Why Pilots Loved Flying the Thud
The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is a supersonic fighter-bomber designed to carry-out low-altitude strikes against strategic targets. The F-105 evolved from a nuclear strike plane to become a versatile plane with a variety of unique features. These planes were vital to the early stages of the Vietnam War, and the F-105 was eventually chosen to carry out the Wild Weasel role which is one of the most deadly missions in the history of the United States Air Force. What impressed me the most about the F-105 was the bravery of its pilots..May God bless them all.
The aircraft of this era have always held a special place in my heart.
My Uncle flew F105's in the mid 60's. Loved the plane, was fast down low, carried a good load of bombs and brought him home! He was in a book awhile back for his 100th mission instead of taking a Mild Run he went and bombed Hanoi as best as he good to get back for losing a lot of friends! Glen Gidel is his name!
I watched this video because I wanted to know the reason for the title, "Why Pilots Loved Flying the Thud". I'm disappointed that this was not even addressed.

Dad was a THUD pilot, finished his 100 missions in January 1966. I think every pilot loved flying the machine they were assigned. The machine that took you into battle and hopefully brought you back to base. Speed was probably the main drive for most THUD pilots. Flying in hotter then ordered and then lighting the afterburner to get out of dodge. @@vaporedskies yeah so many of these was shot down by heroic VNAF pilots , many north vietnamese pilots become ace after slaughtering thuds
Some errors/ perhaps typos I found: 7:34 Pretty sure that's MK.82 bomb or in general just a "dumb" bomb, not an ECM pod as labeled. 7:49 That's clearly not a Sidewinder. That thing is an AGM-45 Shrike used for SEAD/DEAD aka "Wild Weasel" mission profile. In the end, the video was well done, however, the video's tittle in question is misleading since that question isn't even answered during the video, as stated by another fellow here in the comment section. Fun Fact: The nickname "Thud" was given not as short for "Thunderchief" (although prob?), but for the sound people said it did when crashing.

I’ve heard both stories about the ‘Thud’ nickname. It was the sound it made when hitting the ground, or it’s named after Chief Thunderthud from Howdy Doody. I think the latter was dreamed up to provide a more palatable story than the former.

I was a kid growing up near MacDill AFB during the Vietnam War. I used to bug fighter pilots all the time and Thud pilots tended to be more humble than F4 pilots. They told me they loved their Thuds because they could sustain huge damage as in missing chunks and still return to base.
EF-105? No F-105F or G model. Wild Weasels.

Interesting that you have a British accent, but use American spellings ("vapored").

It’s a computer
Whenever I see this aircraft I think of the dumb bombing and doubtless thousands of innocent civilians including little kids killed, injured and traumatised as a result of its use in SE Asia.
