Well you know, the word "behemoth" is originally from hebrew. It's the plural firm of "behema" which means animal, beast, wild/ and or rude or cruel animal (especially when used as an insult against a person), or cow

This is a rather funny phrase due to the fact that Bulgakov was a doctor. Instead of Vodka, alcohol mixed with glucose was usually used. In general, a lot in the book is connected with his biography.

“It’s too late. Annushka has already spilled the oil” - line from the book that became a widely used phrase in Russian culture. Means that some wheels of “destiny “/ actions are already set in motion and the logical results are imminent.

In fact, we almost do not use it. Without the first sentence we can say it, but very rarely. We usually use the phrase "Late to drink Borjomi" (Borjomi is a brand of mineral water that, as they say, helps alcoholics not to suffer from alcoholic illnesses)

Woland: Hold my beer...

Many people miss the fact that Bulgakov wrote this novel while being at his death door- he was blind, partually paralized and completely burnt out man and because of this the novel feels like a fever dream. Of course in his state he wasn't able to hold the pen so his wife had to write shorthand for him. She also preserved the novel and published as it was Bulgakov lash wish. Master and Margarita reflects his relationship with his wife and among other things his tribute to her.

This is incorrect. He died of a kidney disorder. He had finished the novel prior to falling into bad health, writing a long letter, with his own hand, telling his wife as much.

Another brilliant novel by Bulgakov which i highly recommend is “Heart of a Dog”. Russian classic .

One of mine favorite quotes!

I remember reading this book in one of the most dark period of my life and i was immediately and magically immersed in the story, it let me think and dream for days and it became my all time favorite book now. When you realise that the story of the Master in the book is metaphorically the story of Bulgakov himself, you will feel and understand how genius and tormented he was... But like he said "Manuscripts don't burn"

This is almost exactly my story too. I was incredibly depressed when I randomly decided to read this, and it made me so full of passion to realise that something this pure and genius can be created by a man. I remember feeling lonely even though I lived in an apartment full of people, and I went to the park to read this alone every day. So now it is one of my favourite books and I read it once a year

"The citizens of Moscow react with petty self-interest, illustrating how Soviet society bred greed and cynicism" Well, let's be fair and not omit the fact that Woland, watching this unfold, noted that people are still the same, implying that he had seen such things earlier and perhaps elsewhere. From Woland's point of view, there was no criticism towards the Soviet society, he stated the persisting illnesses of humanity in general.

It's kind of late to respond, but i think by saying that people didn't change Woland meant that communism isn't like people thouth it will be, that people still were obsessed with money, and there still was disproportion between poor and rich.

That's my favourite chapter. The rain, water pouring through the palace gardens, Pilate gazing at the storm before him - to this day I feel like I've been there myself, that's the magic of Bulgakov's writing.

I got this book in 1973 (brilliant translation by Michael Glenny) and I have read it at least once a year ever since. Each time I get something new from it. My original copy is falling apart and I have just bought a new one. It is the best book ever.

I just read it... I'm not sure : Are Master and Margarita in love or not? She have a conection with Woland and he poisoned her soul. Also master had Woland as side author of his novel. Someone who surround himself with diabolical fources can't love anyone. What do you think?

@@DenezisAleska She is deeply in love with him, she agrees to do a favor for satan and asks nothing in return even though all she can think of is to save her lover. They definitely can't stay in this world but they certainly can still love each other.

@@carrots_arelife2924 Margarita is a bit put off by strength of liquor offered to her. And Behemoth makes a twist on the whole "purer means better" mindset, claiming that the only liquor worth the Queen of Underworld (which is a role offered to Margarita in Voland's demonic ball) is pure alcohol.

Ive read all the others and about to read We soon. But so far Brave New World was my favorite. Very deep; I’ve realized the problem with it and basically would never trade freedom with pleasure, but at the same time it was tempting to live in that world. So the ending with John made sense to me, yet upset me as well.

This is such unique novel among others Russian novels. Highly recommend to familiarize with the Gospel before reading this book and to check some historical facts about Russia of the early 20th century to understand the novel deeper!

I'd recommend reading Bulgakov's Morphium. You know, there aren't that many books about opiate addiction, especially russian books. And believe me, he knew what he was writing about.)

Yeah he was addicted its his own experience. Being a native russian speaker I read this book when I was a teen, and I think it saved me from trying drugs and becoming addict myself.

Immediately upon watching this I read Master and Margarita for the first time. It took only a few days- I couldn’t put it down. Transformative novel.

Great love and female revenge and tons of humour and Satan's philosophy and Jesus' dialogues and life after death and social critics and and and and i am not smart enough for this novel. I believe there is no other book similar to this.

@@andros9657 at one point Satan tells: "u ll get what u believe in" (turning the scull into dust on the ball). I was around 15 when the book was covered by literature course in school. But this stayed in my mind somehow. And I started to choose things that I like from different religions that I want to believe in. I like the idea of angels-guardians, the idea of reincarnation, the idea of karma, the idea of soul and idea of God as an eternal love... I am born in Muslim family, not a strict one, we drink wine and don't pray 7 times a day and don't fast😄but still my relatives have a clear understanding of what's right and what's wrong. Thanks to this book and others am free if rigid thinking and I know that there are different ways to live, to think and love.

Elysian it is pretty scary as is. But just so you know this phrase has much more meaning when you are a bit more familiar with russian literature in general. Nikolay Gogol burned the second volume of "Dead souls". Till this day this decision of his is often being brought up even in day-to-day dialogues. Gogol wrote a lot about demons, ghosts and mysticism of all sorts.

It's also really moving, considering Bulgakov himself burned his own manuscript of the Master and Margarita. Years later he started re-writing it. His wife was like "but you've burned it once, how do you know what to write"? And he knew it all by heart!

I just wrote a 10 page paper on this book for my final assignment in my 20th century Russian literature class. It’s become one of my favorite novels ever.

This novel was my favorite assigned lecture in high school. I want to read it again in the original version (instead of Polish translation) but my Russian isn't good enough yet. For now, I'm practicing by reading the Russian comments. :)

I read it 3 times and in different ages. Every time it was like first time, you will laugh and cry in different places depending of your age. My favorite book so far.

Yeah!!!! I managed to play a crucial role while doing the stage adaptation with my theatre group!!! Makes it extra proud for me !!!

This book is my favorite book to reread. I always come back to it as often as I can. I never enjoyed being asked 'what's your favorite book?' because I could never narrow it down to just one, but I had a professor ask us once 'what book would you tell someone to read if they'd want to see their everyday life in a different light?' The Master and Margarita is my pick.

I can't deny but to agree the fact. The Master and Margarita simply a masterpiece.

I got completely baffled by the line: "No, that simply cannot be. Anushka has already bought the sunflower oil, and has not only bought it, but has already spilled it. So the meeting wont take place." I don't know if I wrote it correctly, but it has stayed like that on my mind for a very long time. What a mind blowing book.

One of my favorites. Sarcastic, mystical, just great.

Just an absolute masterpiece. I am currently reading it... Just- absolutely amazing. I am too inspired by this book that I myself decided to be an author of magical realism. 😭 Thank you for suggesting this book, Ted Ed!

I got this book for my birthday. It was the first book I had in English, given to me by my host dad in the US in 2008. I tried to read it once, but found the writing to be too complicated to keep my attention for too long. After watching this video, I HAVE to give it another chance. And my English has improved at least ten-fold, so it will probably be a little easier to chew. Great video and art, thanks again you guys for doing such an amazing job so consistently.

Bulgakov is very easy to read. You should just choose a proper translation.

It's an absolutely lovely book, that should be a good read for most people given it's mix of humor, seriousness and fantasy as well as a unforgettable cast of characters.

My favourite chapter is 15, called “Nikanor Ivanovich’s dream”. It’s so damn surreal

yes, this book definitely deserves such a nice and eloquent ted ed explaination/peak, so more people will learn about it and hopefully read it. it took me 8 hours to finish when I was in high school, it's impossible to stop until you finish the whole novel. thanks ted ed

This is one of the better reviews of this novel I've found online. Belvoir Theatre in Sydney, Australia, has this year adapted this amazing novel to stage. The adaption blends the plot of the novel with the story of Bulgakov's struggle to write it and, more amazingly, the wonderful efforts of his wife and then widow to protect the manuscript, smuggle it out of Russia and have it published. What a gift she provded to her late husband and to the world! The Belvoir production is a tour de force but has many areas where key parts of the novel are omitted. still, theatre deserves great credit for a brave, thrilling and very entertaining adaptation.

I just finished reading the novel and immediately came here to watch the video. What a brilliant job on the illustration! And the narration is wonderful too. It does justice to the novel in the most concise way. I can’t wait to introduce this as an introduction to the book to some of my students.

Definitely one of my favorite books. You should cover “Three comrades”, or anything else by Remarque next imo

I just completed this book and good heavens! What a mighty book. Surreal, a true masterpiece. This would remain a touchstone for many years to come.

I love this book. I read it when i was 13 and it was one of my life-changing books. Definitly worth of reading.

Love this book! I read it at school, a lot of Russian high school students study it as a part of literature course. There is quite a number of quotes from M&M which have become well-known aphorisms among Russian speakers. I also recommend reading "A Young Doctor's Notebook", another great piece of writing by Bulgakov :)

This is just the best of an under 5 minute bait to a brilliant novel. Never could even realize how and if a foreigner could make it (no insults intended, of course). Bravo, just bravo!

Before I read any of the world's literary classics, I make sure to look at the interesting explanation of the book on Ted Ed and I am never disappointed with what I have seen and heard. Your videos always help me better understand the circumstances in which the work was written and always make me interested in reading it! Thank you!

I want to finish this book but I keep rereading chapters because I enjoy them so much.

i love these videos so much. ill probably never read this, considering how most high-minded classics are just too difficult for me and i dont seem to have the patience, but im happy i can at least understand a tiny bit about why its a classic. thank you ted ed.

Oh please don’t….the book is wonderful on multiple levels. I read it first in my early 20’s… and it transported me across time and space whilst sitting on my sofa. The classics need not be experienced on a deep level… they can engage, enrage and delight us …regardless if we “get” it all …skimming is perfectly acceptable imho 😊

These videos always give me recommendations on great books that I may otherwise overlook.

I became curious about this book after hearing director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby, Elvis), has acquired the rights to make a movie about it. I can see why he's interested on it, I hope he manages to make the movie.

We had to read this in class, this was by far my favorite work ever read.

Ted-ed always has great animation

My favorite Dense and easy. Profound and fast. Bulgakov doesn't get enough recognition.

@miguel_11 I finished it in 3 days... It was so enchanting... Just didn't get some biblical parts, like why they told Pilates that Jesus didn't accept water when he indeed did?Were they fictional?Or in the end was Pilates really forgiven?
