    I think something often overlooked in the parasocialism conversation is that it really comes down to how the human brain is wired to form social connections. Its a normal, hard wired thing to form these connections and its those without the wherewithal to see through the modern lense that these arent real relationships that can cause these problems

    It really is nice to get a down-to-earth and blunt take to "parasocialism", especially since Asmongold is a content creator himself but doesn't seem too knowledgable about the context of the vtuber scene given the context. While I think all streamers have parasocial viewers to an extent, I think a lot of Vtubers do feed into this kind of relationship more so than in person streamers. Like, they refer to their fans with certain terms of endearment and often tell their viewers how much they care about them amongst other things. I'm not saying a streamer can't care about their audience but with Vtubers in particular there is a certain amount of closeness they seem to encourage when they should be drawing a line.

  • @Hobbnis

    @Hobbnis

    True that they should be drawing a line from a moral perspective, but for them and maybe even for a lot of their fans, it seems the parasocial relationship is good. Both for business and for their happiness. The fans want the affection and so do the streamers, along with money of course. A japanese vtuber literally used to go through a lot of her fans' Twitter accounts to see if they're watching other streamers. Honestly, I say let them be if both parties are consenting to that kind of thing.

  • @Rosso87

    Just to play devils advocate here, why should they be "drawing a line"? If both the streamer and the viewer are happy cultivating a parasocial relationship, and it's accepted on both sides, what's the problem?. It's a bit strange when its the viewers pushing the parasocial side and the streamer wants none of it, but if both sides agree then surely it's ok?

    Well, thing is, a lot of Vtuber's are extremely weird and have crippling social anxiety irl, hence the whole reason for them deciding to play a virtual persona instead of their actual human self on stream. So I think they can relate more to the fans of theirs who are awkward shut ins and get told constantly how they're just another number on a stream, and nothing more. Vtubers like Iron mouse for example, Ironmouse literally only gets social interaction from her fans and from streaming cuz she is disabled and has to stay inside all day. That's obviously not the case for all Vtuber's but the most successful ones are very introverted and honestly socially inept irl so they try to get the most meaningful interactions out of streaming that they can. They're willing to overlook the awkward horny nerds who are sometimes creeps and socially clueless weirdos who don't truly mean any harm cuz a lot of them are the exact same as their viewers.

    i think parasocialism is a big thing in Vtuber community, cuz a lot of the successful ones usually cultivate it in their community (with or without them knowing it). especially cuz vtuber present themselves in their avatar instead of their real self, which creates a situation where there are some leeway for the vtuber in the worst case scenario (tho doxxing is becoming quite common in the vtuber scene, which sucks) and the viewers can just view them as just "characters". tho i do think this problem can be mitigated by just making the viewers know about the boundaries between vtubers and the viewers.

    Streaming itself is a parasocial activity, where being in a parasocial relationship is "beneficial" to the streamer. People watch streamers, mostly, on their own, and streams go on for hours, multiple times per week.The viewer is mostly only thinking about themselves and the streamer talking. Despite not actually offering anything to the viewer outside of the entertainment value of watching them, some people feel the need to donate money in excess of what a "Thanks for the entertainment" deserves. Streamers play into the friendliness of interacting with the viewer, and whether or not they'd want to acknowledge, admit it, or even actively divulge in it. It still happens because of the very nature of what a stream is.

    You know we always hear about parasocial behavior as this negative thing, and often it is bad and gets in the way of real relationships. But in some cases, i know in my case, i watched streamers to get me through a really long, bad, lonely patch of life. I'm through it now and thriving in life, i know the live streams, parasocial phase i went through was the crutch i needed. It gave me the feeling of having friends when i didn't, which kept me from being depressed when overcoming a life long substance addiction and I got all my shit together. You know, many of the people who disdain anything that deviates from the classic recipe that involves "touching grass" never wanted your well-being to begin with. Usually, they expect you to abandon such "weird habits" and assimilate to a certain status quo that they themselves follow, or they expect you to simply be ashamed of your actions and simply disappear from the face of the earth for being "too cringey". It's during these situations that I can see value in those who admire solitude (which is different from being lonely): A lot of people out there don't care about helping you overcome their problems, but they want you to stop being an inconvenience, no matter how vain the reason is. So, for me it doesn't matter how someone is going to get out of the cycle of despair they find themselves in. If it's not self-destructive and doesn't hurt anyone, anything goes.

    Parasocial relationships for vtubers can be really bad and even for irl streamers but i don’t think it’s inherently bad. For the trash taste example, for people that watch them all the time you can’t help but feel like you know them and one of the boys but i think as long as you’re aware that’s not true. and know that they don’t know you and you know more about them but only what you see then it’s fine. It just happens if you watch someone all the time; even pewdiepie mentions how it felt like he knew Garnt and Connor before even meeting them. It can be unhealthy and you need to stay in reality. I think the problem with vtubers is the creeps take the idea of anime waifus and find a real person behind the png you can actually talk to. Plus the vtubers encourage it to a degree. And in Japan they treat vtubers like idols

  • @r.8902

    @r.8902

    Жыл бұрын

    Very true. I don't think it's inherently bad to have a parasocial relationship with an online personality, fictional character, etc and so forth. I'm sure everyone has had thoughts of what it would be like to be friends or in a relationship with said person, character, etc. On a psychological standpoint, it's totally normal to have those thoughts. Those characters or personalities mean something to you on an emotional and social level, and relatable and interesting characters are a writing tool to keep people engaged and invested. That latter statements spans to people who vlog or stream as well. There are streamers who I feel like I'd get along with in real life, but I'm not going to go bother them to figure that out lol Another note on parasocial relationships being fine is when you make friends online through social media platforms. Even though you may never meet them or see their face or talk to them with voice, that's still considered a PSR and there's nothing wrong with making a connection with someone you don't really know and you only interact through shared media and maybe some life updates from time to time. Like you said, the problem lies in the delusions. The belief that these personalities or characters ARE your friends or ARE your significant other. It's definitely some form of mental illness, and I don't mean that in a bad way or jabbing fingers. It's just losing touch with reality, and it seems like the younger generation (and I'm not that old) is having these problems more than any other age group. It should really be studied.

I can sort of understand in places like China where they have 100 million more men than women. Obviously they can't all have girlfriends. Cities with a lot of industrial / oil jobs tend to attract more men than women. So, out of 7 million, it's probably 3 million women, and 4 million men. Still most of these kids just need a job that keeps them busy and away from their computer. Forced real interaction is the best therapy.

Idk why streamers think this doesn't happen to anyone else. Most never had to work a day in their life so they don't know i guess.

    My justification for watching Twitch streams as much as I do is I don't know them, they don't know me but I'm into whatever they're doing despite who's doing it. I'm perfectly ok being labeled a loser for watching Zackrawrr or Nyanners spout off unhinged, incoherent takes at 2AM or Kripp playing his 100,000th game of Hearthstone Battlegrounds, and I'm not going to try to make up for it by acting like I have an actual relationship with these people as if I knew them or they knew me and I'm sorry but I'll also never drop a sub to any of them for that same reason lol. I would also NOT get their attention on the street if I saw them OR stalk them in any way whatsoever, and the fact that people have done that to any of them before is just naturally disgusting. IMO sub month and donation limits should be set so people are less encouraged to act out this completely psychotic behavior towards streamers and may actually put the rest of that money towards good use.

    vTubing is very similar to pro-wrestling: Everyone watching understands (or should) that it's just a bunch of people playing fictional characters for our entertainment, with a great deal of improvised character development woven into a long-term narrative that is collaboratively built with their fellow performers. However, with wrestling, it's easier to look at a pro wrestler and inherently understand that they are a real person with a real life once they leave the stage. With vTubers, and the whole aspect of the animated avatar and the culture of not unveiling the person behind the performance makes it harder to visualize the real human with a real life off-stage/screen. Thus, it's easier for watchers to slip into the deep end of thinking of them only as their character, and therefore not a person.

    I'll be honest, it might be my psych degree talking but I would have a very immediate and strict response to anyone displaying parasocial behaviour if I was a content creator. Like if someone donated money to send a message to me about their personal life situation and trauma or something similar I would probably respond with something like "Hey, thanks for the donation but that sounds like something you shouldn't really be telling me, I'm not your friend, your family or your therapist man, I urge you to go and get the help you need and I hope things improve but I will have to ban you if you dump any personal stuff like that on me again". It's unhealthy to encourage this type of thing in any way, I believe you should set firm boundaries to stamp this stuff out immediately as you aren't helping the person at all by ignoring or encouraging that type of thing (in fact if anything you're hurting them as you're just feeding their unhealthy dependence on you as a surrogate for whatever social or psychological hole they're trying to use you to fill).

    I wonder about the mental toll it must take as a Vtuber to be showered with love for your character and not for you yourself, or that you can be an idol because of your beautiful model, but may be ugly irl (I know some are attractive irl but that's besides the point). I don't think most of this is healthy at all UNLESS you accept you are a character and fans accept they're just fans. Also, even THEN it can still be seen as horrible because you are subjecting people that are prone to developing these parasocial relationships, the same way gambling subjects people to addiction that are prone to it. And that's regulated!

Since they basically function by predicting patterns in conversation, and trying to extrapolate what you want to hear, while being just vague enough for your imagination to fill in the empty spots of the uncanny valley. Best of all if someone tries to dox them, all they'll find is a server farm, and bank account. Anyone looking for some investment opportunities?

    I saw a clip once where someone donated to xQc saying something like “thank u so much Felix without you I wouldn’t be here due to depression/sui ideation” or something to that affect. xQc just very nonchalantly goes “hey man that’s weird I’m just a guy sitting playing video games” or something like that. It wasn’t a huge out down but it was straight and to the point. These people are just gamers trying to make a buck doing what they like. Yes they care that they have an audience, and are grateful, but they are absolutely not your dad/partner/family/therapist or even FRIEND. it IS abusive to say stuff like that. Imagine you’re playing video games for your job and some stranger says “thanks to you I did not kill myself today”. That’s putting an absolutely insane amount of pressure on someone who doesn’t even know who you are. It is not their responsibility to look after these people. And it’s true it’s not a new thing in entertainment or even streaming for that matter. Ice Poseidon being used as an example is great because his audience were fucking insane. RIP to the mental health of anyone who ever dated Paul during that time. The amount of digging around and abuse and threats directed to someone they thought might be his girlfriend and stuff, and Ice was definite parasocial too, he had multiple streams where he broke down crying because of how lonely he was before streaming and how good it is to have a family, and how when he has a “bad” stream he feels like he let so many people down like they’re is actual family.
