    Oh yes. I changed my mountain bike to a single speed, not knowing what to expect. But I tell you, it's like your a kid again, just enjoying the ride, not being all adult about gearing and components etc. I'm looking at a single speed road bike/ well, a fixed gear track bike for the road 👍

    I live in an italian prealpine district, I ride a 34:18 single speed chromoly frame (fully rigid) MTB. In a certain way is more relaxing. I made the conversion of an old 90s Bianchi Ibex to single speed during the 2020 lockdown thinking it could be a funny experiment......now I prefer to ride that bike.

    What i love about single speeds is the fact that u can just hop on and ride away, day in and day out. Easy to clean, nothing to break or smash, nothing to adjust. Its just you getting on the bike and pedalling away.

    I would think it you know where you are going (say you go to work with it and shop and stuff) you can just use 1 year that works well. Might not be absolutely optimal but it would take a pretty serious hill or some fast riding to be too much for about a 3 to 1 ratio. You can also just walk a bike up any really crazy homebound you find them

    single speed got me into cycling, I bought a cheap bike and I didn't know anything about derailleurs but I was handy so I cut the chain into a single speed once I was on the road I was hooked, then fixed gear, then road biking and currently I am planning my second tour from SF to LA : ) full on roadie : )

    I grew up riding bmx bikes for transportation purposes. Was always on it, loved it. Stopped once I got my license. I bought a couple geared bikes as a grown up but I never liked it. The chain flopping around was really irritating for me. And all the maintenance of all that extra crap. I just fixed up a single speed and it seems perfect for me. I don’t look like a old man riding bmx bike around town, and I don’t have to worry about all the technology below my feet.

    I’m a 65 year old Brit, and I’ve just completed a Portugal end to end on a fixed gear. I was a reasonable cyclist already but fixed gear improved me no end. Portugal (particularly the north) is hilly and After much trial and error decided on a 34/15 gear setup. Could zig zag up up the more extreme gradients but downhill was spinning like a madman. On reflection I would have fitted a back break, reversed the hub and freewheeled those descents, though compromising the fixed gear ethic. Love the challenge.

    I love my newly purchased single speed. As you’ve mentioned it is bomb proof as far as it not falling apart at the drive train a couple times a ride, or the drive train not doing what you ask of it leaving you to work around it till it works it self out. If not you’re forced to get off the bike to fix it yourself which is a dirty and unnecessary job when you have an alternative single speed. Also my new single speed bike doesn’t have a front suspension, or seat post suspension, and it isn’t even noticed whatsoever. That and the more simplified drive train brings down the weight, and a sleeker frame does that too along with it looking nicer which simplicity/practicality is not only an even better looker, but again the overall practicality of being more reliable, and easier to lift when needed puts a smile on my face.

    I commute to the park and grocery store on a plus size single speed beach cruiser with 3 inch wheels. I love it because it's super easy to fix absorbs all side walk bumps because I don't like the road. I can get up hills pretty easy but I focus on momentum and power just before hitting the hill. The coaster brake doesn't seem to require maintenance for over a year because the bike slows on it's own once you stop pedaling. When there's wind though it becomes tiring. I do want something with more speed now, but I feel like any smaller tires will feel faster so SS over gears would still be my choice. Are you plus size road tires on your bike, let me know the size and the kind of bike. Thanks for sharing your story.

  • @YourFavoriteCyclist

    @YourFavoriteCyclist

    My road bike doesn't really have plus size tires, I have 700c x 25cc Continental Gatorskins on it. Going along with swapping out skinnier tires to go faster easier, it definetly works. When I was commuting by bike I swapped my mountain bike tires from a 26x2.3 out for some 26x1.5 and the difference in efficiency was huge!

  • @YourFavoriteCyclist

    @YourFavoriteCyclist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Similar idea, most of those bikes were a coaster brake style on the rear. Most beach cruiser bikes have the same setup. They essentially have a lever from the rear wheel to the rear frame so when you pedal backwards it pushes on the lever and activates the brake inside the hub.

    I really believe in Florida you don't need anything more than a single speed. I rode from one side of the state to the other with 99% in the same gear, could have easily kept it in the same gear. But on the other hand, if you're almost anywhere else, I think most folks will want gears, a lot of them.

    I have a retrospec single gear speed bike. And I was wondering if this is usually meant for working out because after I ride for 30 mins or so my thighs to get sore after and it’s like a cardio workout. Is it an actual workout

  • @YourFavoriteCyclist

    @YourFavoriteCyclist

    3 жыл бұрын

    So I took a look at the specs on those bikes and essentially they're built as tanks. Steel frame and heavier stronger wheels will definitely make it feel like a workout. They market those bikes as an urban commuter bike pretty much made to take any kind of abuse you can throw at them, definitely not the lightest bike out there for sure.

    That's a good question. For a basic single speed bike made for the road you can pick one up for under $400. For a mountain bike your choices are much much more limited. I don't know of a company that makes a out of the box single speed mountain bike other than a dirt jumper. The dirt jumpers are going to be around the $1000 range.

    Walmart sells a 700c Kent ridge land hybrid road bike single speed for $98 and a 700c Kent thruster with a flip flop hub with a single speed gear on one side and a fixed gear on the other for $150 . Good bikes to start out on. If you decide you hate riding you won’t be out much money. For $300 you can buy better single speeds with flip flop hubs like state cycles, and so on which are pretty nice stock and easy and cheap to upgrade later if you decide you love riding. I started out buying a hard tail mountain bike. Went from that to a full suspension mountain bike. Went to a 24 speed road bike. And now I’m riding a fixing with a flip flop hub. No more adjustments every time I ride. No more chain popping on hills. It’s a better workout and more fun on flats. Once you ride a lot you don’t need all those lazy gears. They are more trouble than they are worth.

    I have a multi-gear bike and it's awful, I only ever ride it in the 2 hardest gears, but since I din't have thausands to spend on a bike with a good groupset it breaks around every 150km and needs frequent stops every 50km on gravel to clean and relube or it'll stop shifting and in addition to that I need to replace the cassette and chain at the same time from wear around every 250-300km. It's too expensive and unreliable and annoying to maintain, but it's nice for mountainous terrain.

    That's what most people say about single speeders haha. It really just depends on the terrain around you. If you live in a generally flat area it's a whole lot nicer than in a largely hilly area. Those old cruiser bikes are super simple and pretty much bullet proof. That's the biggest plus to them and why people love riding them. If it gets you out riding and you like it just ride it!

    From an enginner's perspective: bicycle drivetrains are hilariously overpriced, awfully designed products that were engineered to optimize profit, not quality, e.g: planned obsolescence - every part has an expiry date, your derailleur will break, your bb, crankset, and you need to replace the whole cassette! uninnovative design: who the hell thought splash lubricating gears into grit would be a good idea? internal gearboxes are a thing and you can just belt drive it too, never replace those parts again. Dumbassery: most components are metric, not the aluminium-steel threads on a crank arm because those need to be 12.43mm dia & there's no shank on the load-bearing bolt too!

    Looks like that's his natural motion or expression so stop whining unless you're out there making "perfect" videos with zero hand motions..

    @@robertb.3651 So does Dr. Strange though when he's opening portals to another dimension. He uses that cool ass hand circle motion I love to practice. The best example is in the final battle in End Game. Captain America looks like he has given it his all, but is going to lose without help. The future looks bleak guys because all heroes are down. All of a sudden you hear "On your left Cap". Here comes Falcon. A charismatic black man that can fly to help his white patriotic brother out. It was a great message of what we can accomplish if we all work together. Gave me chills! Then a bunch of portals start opening from Dr. Stranges assistants using hand signals. Hand signals are the future Bro!!! A sign of having an ability. This guy uses them to ride single speed, Thor uses them to call his hammer. I practice energy blast with them. Lets work together and learn from each others hand signals instead of tearing each other apart. Just think about what I said. I love you man. You take care of yourself, alright.
