Why soldiers in Ukraine’s International Legion answered the call | DW News

A group of people answered a call for help from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy - to join the fight against Russia's invasion.
The International Legion includes soldiers from many countries who have fought and died alongside Ukrainians.
DW’s Mathias Bölinger visited some of the International Legion fighters who had just come back from the front.

“Good versus evil” narrative has been used throughout history to manipulate young men into fighting and getting un alived to serve the interests of the political class. Men on both sides of this conflict have been brainwashed by this good versus evil narrative. Men who are fighting for Russia are fighting for Russian economic and security interests. Men on the Ukrainian side are fighting for U.S. economic interests. As simple as that. Stop drinking the koolaid of good versus evil. Approximately 19k civilians KIA since 2014 in this war. Now compare that to the 25k+ civilians KIA since October last year in the ME. Very little criticism from the US establishment about that atrocity. In fact, they are providing more and more weapons to the culprits. The double standards and hypocrisy is astounding.

There is a female Swedish member of parliament with a military background who went to Ukraine and trains soldiers. Of course, a lot of people from all over have come to be medics or just to make camouflage nets. You don't have to be in combat to contribute to the Ukrainian victory. As for me, I send money every month and I write to my senators and representatives and sometimes to leaders in the military. We can all do that, at least. It takes 3 minutes to send an email or to make a phone call, and each time a constituent contacts them, it adds up and gives them more bargaining power in discussions about support for Ukraine.

They *do* have some glaring and exploitable weaknesses that drones are best suited for utilising, however. @@johanmetreus1268 In the cold geopolitical logic the end of the war is not what weakens Russia the most. Them suffering constant casualties and having to deploy their army in Ukraine means the rest of their neighbors face no threat for the duration of it. Seeking peace is for other reasons, usually humanitarian, rather than strategic. Only if the Ukrainians are seen to be losing and potentially capitulating entirely it would be in everyones interest to see an end to the war. So far this hasn't been the case and only pro-russian or other rather mistaken people are seen to advocate Ukraine terminating the conflict at any cost in peace terms.

@@herptek The geopolitical logic is right on point, but I think you are missing the nuance when it come to those wanting the war to end fast. There is of course the pro-Russian posture of "saving Ukraine" by in effect unconditional surrender to Kremlin, but for the neighbouring countries things are quite different. The on-going war is a constant drain of resources, and also upsets the markets everywhere. Peace and quiet is a good thing. Thus, from our perspective, the best possible outcome would be Ukraine crushing all the Russian forces inside their country so hard and fast that Kremlin falls and a new government less enthusiastic about expansion takes over.

  • @herptek

@@johanmetreus1268 It is rather optimistic to think that Russian government will fall or to change for the better as a result of this, no matter how the war goes. If Russia itself crumbles before the stress imposed by the economic sanctions or other consequences of the war then that is a different thing. It might take a while and people should get used to hard times. Economies can re-orient once it will be clear that there is no going back to how things used to be.
