Why the 13th Century Was the Greatest Ever
Is it any wonder that we should call the generations that gave us the cathedrals, the universities, the great technical schools that were organized by the trades guilds, the great national literatures that lie at the basis of all our modern literature, the beginnings of sculpture and of art carried to such heights that artistic principles were revealed for all time... Is it at all surprising that we should claim for the period which, in addition to all this, saw the foundation of modern law and liberty, the right to be hailed as the greatest of human history?
Credits: This video features one of my favorite artists of the 19th and early 20th century, Albert Robida. The harpist is Sophia Kiprskaya performing Bach's Toccata and Fugue.

Not sure what I did to get this recommended on my page but I sure am glad I did!
Great video, fantastic narration !
I love studying European history and this video has great insights into how the 13th century laid the foundations for innovations that have benefited humanity over 7 centuries later. BUT. I think a more accurate title for this video would be "Why the 13th Century Was the Greatest Ever...for the Western World". If one were to zoom out to look at the accomplishments of various civilizations in Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia at this time period, I believe a case could be made for how other civilizations had accomplished marvels of engineering, arts, and government to equal the impact of western European accomplishments -- and some of them even occurred before the 13th century. Credit where credit is due, IMO. And no disrespect in any way to those 13th century Europeans. Their achievements definitely deserve this video acknowledgement and many others.

Thank you for your comment. Had time permitted, I would have included references to the scientific achievements of the Eastern world, particularly in the field of medicine and mathematics, both of which flourished at the same time. Without Arab medical texts, much of the work of early physicians would have been lost, and undoubtedly, those great European artisans used algebra to build their edifices. Nothing I said should be interpreted to diminish the achievements of non-Europeans; this kind of video is much like those that rank the greatest rock guitarists of all time. They are really made to stimulate discussion. I encourage you to poke around my collection. There are several videos that explore how outside forces shaped Western thought that I hope you find interesting.

@@sirtalkalotdoolittle Yes, I find it fascinating that the Arabs and the Muslim caliphate was able to preserve so much Hellenic texts and knowledge, translate it to Arabic, and then subsequently allowed to be translated into the various European languages as they came out of the dark ages. Wild! And thanks, I'll certainly explore the rest of your videos!
nice video!
Perfect voice for this video!

Thank you very much!
Very salient point made at 3:01.
Id add the Hohenstaufen Rule to the list pf Greatness of the 13th century, no matter how it went, no matter how it ended, they were just great. Thats it.
What is explained im the video actually started in 12th century and it is known as the "Renaissancen of the12th century". I consider that renaissance actually started in that century and only the black plague put a pause in thr process. Then the fall of constantinople brougtht new strength to the movement with more greek texts. But it was more of a continuation than a fresh start. It all started in the 12th century.
Obviously music wasn't a strong point in the 13h century, hence the use of 18th century music. But I don't think any knowledgeable person was doubting the contributions of that generation.
