Why Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is among the best fantasy

Ойын-сауық

This video examines the brilliance of Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen for its prose, complexity, themes, and world building even as it suggests that the vast scale of the series inhibits the arcs of the characters, who are small against such a grand backdrop.

Hello, everyone! Just a little note here to mention that my thinking about Malazan has evolved in a couple respects since I made this video, and this is because I've now read the prequels to The Malazan Book of the Fallen in preparation for my reread of the series (and, yes, I'm including Esslemont's Novels of the Malazan Empire this time). In fact, my reread has begun, and I have some new Malazan related videos. Most exciting is the fact that I'll be joined in the reread by A.P. Canavan, advance reader for Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont. A.P. and I will have a discussion of each of the ten books in The Malazan Book of the Fallen over the next ten months. I'd be delighted to have you join us!

dj suth Well said! It is the most complex series in fantasy that I know of. Not just in terms of being long and having a huge cast of characters, but also in how it challenges and engages a reader, giving the reader much more than easy entertainment. Thanks for the comment!

I've read the series many, many times. The series being titled The BOOK of the fallen is just spot on. First read through of gardens, I wasn't so much confused as I was feeling I just didn't have all of the information, but what I did have I knew I liked, so I continued. Deadhouse gates fully introduces you to Erickson. Not the story, but how he writes. It's just a slow build up of what you think are inconsequential things, that converge into an amazing finale with the chain of dogs, which is where I became dumbfounded and hooked. Erickson writes the entire series like it is just one big book: a series of what you think are random or inconsequential or disconnected events, that slowly converge into an amazing finale. By the time I got to the crippled god, no matter if it was the first or ninth time, I had to take breaks because I would start crying at certain events. The only form of media to make me cry, and I love erickson and the series for it.

In the meantime, I loved Forge of Darkness, which has helped me to better understand and appreciate Erikson's unique genius. Thanks so much for watching and commenting -- much appreciated!

After 3 books of the series, I would say that although Steven Erikson TRULY does amazing scenes and action, it is in the quiet moments within the characters themselves where I see mastery of the artform. I see others who do this, but it sometimes rings empty. With Malazan so far, I can say that you get out of it what you are willing to give it. So don't rush. Put it down and let moments simmer properly. Enjoy the journey of it.

I don't know that I'll ever read another fantasy series quite like Malazan, it got under my skin like nothing I've ever read. Erikson did such a remarkable job with the thematic content and the philosophies he tackled, i was constantly stopping to read entire pages over again, some really brilliant writing. Strangely though, i actually found the story to be quite a character driven one. That said, it can be a very frustrating reading experience at times, in some ways i often think some of Malazans greatest strengths are also it's greatest weaknesses. He's currently working on a Karsa Trilogy, i believe the first book is all done and just waiting for the publication process to get underway. Interesting tid-bit, Erikson actually meant for MOI to come before Deadhouse Gates, he wrote 400 pages of MOI and lost all the work he'd done on it, got frustated and wrote DG instead, i think it worked out for the best honestly.

Jeff Smith I’m a big fan of both series, but my take is that WoT is the more “conventional” of the two in that it’s more representative of fantasy and its tropes. Malazan is simply unusual, perhaps unique, in its refusal to conform to some of the conventions, like having a central protagonist or at least a group of main characters. Perhaps Erikson’s unique genius is why more readers don’t pick up Malazan, and also why many give up. But those who persist and recognize the brilliance usually end up devoted fans. My take. In all honesty, it took me a while to adjust to Erikson’s style, partly because he defies certain conventions, like having a central protagonist or set of characters whom the story is built around. Malazan is theme driven instead, with the central theme perhaps being compassion (and often enough the lack thereof). Once I wrapped my head around the fact that Erikson wasn’t giving me a hero but instead was presenting me with a rich cast of very “human” characters, I really started to appreciate his genius. This is just one of the best series I've ever read. Reading the final book a few weeks back, it wasn't at all what I expected to happen, but I was satisfied with the ending. The more I thought about it, the more satisfied I became. Erikson added things in that final book that I'd not thought about for 2, maybe 3 books, but those things had such a pivotal role in the ending. It all just makes sense and kind of clicks together. Never have I read such mind blowing, epic, grand storytelling or scenes. The battles in Memories of Ice, the convergence in Toll the Hounds, Lightfall, Korabas, and so many others in The Crippled God. I could go on and on about this series forever. Oh also, I believe Tavore to be one of the best fantasy characters ever written. Great video!

i am so envious of you english speakers! as a german reader i will have to wait probably 2-3 more years until i can finally finish the series. there will be 20 books in german because the bastards split everyone in two to make more money, and the next one, number 17, will be released in september .... -.- i could read it in english of course, but eriksons english is of such high quality that i would probably miss a lot of things because my english is not perfect on that level. german by the way is perfectly suited for an eloquent writer like him. it is by far the best series i have ever read!

It is quite true that anyone who can read Erikson is fortunate! As you say, his prose is excellent. On the other hand, this summer I will begin reading Bernhard Hennen's Die Elfen, and because my German is not so good, I'll resort to reading it in an English translation. So, my friend, in this case you might be the fortunate one (though I don't know how you feel about Die Elfen). Thanks for your comment, and best wishes with finishing the Malazan series!

It's an amazing series, definitely worth rereading. Would also recommend the Esslemont books, they are great companion novels. He focuses a lot more on individual characters and specific events within the same narrative. His first book was a bit rough, especially when comparing it to Erikson, but he has grown a hell of a lot - and if you like the setting it's just all gravy 😀 Also the Kharkanas novels - those are on hold for now, but I seriously hope the trilogy will be completed soon. Delving into the history of Dark, Light and the Tiste, yes please! Just pick up everything Erikson has written. The Bauchelain and Korbal Broach short stories are great fun, as are his Star Trek spoofs Wilful Child. And his serious sci-fi novel Rejoice was probably the best book I've read last year.

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Thank you for the thoughtful reply! I always enjoy stumbling upon a new channel revolving around literature, and I'm glad I stumbled upon yours. Always refreshing to get new opinions on media for which people have a mutual adoration for. I also purchased Forge of Darkness during my mass purchase of used Steve Erikson books at my local store, along with all the Malazan he had haha. As for the Witcher, I very much enjoyed reading the entire series. I'm not sure what popular opinion is regarding the layout of the series, as it begins in a sort of short story collection, though I found it charming, as if they were bard tales told in a tavern, short and sweet in their telling. As the books progess, the story streamlines into a more traditional novel to novel layout, which works nicely as well. The storyline itself isn't what I would consider a typical fantasy in the slightest, thematically speaking; while there are heroic undertones and beautifully scripted battle sequences of amazing swordplay and sorcery, the story continually slows into periods of lengthy philosophical contemplation regarding Geralt's (the protagonist) place in the world and his responsibility to those he loves. The narrative also dips its toes into themes, characters, and general story progression of the Arthurian Legends, which Sapkowski is able to poetically weave into the telling of the tale with (imo) great style. I would say Sapkowski is most definitely a kindred soul with the stories I've come to consider fairy tales. A regular fae author :) Hope I didn't bore ya too much with my essay. Look forward to watching more of your channel!

The two series work well together. Erikson's books are the huge time spanning overall arc of this time in their land. Many key events in the book are closed over, because they are handled by the other series. Think of it this way. Erikson's books are months of time. The other novels are one key night. So they read totally different but complement each other perfectly. I highly recommend reading the other set of books to fill in those gaps.

Lots of people have complained about the character work because they don't get to experience all of the nitty-gritty inner thoughts and feelings of the characters (for the most part). They want to latch onto a character (or characters) and experience the events in the books through them. To them I simply compare the characters in Malazan to reading about your co-workers or schoolmates. You learn their personalities, you learn what makes them tick, you learn tidbits about their past through conversations and references throughout the series. But, just like your co-workers and schoolmates, you're never let completely in... And that's on purpose, and that's ok, because Malazan is a book about world events and history. The characters are just along for the ride.

kinda, he is not as good a writer as erikson is(no one is) but he has as good a handle on the world as erikson. the empire novels of his does a great job at expanding the main series both in finishing up the empire arc and expanding the conflict with the crippled god even more. on the plus side he makes squads that are as great as eriksons and he is perhaps even better at large battles and when characters jump betwen the series you can instantly recognize them - they very much agree on personalities etc(from their RPG sessions i'd guess), on the negative he does not attempt anything near the same 'ambition'(for lack of a better word) as erikson does. it is much more 'traditional fantasy'. if i rate erikson as 10/10(i do) then Ian is about an 8.

I’m going to do my own reread of Malazan pretty soon, after I read the various prequels. You may have heard, but Erikson has a sequel trilogy in the works featuring none other than Karsa Orlong. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Petrik Leo Thanks! I just finished Forge of Darkness and Fall of Light, and I’ll be reading The Path to Ascendancy soon to prepare for a reread of Malazan, including Esslemont’s books this time. My esteem for Erikson’s writing is increasing with every book!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I actually haven't read Esslemont's books except for Night of Knives! I have decided that next time on my reread of Malazan Book of the Fallen (maybe next year?), I'm going to read everything in this world, including ICE's books. Back then, I think was too in a hurry to get to the next Erikson's books that I found myself so impatient with reading ICE's books.

I'm loving my journey through this amazing world and these wonderful characters so far (on Memories of Ice right now) even though I'm not sure what's going on a lot of the time. I know in some circles its considered Grimdark but I disagree with that assessment. Would it be fair to call Dark fantasy?

I just had a great conversation with Mike from Mike's Book Reviews on this exact topic while we reviewed Deadhouse Gates. The video just came out today on his channel. To answer your questions here, I don't think I would categorize Malazan as anything other than fantasy since it has a tendency to defy labels. But I give a longer answer in the discussion with Mike (it's towards the end). I hope you continue to enjoy the series!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy thanks for the clarification. I thoroughly enjoyed your discussion with Mike. I'm not participating in his read along (I'm doing it at my own pace and may take extended breaks) but it's great to see the read along is going strong and the Malazan community is so welcoming.

I've read and re-read so many times. The richness and depth of the books is astonishing at times. The characters are some of the most memorable. The Esslemont books are equally good IMHO. Memories of Ice is still of of my all times favourite Fantasy novels.

Russ Haywood I’m really looking forward to my first reread of Malazan, and I’ll be including the Esslemont books this time. I’ve been reading Erikson’s other Malazan related books books in preparation, and I have a feeling my respect and admiration for Malazan will deepen as a result.

Russ Haywood I actually loved Forge of Darkness (I did a review of it), but the first few hundred pages were not fast reading. I’m glad I pushed through, but it’s definitely even more “philosophical” than Malazan. One thing it did for me was help me to understand Erikson’s writing a bit better. Not a casual read, that’s for sure.

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy No that went to the charity shop. I hope you enjoy the Esslemont books, I know I did. Admittedly he' not quite the stellar writer that Erikson is, but the novels stand up well on their own. 'Blood and Bone' probably my favourite, which if memory serves is set on the continent of Assail.

Russ Haywood Cool - I’m planning to read Esslemont’s pre-Malazan books as well, the ones featuring Kellanved and Dancer. I’ve heard he’s not as amazing as Erikson, but that’s a ridiculously high bar. I’m looking forward to finding out!

I think the best way to approach this series is to not get invested in the characters, but their overall theme and arch. It's not black and white but grey all over, and while there may be evil and good characters, it's not that apparent, especially once you've taken in their back story. The themes are what you need to understand to fully appreciate this series.

What's your favorite book in the series? I think midnight tides is my favorite (toll the hounds I'm currently reading is challenging that) and feel if Eriksson had a couple more books as tight narratively and character wise the Fallen series would be more mainstream.

misomiso Thanks! Yes, it’s a huge commitment to read this series. Erikson’s approach to magic is interesting. I think it’s more on the side of “soft magic”, meaning there’s no extended attempt to explain how it works or make a seemingly rational system of it. My sense is that Erikson would prefer to preserve the mystery and sense of wonder that way. A video on it is an excellent idea! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I made it through book three before I gave up on the series. It took me three separate attempts to get through the first half of book 1. By time I broke through the first half of book 1 I really enjoyed the second half of the book and was excited for book 2. Then book 2 it was back to not fun. I had no idea what was going on for the entire book. Same story with the third book. As I was about to put a hold on book 4 at my local library I realized I was reading the books because of inertia and not because I was actually enjoying them. So I stopped there and haven't looked back since.

No question that it’s not for everyone, and it sounds like you gave it a fair chance.
