WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THAILAND ANYMORE

Thailand has long been a popular destination for tourists, expats, digital nomads and backpackers. The theme when I've spoken to certain people and read comments and watched videos on KZread have been that people aren't liking Thailand like they used to, here's why they don't like it and why I love it!

If you lived in Thailand long enough you'll grow tired of the fake smiles and the deep-hidden resentment the natives have against you. After a few years, you'll grow weary of having surface-level relationships. Hyper-individualistic hedonism won't make you happy. That being said, some of us are losing our homelands to mass immigration and places like Thailand seem like the last best option to live, at least during the European winter.

  • @joshbonthemove

I respect your opinion and agree hedonism won’t make you happy but there’s many assumptions made here about how everyone lives who goes to Thailand. Sunrise and sunset walks, swimming, Muay Thai, exploring, culture, meeting new people… these are all not hedonism. Spending all your time and money in bars and on girls is hedonism, sure that’s an appeal of Thailand and can be fun but the country has a lot more to offer than that.

Thai people love to avoid confrontation so we always put up the smile. This i’m talking about general Thai people, not the one who love to scam in tourist area which can happen in any tourist places around the world. And resentment toward foreigners? Do you see any Asian country which have many actor/actress celebrity which mix westerners that much like Thailand? If you watch the news, there are people protest against the tourists in some tourist cities in Europe countries, the tourists take the places for a living from the local, because of Airbnb make the renting price higher so the local suffer. Japanese in some place also complain about the tourists and government even ban the tourist in some area. Thailand have many tourists and Bangkok is the most visited city in the world but do you hear the news about Thai people protest or complain about the tourist? Thais don’t complain but some of them in tourist area also fed up with some entitle tourists, but yeah they keep putting the smile as it’s a polite way.

The beauty of cities like Bangkok are the dichotomies that you get to experience such as noise and pollution. I don't personally enjoy loud noises (so I avoid bars, clubs so on) however in a city full of cars, motorbikes and tuk-tuks there were big parks throughout the city to escape the sounds. My lodging was on the sixth floor and I couldn't hear any street noise and at the top of the building it was practically silent. When you travel you can't expect a city or village to have everything that you are looking for you must embrace that it will have a fair amount of what you enjoy and a fair amount of what you don't enjoy. Don't visit countries like Thailand with the expectation of only consuming western food, using taxis and only staying in tourist areas you will never be able to appreciate the culture. Find your level of comfort and learn the step a little outside of that.

Two things I'd like to add about the law. #1 respect is everything in Thailand. Do not say anything negative about the government. But most importantly, never say anything negative about the royal family. You can be deported for a minor such offense. #2, contrary to most places, you can be held accountable legally/civilly for giving good faith aid and comfort a an accident victim, if things go south. Even something as small as putting something soft under the head of a victim. As a retired paramedic this flies in the face of my values. But unless you're willing to risk your family fortunes, stay away from helping accident victims.

If you like to live a long time in Thailand you have to try to understand the culture. In general Thai people are very friendly. They have their pride. Be polite. Try to speak their language. And if you visit some not so well known places, you will get a different experience then in the touristic hot spots. Food is great. Prices are still cheap. And take care you hang out with the right people. Visas are not really difficult. Just take care of the paperwork. Every immigration office can help you with information about what you need for certain visas. You cannot not own land but you can lease it long term. It's hot. But your body gets used to it. If you get bored in Thailand. (Hanging out in bars) There are plenty of other things to do. Fitness. Walking on the beach. Going to the local temple. Learning meditation. Taking care of your local community. You will get what you give. You manifest your own future. No place is perfect. It's always you.

I had all of your opinions back in the 90's when I first visited and chose to say in Thailand in the 90s. GENERALITIES: *Thailand is STILL great for hols* BUT the *purely* surface level superficial relationships are all you can expect from 99.999999999% of the locals. They're polite and that's a refreshing difference to the west but most should listen to "Smiling Faces' by the Undisputed Truth (do it NOW - it's a superb tune) on repeat on their flight out. As the song says, the truth is in the eyes! Thailand has massive (and misplaced imho) nationalist pride / xenophobia but they do hide it well. It's the opposite of New York where locals come off as rude buggers but often have hearts of pure gold beneath their exterior shells. I prefer straight shooters to snides but that's just me (and ofc it's also a generalisation - If you want to insult a weak man, tell him the truth...*and vice versa*). Compounding that problem is fact that the quality of expats is VERY low - the average is 'harmless scumbag' but there are also some very dangerous 'expats' there who are safe in the knowledge that they could murder you and, IF caught, could easily pay their way out of trouble (read up on the 'Red Bull heir driver' who got eggy in traffic and drove into a number of strangers inc a policeman and killed them - now free as a bird (obvs he's not an expat but same rules apply if you ever want to get away with manslaughter / murder :-) For all of these reasons the place is super transient - i.e bonds you do make don't tend to last - people die or move (I anticipate naive millys thinking, "yeah but that applies to everywhere" but if they have the balls to move they can test the theory as I DID : ) After a while you question the value of investing in relationships. RE: "cheap": rent is cheap & human labour is very cheap in Thailand (inc. the ladies which is a massive draw for many). However, if you buy anything made outside of the country (electronics, wine, quality products, etc.), Thailand can be very expansive due to BIG import taxes. You mentioned the heat - it's awful in hot season - it drains your energy and you often feel trapped inside as you might in the depths of a western winter. If you plan to work (digi gonads) don't assume you'll be anywhere near as productive. The food is delicious and cheap but is greasy, cooked in reused seed oil and lacks nutritional value - basically it's unhealthy. If you want decent western food you'll pay through the nose (hence the 'it's expensive" comments). Knowing millys, (imho often too cool for school know it alls) many will discount all these comments and, if they make the move, learn the hard way. Having said all of the above I'm still considering moving back out there permanently as *I know what I'll face* and see what is happening to this country (UK) aided by well meaning idealistic ('suicidally empathic') idiots who see no issue with ushering in millions and millions of g/immigrants forever who are transforming the UK into a mishmashed high tax / high free benefits economic area - it's increasingly no longer a nation - just a bunch of people who don't agree on anything other than to never cause any offence to anyone - let alone complete pee takers - in this respect Thai 'xenophobia' is a blessing. *Imho* at the moment quality of life is much better than Thailand BUT the UK has just elected a hard left socialist (own nothing & be happy?) government so, if you have done OK for yourself, look out! Anyway, apologies if this comes across as longwinded, blunt rude or whatever but it's 'my truth' so please wish me luck! Good Luck to you all, wherever and whatever you choose to do. PS. If you're condidering the move remember to listen to and meditate on "Smiling Faces' by the Undisputed Truth

One thing that a lot a people complain about is being overcharged by being a tourist. Most of it can be avoided by taking a few simple steps. Let's take a local vegetable/fruit market, if one just walks around one can gage the cost of most anything by checking the price that are posted on some stands. If one likes some stand that doesn't have marked prices one will know , by asking in advance, if they will be overcharged. Same with transportation, if staying at a hotel one can ask them the cost to get somewhere, ask an expat, if possible, or even ask the place where one is buying a meal. With a bit of time and experience one can learn "the running's" like they say in Jamaica, the true cost of most anything.

Like if someone doesn't like snow and ice, maybe they shouldn't go to Finland or Iceland in the middle of winter. Ditto with accommodations, even in the poorest of countries one can spend big money for 5 star accommodations. Overcharging can never be 100% avoided, but it can greatly reduce, like you said one has some general wits and one does a bit of research before getting there. Keep up the good work.

The only time I used a scooter taxi was once in Bangkok where it can be impossible to get a car. The cost of a BOLT (Uber) car is dirt cheap...as in like $20usd for a 70 mile ride (that would run you $300+ in Los Angeles) so it does not make any sense to get on a scooter. Thailand has the #1 or #2 highest count in scooter fatalities in The World! it isn't worth it! This is truly The Greatest Place to live! The best time of the year to visit Thailand is between November and February. What I like about Thailand is that there are so many choices: You could go crazy and go to eat on fancy restaurants and stay in luxury accommodations and pay a lot of money, or you can live like a local and stay in modest accommodations, eating at the markets, etc. Overall Thailand is a very good value for what you got. In Australia, luxury accommodation could cost you easily thousands of dollars a week while in Thailand that is what you will pay for a month for a nice Condo in Pattaya. Eating where the locals eat will save you a lot of money too.

Well done, Josh. We live in Patong 5-6 months per year and spend 34000 baht on a pretty nice 1 bedroom condo with pool and gym close to the beach and Bangla. I pay 3700/mo for a motorbike. I'm 66 and heal slower than I used to, but riding a bike in a place filled with inexperienced/drunk motorcyclists is risky regardless of age. Traffic makes travel by car pretty slow. You really need to be a solid driver if you're going to do the bike, and most long term expats will tell you that if you ride long enough, an accident is near certain. Solid content. Keep it up.

Nice video mate, always lovely when other people show their appreciation for my homeland. I just came here to say that it is possible to drive safely in Thailand. A lot of westerners come here and make the mistake of going back on western autopilot as soon as they're in command of a vehicle. You have to keep your wits about you and never assume that any other motorist knows the rules, or will follow them. Pretend they're all learners if that helps. That means things like never blindly trusting the lights, or thinking that the pickup about to do a u-turn has surely clocked you already as you barrell down the right-most lane, etc.

I live in Phayao. Big home, somewhat large farm (16 hectare). Costs are about 1k US per month. Go to Bangkok twice a month to party and sing classic rock in the clubs. Advice: Respect the culture. Always tell your issues to the bar owner and it will be handled. Of course, you should always dash the person addressing your issues. Been in Thailand since 2019.

Im in Hua Hin right now and have just watched the police pull over cars on the main road, checking for whatever, but did not even bother with the many motorcyclists riding without helmuts, even the tourists. Just remember if you hire a bike you must hace a motorcycle licence from your home country and an international permit otherwise your travel insurance company wont honour a claim if you are in an accident.

I have lived and worked here (Bangkok) for almost 23 years and just came across this channel and I have to say; most down to earth and truthful analyses and advice I have heard in a long time. Thailand is still really cheap, safe and the Thais are still really friendly people as long as you stay away from Phuket and, to a lesser extend, Pattaya. Co-worker of mine went to Phuket for 5 days and came back needing a holiday, that's how stressfull it is down there where everyone wants one thing from you: your money. Things are so different outside the really touristy areas.

Agreed, as having lived and worked in Thailand for 21 years, ate thai, spoke thai, married to a thai, contact to lots of thai people and family, friends on the market, restaurants, banks and offices as well, even could become friends with a major of southern thai immigration, always loved the openness and friendliness, hospitality of thai people, specially before around 2000ish, after that foreigners started "developing" places of tourist interests, "condos" and private residences encircled by walls, even guards at the entrance, signs popped up saying: "Private Property"....then rapidly things deteriorated a lot and with the years passing by things got much worse, much more traffic, a once tropical paradise became a concrete rich mans heaven, Big-C, Tesco-Lotus, more and more concrete jungle replaced the real one, all the fast food and fashion chains one can think of started to set up business, small business could fell the heat of the competition, likewise rent went skyrocketing, this wasn't anymore my slice of the pie, after 2011 my time had come to say good bye...now Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam rock !

I like Thailand as destination, but prefer Bali regarding accommodation. If people can’t afford life in Thailand then look at Indonesia, it’s a bit cheaper. We stay at the 5 star hotel muse, in a terrace suite, €280 a Night for 110 m2 with a huge roof terrace, in one of the most exclusive areas of Bangkok, for that you struggle even to get a central 4 star 21 m2 hotel in most European capitals. We only had food poisoning once, which actually was a pricy restaurant, a rough night, followed by a few pills in the morning, not worth talking about, but never got sick due to street food. If you worry, about driving around on a rented bike, then don’t. Taxis or cars with drivers, means you don’t need to worry about traffic and leaves you to relax, transport is cheap even in Bangkok. Security, depends on where you go. We ain’t the type, getting drunk as a skunk, we stay, eat, shop and visit nice places, where luxury clothing, bags and watches are ok to wear safely.

I love Thailand! This video gives a very realistic assessment of what a foreigner will find there. I stayed there for 3 months from January till late March under unusual circumstances. I had taught in China very briefly, but the school, city, housing, and food were beyond horrid. I applied for a teaching job in Bangkok at the suggestion of a former teaching colleague of mine living there. For reasons not clear to me, the teaching job, as well as two others I applied to, vanished once I got to the country in spite of being told I was hired. What to do? I stayed with this former colleague who was a completely nasty slob living in a filthy house, so I cleaned her house once a week for a few hundred baht, which I spent on food and tuktuks. I spent my days exploring the city via tuktuk and on foot, and in the process fell in love with loud crazy Bangkok. I haunted the open-air markets and ate incredibly fresh, clean, delicious food, and even began to learn a few cooking techniques and recipes from cooks I observed. I got to know my neighbors who gifted me with fresh mangoes from their trees, bites of little chocolate cakes, wonderfully tasty soups, and so much more. I greeted the temple cats on my daily walks and breathed in the fragrance of the many flowering trees and bushes. Finally, I saved enough money to leave. I could go on and on, but one thing is for sure, I would go back to Thailand in a heartbeat!

Not what is used to be. In 2010 and before, Thailand was amazing. Very bad hygiene and low quality of food, getting used to it doesn’t mean it’s ok. It’s very bad for your health in the long run. A lot of road accidents, dangerous roads. Avoid bikes, take a taxi. Air pollution in some areas and it’s getting worse. Low quality of everything, real estate, services (apart from thai massages). Not that cheap anymore, even expensive compared to 15-10 years ago, prices are rapidly rising, enjoy Thailand now as it won’t be cheap for long anymore… People don’t smile that much anymore, less friendly than before (but I understand why, so won’t blame).
