    Red Dwarf is one of the greatest TV shows ever. Hilarious characters and a wonderful premise and some of the greatest pieces of comedic writing of all time. The opening 5 minutes of Legion has more humour than most comedy shows these days have in entire seasons "Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb" "Broadcast in all known frequencies and all known languages, including Welsh"

    The Americans only ever came up with ONE classic TV comedy, M*A*S*H! And its successor, After-M*A*S*H. Other than these shows, they make feeble attempts to copy British classic comedy shows with moderate success at best, to zero success at worst. The best thing America could've done was to screen the original versions of the British shows.

    Red Dwarf is one of my favorite TV shows. As you say, the chemistry of the characters is phenomenal. From a purely sci-fi perspective though, it actually has a leg up on other sci-fi shows: because it is a comedy and doesn't give two hoots about continuity, it can explore much wilder ideas than a serious sci-fi show could ever get away with. Polymorph, DNA, Back To Reality, The Inquisitor, Justice, the list goes on and on. Try to imagine the plot of any of those episodes shoehorned into, say, Star Trek, and it just wouldn't work. So apart from being extremely funny and generally just a good show, it also deals with wilder concepts and ideas than almost any other sci-fi show in existence.

    Here's something you may not know - the book, Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, explains why Lister brought the cat on-board. Originally, he ended up in space after a drunken birthday celebration, and is trying to get back to earth. He signs up with the Jupiter Mining company to try to do this, and smuggles the cat on then takes a picture with it to intentionally get thrown in stasis, so he doesn't have to put up with the long trip back to Earth. Love the show, favorite episode is probably Polymorph.

    a large issue with UK TV shows, is that the actors in them are in quite big demand, and it can take a lot of time to arrange for everyone to be in the same place at the same time, Sherlock & Red Dwarf are probably some of the bigger examples of this, and why it takes so long to get new series done, and often with large gaps :( Red Dwarf is probably another of Britains best comedy shows though, so agreed there!

  • @jamesgray5790

    There's also the fact that UK shows don't sign actors to extremely lucrative contracts for X number of seasons like US shows do, meaning that they're more inclined to take other roles, even if that means leaving the show to do so. It's funny how comparatively few actors leave US shows due to the dreaded "fear of typecasting" like British actors do; obviously making a fortune supersedes concerns about "playing the same role forever".

  • @BritishAdam

    @BritishAdam

    5 жыл бұрын

    They're often contractually signed for X series, but there is rarely any sort of proper time frame of when that is going to occur, this was true of Freeman & Cumberbatch for Sherlock, although I do not believe their contract signs them on for a 5th season that everyone assumes will occur, given Cumberbatch has said he's keen to re-appear as the character. Indeed, Doctor Who is suffering from a chance of not airing a normal series next year, due to the busyness of Jodie Whittaker, she does a lot of other stuff here, the shooting for the next Who series won't occur until early 2019, which may not be enough time to post produce everything. (sources are readily available if you google for that) - latest rumours are Chibnall & Whittaker may even pull out before that recording gets started (again, google can provide sources) Back the 80s, we (the British) had a lot of TV shows that run for several seasons without major characters leaving for 10+ years (I'm thinking of 'Allo 'Allo & Are You Being Served?), but definitely since then, we do tend to get actors in the modern era of sitcoms leaving more often and the sitcoms not lasting as long as most people would like. I'd love to see the UK produce a show that goes on to have the longevity of something like The Big Bang Theory, but it seems that, at least in the UK, that sort of stuff isn't possible any more :(

    correct me if i'm wrong but the Red Dwarf actors didn't really do THAT much other stuff. I believe one of the big reasons for gaps is with UK stuff it tends to be minimal writers, where as with US there is more often than not a team of writers. Red dwarf originally had two writers, now only one.

    I love it very much. Its such an underdog in a way. It really should not work. It had a tiny budget, was put on TV by the BBC only because they had a slot and nothing else to fill it with. The execs didn't get it. And its cast were none of them actual actors. Craig Charles (lister) was an angry poet, Chris Barrie (Rimmer) was an impressionist, Danny John-Jules (Cat) was a dancer and Norman Lovett (Holly) was a comedian.

    Way back when the whole thing started my then husband worked really late and late night tv was frankly pants. So, I would record any programmes that he would otherwise have missed. This also included anything I thought he might be interested in. I recorded the first episode of Red Dwarf for him. We both turned into fans from that moment on. I agree with most of what you said, but Kryten is the mother hen without whom Lister would of succumbed to some fatal disease from over smeggy underwear. Who can forget the massive snit over a late attendance to dinner involving, of all things, a great big tank in a Jane Austin simulation. I love the conversation between Kryten and the ship's psychiatrist when the nanobots rebuild not only Red Dwarf, but the whole crew as well. What about when Holly got restored but her run time got massively reduced? The one with Talkie Toaster, the white hole and the never ending conversation. So many gem moments to remember. Red Dwarf survives on Dave. (Part of the UKTV group.) Fans are just grateful whenever the actors can get together these days on a new series or two. Stoke me a clipper!

    There was a text adventure of Red Dwarf, I remember playing it a long time ago. The book also tells more of how Lister got onto the Red Dwarf. Basically he got drunk at a bar on Earth and woke up on Mars. He had no id and no money, and was living in a box at the spaceport. They caught him, and he was sentenced to serve on the Mining Vessel Red Dwarf as the very lowest ranking. But the Voyage even though taking about 5 years would end at Earth so he got a job and free ride back to Earth.

    So glad you made this video! I discovered the show late last year, and was instantly hooked! It's definitely worth you catching up on whatever series you've missed. Series X to XII are incredible, and many episodes are as good as those from the classic run, especially Officer Rimmer and Mechocracy from the latest two seasons. I definitely agree about Rimmer though. You don't realise until he's gone, temporarily in series VII how essential his personality is to the make up and feel of the show. And I'm not sure if it's because of how great he is in the newer series, or my love of Robert Llewellyn in general, but I find Kryten to be one of my favourite characters, not my least. Each to their own, though, I suppose.

    Great assessment dude. I'm lucky enough to have some original read-through scripts with hand-written notes and changes on them, as one of my lecturers at college was the Commissioning Editor at the BBC who brought this show to the screen. He said it was a "very-well thumbed script" meaning it had been everywhere before it had reached him, but was yet to be commissioned by anyone. He said he took a chance on it being very different from anything they had taken on before. We often did script readings then watched how it was translated on the screen in the finished show. I often read for Lister as I had been a fan of the show from the start, about 5 years earlier.

    I hope this video exposes more new fans to red dwarf! Mst of Red Dwarf (at least up until s11, last time I checked) is on Netflix (UK), and you can also watch it on UKTV (the Dave catchup player), and there are STILL multiple reruns on Dave. If you haven't watched the modern series yet, spoiler alert (?) But they reference this in the TV show. "How does it feel to have a TV channel named after you?" It's very meta humour, quite a good update for a newer audience. There's not much internal consistency from s2/3-onwards, and part of the meta humour of the show seems to evolve into saying "fuck you for thinking any of this established back story was important", and they sometimes explore interdimensional travel and other dimensions (especially regarding Ace Rimmer [what a guy]). It's like Rick and Morty, but back when Dan Harmon was still toddling around in the USA.

Years later I discovered "The Young Ones" and wished there was a sci-fi version of that, which led a year or two later to discovering Red Dwarf. Besides the entire series there are excellent documentaries made by the cast and film crew that shed a lot of light on the creation and decisions that made it such a fan favorite. All that plays into British humor which I still prefer to American humor.
