Why Some Black Women Are Turning to Witchcraft

Once a haven for the entire community, the Black church is losing some of its younger members to witchcraft.
Over the last 5-10 years, more Black millennials and Gen Z’ers are breaking away from Christianity as a religion and seeking Black ancestral spiritual practices. While the practice of magic and the term “witch” is often associated with whiteness, Black women have been reclaiming the space and traditions that originated in West Africa, Cuba, and Jamaica and migrated through the transatlantic slave trade. A 2021 Pew Study found that while most Black people still identify as Christian or Protestant, 15% of Black Americans surveyed say they pray at a home altar or shrine more than once a week, while 8% burn candles, incense or sage for spiritual or religious reasons as often, and 8% also say they consult a diviner or reader several times a week.
This new “trend” has been catapulted by social media where Black women are creating safe spaces to practice divination through astrology, tarot card readings, creating altars, and other rituals without fear of isolation or persecution.

I understand many people have been exposed to toxic Christian practices/churches. When I hear a blanket statement like the poster made re Jesus being toxic, I know that they are speaking from a limited knowledge of, and bad experiences with Christian teachings. I used to take offense but I realize that their experience has defined the entire faith for them. It has nothing to do with the beautiful relationship I’m having with Christ. 💜

You left the church and your family has left you, but Jesus has not left you, he loves you and wants to give your life meaning and purpose! You’ve been disillusioned because people around you are not walking the walk and loving like Jesus so you left because you thought to yourself, ‘if this is what Christianity is supposed to be, I don’t want to be a part of it.’ People get turned off by religion, but Jesus, the real Jesus can satisfy the deepest parts of our soul and only he can love us in our mess. Religion is about man trying to reach God and perfect ourselves and clean up our own mess, the gospel is God reaching down to us in our brokenness and entering into our mess through Jesus to rescue us and make us alive again! Praying for God to intervene in your life and show you the love and inner peace your heart is searching for!

I can say I’m more spiritual. Basically what I’m getting to is, I feel like Christianity takes us away from our true self. If I were this regular person not in tune with my body, I probably wouldn’t have even seen any signs that she was showing me. Other things happened like driving home from work I took the same route, in the same exact spot I saw a shooting start two nights in a row. Also at work I cared for this specific lady all the time but one day I came in and there was a sign on her door saying no pacemakers or pregnant women and that actually made me go test.

I agree that we need to connect with our ancestors and the spiritual practice but remember that Abrahamic religion didn't come from the white man. It began with us and they adopted it equally Jesus wasn't white or a Christian he was a jew and not the Jewish people you see today. Many of my ancestors prior to their enslavement in the carribean were Muslims. We need to understand what we are messing with. I believe that we descendants of slaves and African with afro hair are Hebrew and have a connection with Yahweh that is ingrained. I also believe that as the lady said we constantly cast spells with words I.e the term"spelling" when learning words. I think its also learning the power of the world and resources around us. I just found out that mold is an antibiotic I.e pencillin. That's where it comes from. There is a dark side though and we should be aware. White people have taken our religion and beliefs and demonized them for knowledge, power and control. Don't let them confuse us further by continuing the false idea that the Abrhamic religions weren't known to us prior to them. We already had the knowledge and practice its just been stolen and repurposed for their own benefits

For now at least, since my early 20's, I realized that the two people that were actually ruling the world in evil, (albeit never formally acknowledged) is/were the Black Female & White Male. Is this not one of the main reasons why (especially American) Black Females, in general, tend to be reluctant to ever submit to or even righteously acknowledge and show any true respect to Black Men as an equal or greater to themselves? All other nations of people have set cultural standards that their females respect and tend to obey; however, as with Black (American) People, they/we generally speaking no longer have a real culture; thus, we tend to try to live some other nation's culture and lifestyle. Consequently, is it not true that one may say that the majority of Black (American) Women steadfastfully choose to instead be: abhorrent, arrogant, 'bad eggs', contemptible, corrupt, criminal minded, crooked, crooked natured, degenerate, egotistical, egregious, fiendish, hateful, good for nothing', greatly unfair, ignorant, insane, mischief makers, perverted, scallywags, soddish, and really unfeeling? Then, can it not be said that the majority of Black (American) Women are socially evil? What's your definition of evil?

I began even to hear strange voices before and, during the times I slept. Eventually I had to call out to God for help. COLONIZERS changed it so that people like you wouldn’t find the truth because your so DETERMINISTIC. Its not the white mans religion. The blacks are the true “JEWS”. The word said we would be sold into slavery for our disobedience and PAGAN(IDOL) worship. Yet yall think its still ok. Its fine. Hell fire and eternal damnation is a real thing. What kind of depth and meaning would said persons experience have in the long run?!? One of the individuals in the beginning of the video left me like 👀👀👀 after she said "your magic is your soul, you need to share it to the world!" What?!?!? Girl stop it! The fact that people of color have been demonized and treated poorly (in the past) and to this day still is......... just for having dark skin and possessing whatever specifics that they were created with. Should reveal the importance of what's given to you, is meant for ***you. Your personal journey is but a written journal that only you can read/that you're privy to. As no wandering eyes should have access to a life that they're not living. Who in their right mind would need to show off who they are, what they've learned and experienced........ just so "the world" can see?!? There's more than enough folk performing, they can remain front and center stage to shine in ways that they desire to. A spiritual journey that is housed within doesn't need anyone else to cosign on it. There's more than enough oppressive individuals of all colors, sects and religion doing and ignorantly saying the worst, daily. I too feel the same. I was forced into the Catholic Church. I was forced to believe in deities such as God, Jesus, and Mary, that I didn't know anything about besides being told that they "saved" me. Speaking as an 18 year old Mexican-American: I am pulling away from this religion little by little. I do not feel a big connection to any of the 3 deities I mentioned. I do not feel close. I do however feel that someday I'll come back, since I do feel some pull to Mary specifically, but for now I do not like feeling this way. I've been praying to my ancestors and the universe as a whole nowadays. I've been attracted to herbs and stuff like palo santo, incense, etc. I was born into this type of stuff since I am Mexican. I see it everywhere. I like it. Only the positive stuff though. Never the black stuff. I hope I can find some peace within myself someday. I hope God forgives me.

the Catholic church claims to be biblically correct but they are not they follow man made false traditions and are not led by the SPIRIT of the LIVING GOD therefore most people brought into catholicsm leave and lump Christianity in with it when they write it off catholicsm actually follows witchcraft practices like praying to Saints & deceased loved ones. we cannot solely rely on human beings to show us the way to GOD,we have to seek HIM for a personal relationship if you read the Bible you will see how different it is to what they taught you in church ask GOD to open your eyes & ears to the Truth & give you wisdom & understanding you as you read, mary is not a deity, JESUS is GOD incarnate, HE came to set us free from death & sin, heal our brokenness, & reconcile us to the FATHER, to be in HIS Presence, learn to hear HIS Voice, & walk in HIS Will, the HOLY SPIRIT is HIM living in us, being with us all the time comforting & instructing us, you dont have to hope for peace any longer because JESUS came and bore the suffering for us to have peace & joy, read the Bible for yourself the church you were forced into led you away from the unadulterated WORD of GOD, i hope you decide to seek it for yourself & ask GOD to guide and teach you through HIS HOLY SPIRIT, repent & HE will forgive you we all like sheep have gone astray but HE will heal your sin, hurt, & confusion HIS is faithful and merciful to do so all throughout the Bible HE promises to be there for us when we seek HIM with all our heart & to answer us when we call when i was 13 i stopped going to the catholic church bought a bible, read, repented & prayed and GOD revealed the truth to me and now i have a personal relationship with HIM and am set free i cant even put into words all HE has done for me & how grateful and humbled i am to know HIM GOD bless you♥️♥️

There is no real connection to Mary. Mary is not to be worshipped and she has NEVER answered anyone's prayers NEITHER has the power nor was ever given the power to do so. The Bible the Word of God is clear about who to pray to and gives direct teaching on salvation "be it KNOWN unto YOU ALL, and to all the people of Israel, that by the NAME of JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth, whom you (Jews) crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by Him does this man stand here before you whole. This is the Stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the Head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in ANY OTHER: for there is NONE OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN given AMONG MEN, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:10‭-‬12 " And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you." John 16:23 " Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." John 15:16 " And whatsoever ye shall ask in My Name, that will I do (not Mary)👀, that the Father may be glorified in the Son." John 14:13 " Jesus answered them, I told you, and you believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me." John 10:25 " At that day you shall ask in My Name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:" John 16:26

fun fact. alot of catholic practices are actually rituals and spells by definition. taking of the sacrement is a ritual. getting baptised is a ritual. when you pray your calling on a power beyond your own. this is magic. magic is intent. thats the only ingredient you REALLY need. is intent and willpower. i passively do magic every single day. im able to see into peoples past and have actually freaked people out because they wouldnt leave me alone. funny story is i had this religious guy keep coming to my house sneding me bibles and stuff so one day i stopped him and i asked him how his grandmother was doing cause i sensed he was dealing with a death and he went pale white and i never heard from him again. i had nothing to do with his grandmothers death but i knew it had happened thats what scared him was how i knew. I dont curse people unless they do something truly wrong and even then its usually just nightmares for a few weeks. maybe some bad luck. alot of witches arent willing to do any kind of negative magic because they belive it will come back to them and that spreading negativity only causes negativity to come back on you which i can agree with but ultimately my magic is designed to keep me safe and to hurt those who cause me harm.

I’m a Christian, not only because I go to church but because I have a personal relationship with Jesus, this video just took me right to prayer! It’s really sad for the people that were on a church and never get to know God, I’m not saying it’s their fault. My experience with the Lord was different, I met God because of the miserable life I had, I was so attached to witchcraft, I had a very sinful life. I met God in the middle of my room, laying down in the floor, 6 months pregnant, high on weed and crack, I was just thinking how did I end up here??!, what was going to happen with my baby. And in my desperation I cried to the Lord, I just told Him to help me, if he was real, to help me that I was going to loose my baby my family, that if he was real to take this drug addiction away, to take the urge of it and make me feel disgusted for it. He did! Exactly as I ask him, that was Dec 15, 2015. He clean me, I had my beautiful healthy baby girl, and months after she was born is when the problems started, I was having a spiritual attack, but once again I went back to God, he deliver me, sent me to a church. But guess what?! I left church because I didn’t like it, it was to much for me. But after almost 3 years I went back to that same church, We been in church for 3 years, my baby girl is 6 now, she drives me crazy, she never stops talking 😅 she loves church, she loves Jesus she loves everyone at church. It makes me sad to see all this comments, about people that stop following Jesus because of people. If people knew how the devil works! People now in days are looking for entertainment in churches, they don’t want to listen to the real gospel, they don’t want to repent from their sins. People have a hard time staying in church because they need deliverance. But may the Lord have mercy of all the Pastors and ministers.

@@bnapblacknewsandalternativ1489 God bless you. Well first you have to understand that the word of God the Bible says that we don’t have battle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual principalities, our battles are spiritual. You would have to understand that first, so when a person has a spirit of hate (racism) that person has an unclean spirit (demon), that person needs to be deliver. That’s why Jesus said to love our enemies, pray for our persecutors. But just like the Bible says you need to be born of the spirit, to see the kingdom of God. If you are not born of the spirit you can’t see the spiritual stuff. For example if a man is racist, and he teaches that same behavior to he’s son, he would learn and that generational curse would continue, that spiritual bondage would continue. That’s why there’s so much racism, because that’s how the devil works.

For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. FOR AMONG THEM ARE THOSE WHO MAKE THEIR WAY INTO HOUSEHOLDS AND CAPTURE WEAK WOMEN, BURDENED WITH SINS AND SWAYED BY VARIOUS IMPULSES, WHO WILL LISTEN TO ANYBODY AND CAN NEVER ARRIVE AT THE KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH. God tells us over and over and over again, many times in the Bible specifically to stay away from witchcraft and all of the occult. That is reason enough to stay away from it. Witchcraft encourages people to take their faith away from God and put it in other people (themselves/or other witches), spells, crystals and many other things that have no power. Only God has the knowledge and power to heal, give guidance and save. THE GOSPEL (THE GOOD NEWS) OF JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. Jesus Christ came down here from heaven, God on earth, to be born one of us His own creation and He dwelt among us for over three decades and He taught us about God and His eternal heavenly kingdom and how to live righteously and He lived a perfect sinless life. Then He gave His sinless life to all people from all nations to pay for our sins for us, by dying on the cross and resurrecting from the dead three days later, to pay for our sins for us to reconcile us sinners with God to give us eternal life with Him and after He resurrected from the dead, He lived on earth for forty more days, speaking to many people, then He ascended back up into heaven and He is coming back again at the end of this world to set up His eternal heavenly kingdom and all people will see Him and have our sins judged by Him. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior TODAY. He died and resurrected from the dead to pay for our sins for us, so that our sins will not condemn us at the final judgment, to reconcile us sinners with God to give us eternal life with Him.

@@wonderful4life You are mistaken, Christianity and Catholicism are NOT the same thing, Christian means follower of Christ, pure and simple, a person who has accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Catholicism is a fake religion, a cult that dangerously mixes Christianity with the pagan worship of dead people, Mary, and Saints created by the Catholic cult and popes, which is an abomination to God, and they use fake religious rituals and ceremonies like repetitious prayer with pagan rosary beads, and the fake Catholic religion does not believe that Jesus paid for our sins once and for all when He died and resurrected to save us from sin, death and Satan, but He did. You are confusing two very different things which is just what the Fake Catholic religion wants you to do. Also, again you are confusing the lie of the Catholic church about Holy Communion, the Catholic church, since it does not believe that Jesus Christ paid for our sins once and for all when He died and resurrected from the dead to pay for our sins for us, teaches the lie that the bread and wine are the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, because they believe He has to die over and over again to atone for our sins which is a lie, actually, the BREAD AND THE WINE are SYMBOLIC OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, which means that they are SYMBOLS that REPRESENT the precious body of Christ given for us and the precious blood of Christ that was shed for us to save us from sin and eternal death. Jesus Christ Himself told us at His last dinner on earth before He died and resurrected and ascended back up into heaven to remember Him in this way until He returns at His second coming to set up His eternal heavenly kingdom. A true Christian, not a nominal Christian, which most people who say they are Christians are, is one who has admitted and repented of their sins and believes the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Bible and has received the Holy Spirit from God, been spiritually born again, by honestly accepting Jesus Christ, God on earth, as our Lord and Savior by believing that He was born one of us His own creation to die and resurrect from the dead to pay for our sins for us so that our sins will not condemn us at the final judgment, to reconcile us sinners with God to give us eternal life with Him.

The reason people are turning away from the church is because of statements like this. “at the heart of witchcraft” do you have a coven ? Have you ever spent time in that community ? NO ! So what gives you the right to make this statement about someone else’s faith ? It’s like someone who doesn’t follow the teachings of the church saying that “at the heart of christian belief is the need to control a population by subservience and contrition” That’s not fair to say especially by someone who’s outside of the church. So I question your statement & your motivations, & why you feel the need to speak on things you have no knowledge about. And if you’ll respond, & if it’ll be enlightening or if it’ll be a bible chapter or verse condemning these women to death…. When the questions being asked are, how and why these women feel they need to seek knowledge spiritual enlightenment & community ? your reaction to that should be,What can my church do to make these women feel heard and loved & that although not all prayers are answered, The community as a whole can support them in their darkest moments…. But no, it’s easier to go on the attack and make false statements than it is to show love & compassion for people who view the world differently from you.

Before you critize or rebuttle ask yourself or do the research of why both stories are very similar but the afrakan one came thousands of years before...we cant say jesus came first because this came thousands of years before so therefore its safe to say that jesus was a copy of something my ancestors from afraka created and somebody else copied it if you think differently prove me wrong
