Why should Privatization be Declared Illegal in Pakistan | Abdul Sattar

Privatization has numerous negative implications on the economic, social and welfare fronts. The private sector focuses on cost minimisation and profit maximisation, and hence, social aspects are ignored? In this session, the speaker will put his case in favor of declaring privatisation illegal in Pakistan.
About the Speaker:
Mr. Abdul Sattar is an Islamabad-based Pakistani journalist, having 22 year-experience in print and electronic media. He has worked for daily Dawn, Karachi, as a sub-editor; daily The News, Karachi, as a sub-editor; daily Nation & Kashmir Post, London, as an assistant editor; Unity Channel, London, as an anchor; Dawn News, English TV channel, Karachi, as a political reporter; Samaa TV, Karachi, as a senior reporter and Voice of Germany (DW Radio), Bonn, as a trainee editor. In addition to that he has contributed over 500 reports, interviews and articles to The News on Sunday, Lahore, The Nation on Sunday, Lahore, The Asian Age, New Delhi and The Star, Dhaka, working as a freelance journalist. Currently, he is working for the National Public Radio of America as a producer-cum-senior reporter, covering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Since his joining, the bureau has won two international awards. He happened to be the co-recipient of an international award for this story. Also, one of his stories had won Murrow Award 2019 in Hard News category.

What a ridiculous session. Every successful country in the modern day has followed privatization and free markets. This includes China! The state owned model failed and the Soviet Union is a prime example. Please name one example of a country in the top 10 economies of the world (G10) that don't have free market systems.

China. It is not a free market economy. Climate catastrophe is a result of free market economy. GATT, WTO are instruments of capitalist exploitation.

@@thydarkarts you people? I don't live in Pakistan buddy. I don't care for seeing the privatized industry of Pakistan turn into Europe, but more like the USA where I live and have seen how privatization has allowed society here to thrive economically, a scenario Pakistan can also do IF the government there actually gets its act together (regardless of who is in power). So it's great that you've pointed out the issues of nepotism in Pakistan. Anyone can do that, but what is the fix?

Worst session till date. Over simplified view. It's not capitalism Vs socialism...it is supposed to be capitalism and socialism both. Some things needs to be privatised to encourage cheap and good services. But at the same time social policy for the poor. UK, Europe, etc are capitalist + socialist.

It is not possible to mix socialism and capitalism. The central question is who owns the means of production, and what is the MoP being used for. Under capitalism, a few elites own the MoP and produce for profit. Under socialism, the masses own and democratically run the MoP and produce based on need.

A good speaker or scholar has the ability to convincingly answer questions that are raised by the audience. To that end, Mr. Abdul Sattar has performed excellently. He may not be an economist, but is definitely a very qualified journalist with a keen eye on global political and economic affairs. In Pakistan, we need honest and down-to-earth discussions to engage the masses into understanding the fundamentals and to let them freely express their views. While completely prohibiting the privatization process may not be possible legally, Mr Sattar has adequately discussed the underlying issues that have affected industrial productivity. These need to be addressed with integrity. Overall, it was a useful and an interesting talk. Thanks for organizing it.

Question: Why should Privatization be Declared Illegal in Pakistan? (Missing question mark in title, it's ok, it's pakistan 😃) Answer : Because in modern world religion is private matter BUT in pakistan it can not be private matter 😆😆😆 In pakistan religion has to be at start of every statement, has to be on roads, in government, in sports, in foreign relations, in hating Jews and Hnidus and what not. So Privatization must be Declared Illegal in Pakistan. One place where religion can be private in pakistan is answering natures call in the way religion dictates it 😜

I would ask if honesty is the prerequisite of nationalization then we should probably discuss how to weed out corruption instead to shooting the messenger so to speak. Govt needs to be powerful.. be it nationalization or privatization. If the govt is weak then it can not implement any law. Implementation requires money. So as long as the govt is powerful and reliable and cohesive enough to collect tax then that's the first step. Then we can talk about the govt involvement in business, aka nationalization, or privatization.

What a poor session this. Government should NOT be in the business of doing business, genius. It should be responsible for governance and public service. Health + Education + law enforcement + Public Service = Responsibility of the government. Everything else: Should be private. The government should create a smooth, digital and transparent environment for businesses to run and should collect taxes to be able to provide 100% free health and education. I live in Belgium and entire Western Europe is built on the above principle and it is an absolutely fantastic system!

Vague arguments to start with. All the Western Europe works with private entities, including their national carriers but importantly, they do not allow private companies to exploit people. It is all about law and order, writ of the government, and on top, justice, low/no corruption and honesty in the top leadership. This session is waste of resources and time.

Lecturer ought to be given credit for delivering a lecture without inserting English sentences with hideous accent. Yet the lecture is incoherent. Colonial confusion is all around. What Fredrick Hayek is doing in a Stone Age economy? No drinking water. No adequate schooling. Education means to think. How to think if the adults lack clarity. Adam Smith of the “Wealth of Nations” is not meant to be prophet. Nor is Keynes. Government is here to stay but trim and efficient and not fat and flabby. At least in a land with a rule of law. But the subject is of the “Lesser breeds of the Lawless Land.” First learn how to provide water to the Lesser breed. Then bring up the idea of “ Division of Labor.” Adam Smith wouldn’t be amused at the foreign venture of Papa Jones of Pakistan army-a vast Criminal Enterprise.
