 will be the easiest on strings. Its got great comfort for its class and I highly recommend it for an all around racquet. I really like the Wilson Ultra 100 as well. The reason why the Pure Aero is a string breaker is the open pattern. Not all 16x19 string patterns have even spacing. Open patterns means fewer string support the ball on contact, creating more wear. The reason companies too this is for spin. The further spaced apart the strings are, the most snap back that can occur. This snap back can also leader to earlier string breakage. As you son improves, he'll likely start to prefer less open patterns for control. The Wilson Ultra 100 and Ezone 100 are both racquet with more closed 16x19's. The Ezone 98 and Pure Drive are both worth trying as well, as so many people find success with them.

The Pure Drive is different racquet than it used to be. The string pattern is more open, you have better access to spin, but the launch angle is higher, so control is a bit lower. Comfort is much improved. There is a lot less vibration, but the muted feel is still there. If you have been using an old racquet, it probably players softer than a new one does, just from wear, so keep that in mind

This is a tough question. If you are able to demo them, I would do that for sure. I would say it comes down to whether or now you can swing the racquet over your playing session without getting tired. While your major muscle groups can likely handle the weight no problem, the concern is whether or not your smaller muscle groups, like the rotator cuff, the wrist muscles etc can handle it. If you have experience in other sports with similar throwing motions, I would feel good about recommending the Tour. If not, stay with the regular to prevent you from over stressing those small muscles.

If you don't have any issues with the weight of the EZone Tour, I'd go with that. The extra weight will give you long term benefits by reducing shock and developing reliable, natural power and stability. For string in the EZone Tour, I like something a bit more lively, like Solinco Tour Bite or Lynx Tour. In the Pure Drive I really like RPM Power

Pretty similar in feel, but it swings a bit faster, offers more power and less control. Both are very stable, muted feeling and more comfortable than the stiffness suggests. In terms of feel, all are pretty muted. The Clash offers the best ball-pocketing (holds the ball on the strings) then the Ezone, then the Pure Drive. If you like a snappier feel, the PD is better, as the ball shoots out of the stringbed faster. In terms of maneuverability, I'd say Clash > PD > EZone. Stability PD = EZone > Clash. Power PD > EZone > Clash. Control Clash > Ezone > PD. Spin PD = Ezone > Clash. If you have any arms issues at all, go Clash. Between the PD and the Ezone, it's pretty much just splitting hairs and you'd really have to try them side by side to find which is best for your game. I also an a BIG fan of the Ultra 100 as I think it is the most stable racquet in this class. Stands up to big D1 level hitting no problem.

I broke away from the pure drive 8 years ago or so, and now I might have fallen back in its trap after trying the 2021 version 😂. No other tweener I've tried has this affect on me. @@CourtsideSportsLTD I'd say for the average player who's advanced all the way to pro, that logic probably applies. Have you found switching from the APD to be good for your game? The Aero series definitely never worked for me at all. I used it for a while.... Because of Rafa 😂. As you said in video re up to 3 shots, this is where actually coming back to the pure drive seems to benefitting my play style. I have a big game but move poorly for my level, so it's important for me to keep up a certain shot quality and get on top of points quickly. Initially, moving to more controlled frames than the PD like the Yonex Duel G 97 worked a treat with this, helping me swing bigger and closer to the lines. A coach I spar with actually suggested I try the pure drive. Thought he was mad. But his reasons made me curious. Early days would suggest his theory was spot on though, as my playing style really seems to be benefitting from it in the 1-3 shots catagory, which is where I aim to win most of my points where possible. Plus the power potential of the PD is just intoxicating/fun. Which can cloud one's judgment, and think same applies sometimes with buttery, more controlled frames.

If you use back hand slice a lot, using precision more than power, I'd lean towards the Speed. If you like a faster swinging, more forgiving power racquet, go Pure Drive.

Yes they can break, but to what point are people breaking a new set of strings every 2-3 weeks, seems crazy to me. Maybe very easy for a pro, but surely not for the average player.

Trying to make a comeback since about 6 years ago a neurologist told me to stop playing tennis cuz he thought I may fall from cervical stenosis. Been back playing about 8 months using old frames like 2012 Volkl C10 Pro & C9 Pro & Volkl Quantum v1 mid. I'm 67 & still hit as hard as I did 15 years ago & hold my own with 4.0-4.5 guys in their 30's. Thinking of newer technology frame. I still take big swings & i was wondering if u think the 2021 PD would be a good fit for an old goat?

Absolutely. One guy in my town kept his game at a very high level to train his kids. I believe his daughter played college tennis. It got to a point where she was hitting it so hard that he had to switch from an RF97 to a Pure Drive and he hasn't looked back. You'll be shocked at what you can pull off with a Pure Drive. @@johnmalone1189 I really liked RPM Power in this frame because the soft feel and low power hide the Pure Drive's weaknesses. Tecnfibre Triax could be worth a lot if you want the feel and comfort of a multi, but the control of a poly, with strong durability. I recommend string 3-6 lbs tighter with this compared to the Volkl's to help you get a similar launch angle of the string bed.

The 2021 PD has more power and stability to sure. You'll also get a more muted feel with the PD, and in my opinion, that makes it a bit more comfortable. The VCORE 98 gives you a lot more feedback from the ball-impact, which can translate to some discomfort on certain shots. I'd say the main difference is the control. You definitely get more with the VC98 and that's probably what will make the difference when picking between the two.

  • @sjjapp

Vcore 98 is kind of like the pure aero and the pure drive having a baby, but that baby not filling out as much (shares traits but with thinner beam and head). Great racket, and definitely worth checking out if you like the two Babolat frames mentioned but can't control the power as well as you'd like. Slightly easier to control power level with vcore 98 and get a little more precision/control. I feel that both the Pure Aero and the Pure Drive, oddly, are better at the net than the vcore 98 though. Which is better from the baseline depends on your style. All three are great serving rackets. PD probably comes out on top because of that magic quality it has to boost your serve power in a way I haven't seen another standard length frame do. One of the defining traits for me with the vcore 98 is how fast it whips around. At first I literally completed a couple of swings before the ball arrived. Partially because tested at a lighter weight at first than I'm used to, but it also just swings fast for this catagory of racket.

@@jeremypages5062 For the lack of power just intense games, I think finding something with a highest swingweight would be very helpful, but that's going to be more tiring over time. For control, you'll want something with a slighty tighter string bed. For this, I prefer the Wilson Ultra 100 v3. The Pure Drive can be a bit launchy, whereas the Ultra retains more consistency in the stringbed. That said, getting used to a slightly heavier racquet will probably help if you are willing to commit to weight.

Long time AeroPro Drive and then Pure Aero user. Could never connect with previous Pure Drive versions; always found them too harsh. Gave the 2021 Pure Drive a shot when it first came out at the end of September and have been hooked ever since and switched. Despite the nearly identical swingweights, I find the PD comes around faster than the Pure Aero; not sure why but it does. This version is definitely more comfortable than previous versions and I find it to be more stable on volleys than the Pure Aero and backhand slices are better. I really liked the Pure Aero and at first thought I was losing some spin with the Pure Drive, but my hitting partner told me just the opposite, that my shots had more pace and bite and were definitely coming in hotter. The power of this racquet is definitely addicting, especially on serves, but flat hitters beware, you need spin to control it. I'm a 4.0 NTRP all-court player; my Pure Drive 2021 is strung with Hyper-G 17ga at 50LBS. Hope that helps..
