i noticed in basic training the young kids who could run, couldnt cope with rucking a large or heavy pack, the slightly out of shape guys struggled to get good times running ... but no problem rucking. Also the gym bunnies, had strength ... but no stamina, and they suffered when not getting the calories.

My absolute best time was 12:32. I was maybe 20. We had spent the whole night drinking. I was running with my SGT, whom had been out with us. We were hung over. Now, I am short. 5'6". At the time, I was all chest, NOT a runner. But, my SGT and I were goofing off, and playing catch up to everyone in front of us. I think we finished 4th in the company, lol. I immediately puked afterwards. Went back to our barracks, showered, ate-then probably did a ruck march, lol. #Gruntlife

I agree and disagree with what you are saying. Injuries become a major concern for commanders and when you add rucks into the mix people start getting hurt. Ultimately, self discipline is the only thing that matters. Taking the kiddes out on a five mile formation run and you go quite three miles into it. You see how people start to act when they are hurting. I am a huge proponent of Kettlebells for conditioning and fasting to build self discipline. I believe that “next war is come as you are,” if you are not ready then some dude will treat you like Ned Beatty in Deliverance. Then again I live on crayons and my knuckles drag. Our unit’s slogan was “Suffer silently, Suffer patiently.” The better shape that you are in the less you suffer.

Yeah, when I was 19, i was indestructible also. 1-2 miles is not endurance, 20-100 miles with a load is. The thing you said, without saying, and I've experienced and learned, is that consistency it the key endurance performance, not specificity. Daily low intensity workouts, has a far greater effectiveness than random targeted workouts. Example; 30min walk or light jog every day will build more fitness than one 10miler on a Saturday. But at the same time you acknowledge that gearing up and doing the actual hike with gear is essential. Running alone is not enough, i agree, but as a substitute (not everyone has endless amounts of free time or opportunities) running/jogging can be a good supplement. IMO.

In general this current culture seems to stipulate this unhealthy obsession with being the very best at something, when all you have to do is do something consistently, get enjoyment out of it and gradually improve at it.

If you got 40 to 50 lb of gear on you and you're patrolling, legs are getting stronger you're going to do good on a PT test. I do remember in the 70s having a CSM, we do our morning run and he was a stickler for running in combat boots because nobody runs in tennis shoes in combat. Then they came up with the idea of running in full LBE gear. Vivid memories

Had a Drill Sergeant tell me I was a pack mule, not a race horse. Best I ever did was a 13:23 in basic and I puked my guts out. Per my understanding a PT test was not required in theater and for promotion purposes they could go back 18 months for a score. Was told to do a PT test in theater and quite at the 1 mile mark because I had had a severe ankle injury about 2 months prior. I got chewed out by a E7 whose own troops happened to go on sick call that morning. When I called her out on the bs was one of several Article 15s I've been threatened with throughout my career. ✌️🇺🇸

Yeah 17min 3 mile was considered great at my unit, cant imagine going slower than that and visualizing myself as a warrior. Harder is better and exceptional should be unit standard. I love units that read the historical text and aspire to those norms, think Roman or even Mohican warriors covering great expenses to deliver defeat after defeat upon their enemies. God bless the American Republic 🙏 may it have a great revival and prosper many millions more citizens.

I tend to agree about running in shorts and tennis shoes. In my day we ran in fatigue pants, boots and issue T-shirt on crushed charcoal rinning tracks. My best was 14:26 for the 2 miles. Everyone was covered in soot, even out tounges were black. This was Fort Dix in August 1980. I do think that the Airborne Shuffle in boots over a dirt track will benefit as boots are heavy - especially 8” duty boots back then with those funky tire tread soles. I personally found that the Airborne Shuffle while singing cadence helped my breathing tremendously!

When I was in the best shape of my life (in the army). The apft was a joke. Getting a max was easy. Where you get the real training is during rucking, carrying ammo cans for distance, flipping tires, burpees, pushing that up-armored humvee while carrying sand bags, and actual training (my deployment experience doesn't really count, it was a vacation compared to garrison life). Now that I'm out, I go on hikes with a pack, lift weights and for extra cardio it's the stairmaster and sprints. Running is cool, but let's be real it isn't the best overall indicator of fitness.

As an aspiring professional athlete, I intuitively had this belief very young: If I play my sport all day, I will get in shape to play my sport, and there's no need to do anything else. Not only did we play our sport all day, but we played other sports as well. There was no need to do other kinds of training, but of course our coach wanted us to run lines, do jumping jacks and other kinds of garbage which was honestly counterproductive because then we were tired for the actual sport and couldn't perform as well.

1977. Kabul, Afghanistan. The day after my 31st birthday, I have to walk the Khyber Pass to Parkistan. It is the only way of leaving. No push ups, no sit ups, no running for years. No problem. I am as fit as the migrants I see in the camel caravans, but not as fit as the people who walk over the mountains instead of through the pass so that they avoid people. If you own a dog and take it for a walk twice a day, you are probably good to go. If you construct your own gym outdoors at home (southern CA) and skip the traffic jam on the way to the paid membership gym and fighting to get on a machine, you are doing well. You can do 15 minutes of the daily workout, then do something in the house. Come back out and do the next exercise. Your video on prepping for every day stuff - comment. 09/11/2001. I have to go to a meeting. My car was already prepped so that if I were stranded away from home, I could go to ground in place for a week, and never have to return home. I timed it and gave myself 15 minutes to figure out anything else I wanted to take to the meeting. 2024. Every day prep. Same. Whenever I leave home, other than on a walk, I have a pad of paper, a pen, and a book. You are going to be on someone else's schedule - whether you have to sit in a waiting room, wait for a store to open, wait for the promised car repairs to finish. Don't use your cell phone. This is the time that you have alone time to do planning that you write out. This is the time to focus on reading so that you improve your skills. You make lists of what you need to do and the priorities. What the Grunt knows is that proper planing leads to performance. Otherwise, you never have the time away from the phone, from people intruding on your time and space.
