There’s a reason traditional army thought from centuries ago believed you needed a 3 to 1 advantage if your enemy was in a defensive position and you were attacking it. You learn real quick that dynamic entry, even with a high level team, will get mowed down if the enemy has any semblance of an idea that your coming... in force on force training that is.

This is why when we deal with things like Fallujah in terms of door breaching and clearing. It would be really nice to have a heavy duty shield that is heavy enough to be moved in to absorb the bullets of any potential combatant inside. While it still is mobile enough to be used in that limited roll. Once you're done using it for the building. You can just strap it to the side of a Bradley or Humvee for ease of transport. It's save a lot of Marines lives but I can see where it'd be a little bit impractical as well. I just think a good old fashioned heavy piece of metal with a spalliner Could do wonders for taking those first couple of bullets.

My grandfather in WWII said room clearing was tossing in a grenade first and then spraying the room with automatic weapons fire. When I got to do force on force, it was doorways where things usually went south. First two guys got hit, blocked the doorway, the guys behind them hesitated long enough to pretty much turn the entry into chaos. We also find some interesting ways to defeat entry teams which I won't share here for OPSEC reasons. If you recall the Oakland incident, 1 perp killed 4 cops , including two SWAT team members with an SKS. The perp didn't respond in the fashion the team had trained for.

His point was that often you have no tactical advantage clearing by yourself (without flashbangs or grenades) since a home invader could easily set up an ambush position that you end up walking into. A good tactician always has the upper hand, not operating from a deficit position.

Thank you for your service!! Great, very important information! I've been to some well respected 'gun fighting schools' that have individuals clear rooms through a 'fun house' With no discussion on why this is a very bad idea or what the ODDA loop is. Doing a force on force exercise quickly shows how dangerous this is! Unless I have to save a family member, I will stay in the room (while very well armed and ready), call 911 and wait for the cavalry to arrive. *hopefully they are well trained* If I have to clear, my 2 dogs lead the way to warn me of the possible danger. Stacked Professionals with body armor and flash bangs or grenades is the only way to go. But even then, there's a good chance of casualties. This is why I have great respect for the hard guys that go into harm's way knowing they might not make it back! This is not a video game with extra lives!

Room clearing has always been a fear of mine for these very reasons. I never saw how it could possibly be done safely and efficiently and conventionally without a flash grenades in every room or a room clearing drone of some kind. If it were optional, I would love to be able to see through walls by drilling holes and sticking cameras in them or giving good guys X-ray goggles of some kind to use. Thermal vision could possibly be used? Or cut power to the building and use nightvision. ANYTHING MAN! I HATE THE IDEA OF A FAIR FIGHT WITH A BAD GUY. Thats because it cannot be done safely. Theres a reason the title says its a bad idea, and the door is called the fatal funnel. Unless you have trained enough to be able to do it completely from muscle memory, please dont even attempt it. Thermals cannot see through glass, wood or metal, and it can be hard to distinguish obstacles if they are the same temp as the surroundings. Night vision gives an advantage in the dark, but you sacrifice your field of view and depth perception. Ashor Yakhnis limited penetration may be better for 1-2 person clearing and better target acquisition/more precise shots. Or if the squad is less experienced or unfamiliar with each other. Not recommended if the enemy has automatic weapons, explosives, or there are a lot of them. The best you can do is have a strong pointman that will make the decision of how far to go in, and everyone who follows keeps up and doesnt go past.

Thank you so much for making this clear!! I tell people all the time they are dumb when they talk about "clearing" their house at night, or "clearing the location" in any situation, just because they go to the range and shoot a few mags here and there... It is pathetic how many people think they are some sort of "John Wick" just because they own a pistol and an AR that they will MABEY shoot 1,000 rounds through ever. And not even while moving, not even while in shoot houses, not even under stress... Just flat range, shooting at targets and they think they are going to "clear a building"... It just makes me shake my head and laugh to the point where i can't even bother correcting them anymore because it happens just too often. People watch too many Hollywood movies, and think they could just roll on in and take over a building with their "tactics"... 95% of people who shoot do NOT have what it takes to even remotely even the odds.. And most of them would just get smoked, or become so scared in the moment they would just wait in their bedroom and call 911 anyways... Which is what i advocate... Unless you have children on the other end of the house to protect, then stay in your damn room and wait to ambush the intruder... Don't walk out and let him do the same to you just because you think you can... Stupid people man... Stupid people...

First guy through the door very likely will be shot and number 2 man needs to use number 1 as a human shield by grabbing the back of his plate carrier and holding him up while firing M4 with the other hand (hopefully all hits going to the plate armor).

They say that because if they were in team, group most likely they will prevail. Room clearing does work. If you are taught to the highest levels. Certainly did for us and certainly did for the lone SAS lad that wiped out the terrorists at the health resort a couple of days ago when he heard the gunshots grabbed his kit and went it. Granted if they are strong pointing a room your going to have casualties but as previous guy said we are trained for that too.

14 rooms in the building you are breaching that's 14 flash bangs. First one goes off notifies the threat in the other rooms they get the jump on you while you are still clearing room 1.

It’s true +Zeberdee But there is also a first element of surprise and a second element. Loss of the first does not mean complete loss of the second. They know you are coming, but not exactly when or from where. This 2nd element isn’t even close to as good as the 1st element, but it’s enough to appreciate the value and capitalize on what can be gained

World war 2 had a solution. 1. Draw a figure 8 with bullets from any firearm, preferrably a BAR on to intended room. 2. Frag the room. 3. Enter the room. 4. Shoot any hostiles left. (They're probably shocked and awed already). ... Yeah, but there's a reason why we dont do it anymore. Edit: to guys seeing this, i just read this somewhere the internet sometime ago during my own research for home defense, please do use common sense. Stay safe.

There was one interview clip in a documentary where the guy said the Anglo-American (or maybe he was Canadian I can't remember) forces used Bofors anti aircraft guns to shoot houses and barns in France and that at least once it was enough to get germans they shot at to immediately lay down arms. I don't think those gun crews ever had to risk their necks with room clearing.

Actually the tactics of old made a resurgence in Iraq. Instead if stacking up they reverted to the old bunker clearing methods of ww2. Secured the surroundings then entered. If it's a completely hostile landscape with no enemies there is no reason not to do this.

During WW2 it was very uncommon that there would be civilians present in an urban area during the fighting, and even farmers would leave upon the arrival of the danger. If they didn't leave on their own they were sometimes ran out by the troops, for their safety. Of course these weren't combatants disguising themselves as civvies and attempting to blend in with the town folk. It was a very different mentality at the time. They were soldiers proudly wearing a uniform with a conscious that would want to avoid getting civilians killed, even on the other side. When the enemy was headed for a town they would clear out the civilians ahead of time and take up defensive positions as well as perhaps set up ambushes up the road. These days it would appear most of these low life's couldn't care less about the lives of innocents around them and won't hesitate to hide among them.

@@pictishbynature1522 I know you meant to say "no friendlies" in that last sentence, but just to clarify for others. Agree with this approach too. Just stock up on more flash bangs and frags.

In the absence of hostages the way our military clears rooms is stupid. It risks our shooters unnecessarily, if you you do not have offensive (Low Frag) grenades and will not give your soldiers the option to frag and clear from the outset you shouldn't be in that country in the first place. Like most everywhere we have been for the last 16+ years. Civilians and cops are an entirely different and separate issue, i'd err on the side of keeping cops as hamstrung and disarmed as possible given their eagerness to use violence and tendency to use a SWAT teams to brake up poker games, child support warrants, or any time someone calls the cops on their neighbor because he is growing marijuana in his garden.

Our military doesn't typically clear like that unless there is the possibility of friendlies or noncombatants present. Guaranteed no friendlies/noncombatants? F$%# that room and everything in it.
