Why Singapore Is Heating Up 2x Faster Than The Planet

Singapore is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world - with maximum daily temperatures predicted to reach 35-37 degrees Celsius by year 2100. As the world gears up to slash global emissions after the alarming report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October 2018, we explore how, beyond climate change, the urban heat island effect spells trouble for future Singapore.

See there’s a huge paradox here: build high rises, which take up less space and are generally better for land use, less invasive for green areas. Urban sprawl destroys wild areas and is terrible land use. But then high rises can destroy underground aquifers and generate a lot of heat and overpopulation. Real head scratcher right there.

Revisiting this in 2023 where temperatures reached record levels in Singapore and realised that within the past 4 years nothing substantial was put into place to tackle this. We are just building and building without any recourse. Or the strategies in place have yet to prove effective in any way. Personally, I think proper urban planning is very important. Where I stay, we used to have strong breeze coming into our unit or estate but since the opposite land had been built up, there's barely any breeze.

Deforestation to make way for giant enterprise to feed the ever growing population? That's another one. And that's just two among the myriads of problem human is facing today. Oh, I forgot, majority of the greedy filthy rich people doesn't even care. So I guess we'll just have to wait until mum earth will one day decide to ditch us all at once. Maybe she waiting that huge asteroid to wipe us all sacrificing earth itself as well lmao. The biggest culprits for the climate change dont come from homes, but from commercial buildings, hotels and shopping malls, If you ever work in those places you will know why. Dont even know how many billions of electricity they wasted on unneeded lights and super cold air con areas that you can keep a polar bear happy in. Anyway, the lesson learned from this video is that if you live at the hight level, dont install a air con, as your electricity bills will be higher then the rest. I wonder when your ah gongs can start thinking right and allow solar panels to be installed individual houses to cut down on power station electricity use.

These aircons actually don't do much to actually affect climate change since all they really do is swap out heat in a small area. It literally is the "Heat Island" effect XD. Singapore just took the stereotype to the next level! Jokes aside, its just too many buildings clustered together in a warm tropical island. The level of heat produced and accumulated is astounding! The use of cooling systems just increases ambient heat further! The glass on the building doesn't help - ask the Japanese about it, they are changing it to low reflective glass!

I live in a inland town in Sarawak, about the same latitude as Singapore. It was December last year(2019) i visited Singapore, the heat is my first impression about Singapore. Despite frequent rain, sometimes a few huge downpour a day that floods the pathways, the streets will heat up within an hour or two like there was no rain at all. The one week stay there was really nice but the heat is rather disturbing.

I have lived in the middle of the Thar desert in Rajasthan,India for over two years. Summer tempertaures used to reach 48 to 50 degrees in the open. To survive in such extreme temperatures you must follow the native folk, wear large turbans, buildings are made of local sandstone and they conserve every bit of water. Singapore gets pampered by its prosperity. I recall a much laid back Singapore with its attap roofed houses, cool kampongs, before high rise buildings came with heavily paved roads and pollution from overuse of fossil fuel. Singapore cannot go back to that village life. But it can stop reckless urban development now itself. Global warming is a reality for Singapore. The heated up sea is rising and will reclaim its shores soon.

minor correction ac condensers do not suck in air or heat. they all try to eject as much heat as possible, however, the external air is assumed to be a heat sink and of course the higher the temperatures the more inefficiently the refrigeration cycle is. there are some benefits that might gain by going to a central air conditioning for the building

In Germany where I am born, houses are insulated to not waste heat energy. They have double pane thermo-insulating windows, and thick insulation materials inside the walls. In Singapore we need to keep the heat out, but it is the same. We need to keep the heat out to safe energy and pollution. But the windows are made with thin glass single pane, even for expensive condos, the walls thin. That is where it all starts. Then the greens. You may say Singapore is so green. Yes, it i. But about 15 - 10 years ago I saw massive pruning everywhere. At least in my area that has contributed a lot to heat up the concrete of houses and roads. The climate has become remarkable hotter, in particular at night. While in daytime the temperatures may be similar, yet the nights in Malaysia just 100 km to the north are remarkably cooler, nicer. Or at least they feel cooler.

I lived in SG between 1993 and 2004 then left for somewhere far. I visited a couple years back. I can tell you it is hot as hell. The breeze was warm like in an oven. Monsoon season was more predictable and I can sleep at night w/o aircon or fan. Same thing in Malaysia.

The biggest reason behind the Urban Heat Island Effect is the heat trapped in buildings, roofs, and paved surfaces. And the best thing we can do to reduce; 1) Preserve and increase the vegetated area, such as forest cover, street trees, and rooftop gardens 2) Make surfaces, such as roofs, paved areas, etc. more solar reflective (High SRI/SR values).

It's so puzzling that in Hong Kong and Singapore people are infinitely obsessed with air conditioning. Due to the amount of humidity and the amount of heat, it is actually feasible and quite effective to use a fan instead. By evaporating the humidity which condenses on someone's body, that actually produces a cooling effect which is already sufficient for someone's needs in a small room

I would argue that humidity is why aircon is much more effective, air conditioners can reduce the humidity in the room alongside the temperature. If you’re using a fan in high humidity and heat, the fan just blows hot and humid air at you which doesn’t do much to evaporate your sweat

The bigger problem for the minuscule country is rising ocean levels, at a rate that rises faster every year. The loss of land mass is a problem for all nations with coastlines but a far larger problem for small island nations.
