It's the low tension rings they use which causes oil consumption therefore oil gets low and people blow them up., Best rule is to check the oil everytime you fill up your tank. Takes a minute but will save you thousands

What people forget is that subarus arent true sports cars. They are sedans with turbos and go into the "sports sedan" category and shouldn't be lumped together with sports cars(like Rugby and Football). True sports cars are built for sport car activities such as being able to handle being pushed to their limits often at high RPMs and a frame/suspension/cooling system that compliments that, (usually a 2door car, but very few 4doors can can be called true sports cars). But nearly all subarus are built for driving normally for the average driver and/or some light offroading(debatable these days).

Hit a deer with it and totalled it and got myself a 2017 WRX at the end of 2020 with 14k miles on it and I haven’t had any problems with it besides a leaking A/C condenser and leaking battery, everything else has been perfect on it for the last 2 1/2 years and can’t imagine anything going wrong with it anytime soon because I actually take care of it

Dunno man... I got an 02 JDM Forester XT. Bought at 98k km it now has 250k km. Winter drifting, offroading, pavement launches. It hits redline everyday, and I drive it hard... All I've had to do to it is brakes, oil, timing belt and a radiator that got a rock chip. I've worn out the axles a couple times... The engine is still beautiful, doesn't burn any oil and pulls hard. She's just got a little rust now, but everything still works. My second Subaru after a lemon 2.5 impreza... The key to longevity is to get a 2.0 and keep it stock... Stock power, stock clutch, and stock sized rims. Change the oil every 5000-8000 km. Shift properly and drive it lightly while it's still warming up.

So far I've owned a Ford, a Chevy, a Jeep, a Honda, a Subaru, a Dodge, and an Isuzu. The Ford was my first truck and is still in my driveway, drive it at least once a week, and the Subaru is my daily driver(128 miles a day taking myself and my wife to work). From what ive found is all brands have their ups and downs, something at some point is going to break, wear is inevitable, and when you put a lot of miles on vehicles like i do, learn to fix the problems yourself. The Ford and the Subaru have been, for me, the cheapest and easiest to maintain and do repairs on, and have had the least amount of issues, the Honda was up there with them, but i just didn't like it as much. All in all, if i had to make a choice from my experience, if you want something easy to maintain, buy a Subaru, if you dont give a shit about maintenance and just want it to work, buy a pre-'97 300 i6 ford, if you want to be stranded 2-3 times a month, buy a Chevy or Dodge anything, and finally if you want an engine that blows while its not even running and will never find a replacement part on this planet, buy an Isuzu

Do not mess with the engine management or boost pressure. 300hp is enough for a rowdy launch and a rapid 0-60. Tuning and poor driver habits are the downfall of most Subarus. They aren't meant to be fast on highway pulls, and they are fine in stock form... Mine is going on 250k km and I hit the redline everyday. I only just did the clutch.

10k on a new engine? It's not just the old oil it's the metal shavings and other break in stuff that killed the engine. That should have been changed at 2k miles and then 5k intervals after that

Ive had two subarus now and my first one was a POS but it was my first car. My second bugeye has needed maintenance as it's a 20 year old car. Just about all of them will. But it's sitting at a comfortable 300hp with some bolt on and a tune. And it's been a soldier. It doesn't complain about hot or cold. It doesn't have miss fires or weird turbo behavioral issues. My gf initially was very anti wrx when I first got the car but she's driven it to work when her cars were down and has grown to love the car and the platform by extension. If you're trying to make big power; yeah go somewhere else. If you don't enjoy the idea of properly maintaining a car, go somewhere else. But if you like making enough power to have fun with and enjoy the everything these cars are. They're some of the best in the world.

None of which are meant to last forever anyway every car needs repairs eventually even with proper care. Stock, maintain, best results! Mods, supporting mods, tune, maintain, great results.

The headgasket issue was fixed well before 2013. I am the original owner of a 2012 WRX. It's bone stock with 150k miles. It's relegated to hauling kids, but it's gotten expensive to maintain even just doing 8k miles a year. I wouldn't necessarily call it a reliable car. If it were, I would see more of them on the road. I use to see the 2009-2013s about 3-4 a Day. Now I'm lucky to see one every 2 weeks.

The problem is a lot of guys who have only owned beat up Toyota’s and Hondas with no issue get subarus that were used and abused and assume based on their previous Japanese car experiences that the car will still keep ticking for 300k miles or whatever. They don’t realize if you use and abuse a Subaru boxer engine you will destroy it. You also can’t just cheap out on maintenance with a Subaru like you can a Toyota or Honda and expect everything to go well smoothly. You need to go above and beyond what the manual tells you or else you will have a big hunk of metal sitting in your driveway

Honestly, I don't think Subaru sucks. This company makes great cars both in Japan and the US. At one point I had 4 Subaru's. Right now, I have 2; a 2018 STI which was designed for the 50th anniversary of Subaru. All the vehicles that were built to commemorate Subaru's anniversary came in one color: Heritage Blue Pearl! Additionally, on each side of the car there is the 50th anniversary emblem. My second vehicle is a 2024 Crosstrek Sport. I believe that I have 2 very reliable vehicles and they don't suck. Many people that complain and say that Subaru sucks, they don't know anything about the car.

I only recommend buying one if it’s completely stock or has muffler delete, coming from a 04 Impreza and now a 2018 sti, having a stock platform and reliable previous owner gives you better understanding of how the car was treated, I’d only go 400hp with 22 psi or less… with a recipe of support mods… anything more I recommend a built short block from IAG, open or closed deck

Feel like anytime in the car community the word Subaru is always associated with WRX/STIs and their turbo boxers. I feel like the FRS/BRZ/86 platform is big enough where we have to specify that it’s the WRXs that suck to own. The NA boxers are great and reliable as long if you keep it NA.

Absolutely 💯 that's because, although toyota didn't make the parts or engine, their philosophy went into the entire car. They knew it couldn't take thrashing reliably with a turbo, so they refused it. The drive train being rwd lightened the engine load as well, something subaru would never have done. The novelty of a low center of gravity boxer is all toyota needed from subaru. In my book, they are toyotas built with subaru parts

As a subaru owner, it really comes down to the engines being NOT overbuilt for the application, making them sensitive to abuse and prone to failures when adding power. There are also a lot of Forester and Legacy drivers who happen to like their vehicles for reasons like… excellent (for the money) build quality, design, reliability and livability. I don’t think you’re wrong about the WRX and other typically-modified models, but saying that Subarus (in general) are not good vehicles to own is misleading.

I can't tell u how many camshaft seals and belts I've installed and outside of routine brake and occasional driveshaft boots they are rock solid. I made my living for many years working on import cars if all makes and a Subaru is as good or better than any of them. If someone buys a clapped out poorly modded car that's not the cars fault it falls on owner neglect. If the problems are corrected they are a superior vehicle.

I unfortunately know a lot about owning a Subaru. I will never do it again is what I learned. 2017 forester xt stock. Absolute money pit. My 1995 cirrus is more reliable. My Subaru has gone in for every scheduled maintenance at the appropriate mileage which in itself isn’t cheap. Outside of that here is what I have had to repair. Transmission went out within the warranty. 2 brake calibers seized completely with regular brake changes. Control arms have been replaced 3 times now. Replaced all 4 wheel bearings twice now. Back latch and hydraulic arms. Misfire code. Forgot the cause but had it in for that to be fixed. Now driver window motor went out (1995 cirrus power windows still running strong). Short in fog light. There’s probably more. All work done by Subaru dealership. So either I got a lemon. Subaru sucks. Or their repair techs are garbage. Either one it is, I will not buy another one. My 1995 cirrus has had no major repairs besides and tie rod and routine oil changes, brakes, tires, plugs and wires.

Keep your oil fresh and full, let the car warm up, don’t modify without a tune and you can reasonably expect 100-120k miles before the turbo or some gaskets start to go.

(2001 Outback SUS NA EJ25 , '05 WRX EJ25, '16 WRX FA20). The '01 Outback did have head gasket issues, which was a common issues with the NA EJ25 on some early gen Outbacks and other models. I think a most of the failure has to do with the end user and how they maintain and treat the vehicle at the end of the day. Sure, there are going to be exceptions to this, but I've seen so many 'younger' drivers who just don't maintain their vehicles like they need to be doing. My next car will most likely be a Subie a well.. VB WRX will most likely be in my future in the coming years.

It’s not abuse it’s faulty design. Most people aren’t tuning Subaru’s. They drive them to drop their kids off at school and to drive to and from work. Go look at the proximity of the right cv axel joint boot to the headers on 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. Then go look at the OEM replacement cost of the Axel rod and boot. The CVT is trash as it isn’t capable of making it to 100k miles. Even the NHSTA required Subaru to issue a recall due to the number of complaints. In response Subaru extended the 60k warranty to 100k and replaced the transmissions as they came into shops. However they didn’t update the part. They just replaced the faulty transmission with an identical faulty transmission. That CVT is $10,000 just for the transmission. That’s why people hate Subarus.

No mechanical issues just some cosmetic stuff. Overall I still love Subarus, but I agree you better get one low in miles if you want it to last.
