The Canon F4 zooms aren't too exciting, but they perform really well and feel built to travel. I'm back from New Zealand and we're taking a look at both the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens and Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. I've owned these lenses for years at this point, picking up the RF 24-105mm F4 with my RP in 2020, and the RF 70-200 F4 with my R6 in 2021. So far, they're still holding up great, and I have used each frequently, and for many trips and occasional freelance photography.
In this video, I took a small detour from my usual style. I, intentionally, have de-emphasized settings and focal ranges here. That's part of the point... when packing both, you're covered 24-200 at a constant F4, with a useful overlap at 70-105mm that prevents excessive lens swapping. Most shots are either at F4 or ~F8/F11. ISO ranges from 100 to ~3200. Maybe a few higher.
There are several GoPro HERO9 shots, and iPhone 14 Pro shots. Everything else in a white border, pics & vids, are from these lenses and the Canon R6. Many video clips have been shot in 60fps and slowed and/or have warp stabilizer applied in Premiere.

Thanks! It was my first shot at something like this, I have a great appreciation for those that make each and every vid like this. Are you looking at one of the zooms?

Controversial take: I feel like f2.8 zooms are only good for indoor events with some unpredictability. If you’re really are addicted to bokeh you’ll want a f2 or faster prime anyway. Of course landscapes very rarely need f2.8, imho, and if you do want to do shallow DoF landscapes you’ll, again, want something like f1.4 anyway!

I suppose that's why most with the 28-70 love it. On this trip, it might have been nice to have some F2.8 options for the astro stuff, but the RF 28mm and nifty fifty were helpful stand-ins. And can't beat the weight of the F4s!

Me too! The easiest way to support me is just by watching the ones that interest you, so thank you! If you know someone else who might appreciate them, sharing the channel is huge as well.

I just got a Canon t2i because my budget is about 6 pennies. I say "about" because i might be lucky and find another on the ground. I genuinely dont even know what half these buttons do. The previous owner really seasoned the strap well because it turned the water brown when i tried to wash it and i think thats where all the photo particles are so i think i ruined it. Sorry. edit: it really did turn it brown

Comment of the day, appreciate it! YT was testing it for "R8" at first but it looks like they're coming around to test it more for "24-105." It's always a little bit of a mystery haha just have to keep getting better.

Very "under-subscribed" channel! What are you filming yourself on? And do you have an opinion on 2.8 vs 4 for portraits on the 70-200? Portraits is the only thing where im not yet conviced i wont miss the f2.8.

Appreciate the comment, helps let me know I’m on the right track. Gut feel, what number would you have expected to see based on the content? Almost everything in the last 9 months my main a-roll is the R8. Especially the podcasts. R6 is my main photo body… and R8 was supposed to be a 6 month try and sell. But I got more photo work than I expected this year so I’ve kept it a bit longer. Next vid is mainly the R8 shots in NZ. I only had both together for a short time, but with the 70-200s, the distances between you, your subject, and your background (plus focal length) seem to be much more important for the look than the one stop. If you’re in tight spots and can’t control, maybe it helps a little. But I think the 2.8 is more useful for keeping the noise lower in dark environments and higher shutter speed shooting. For truly magical pop, 85 is something I look to for that.

@@DanYosua I honestly was surprised that you didnt have AT LEAST upwards of 50k followers like the other photography youtubers i watch. I'm serious. I've no doubt it'll happen. The R8 is my main (or only) camera and i love it for being everything i want - since i am not shooting professionally. And that is also the reason why i am so "critical" about the f4 version. Since i am just starting out i feel like i want to be able to shoot everything without spending toooo much money on it. I love zooming in on everything when i am outside, but i also love (the idea of) taking very pleasant portraits. All with the wish/hope of getting better and ultimately professional. And i also love the idea that i dont have to carry around more than 1-2 lenses. So a telezoom that can do portraits would be kind of the perfect lense for me. I have the RF 50 1.8 (it too cheap not to have it), the 35 1.8 (thats the focal length that works best in my home studio setup but i dont like the wide photos) and the 24-105 F 4-7.1, which is a good lense for what it is - but the aperture.. Anyhow compression is the one thing i love the most in photos, since it makes the photos more "dense" and impactfull. Hence my interest in the 70-200. Maybe my "problem" is that i want something above 85 especially for everything besides portaits, but i am also not willing to spend another 2-3k on a great 85mm. Maybe the 85 F2 + the 70-200 F4 would be exactly what i need. Well at this point i'm just rambling :D Thank you for your reply and also thank you for the great videos you made because not only are they actually entertaining but also insightful AND feel to be a little more like your actual opinion than some of the other videos out there. No need to get back on this! I think this is just something i have to consider myself in the end. But please keep it up!

P.S.: your way of talking is not only pleasant to listen to, but also makes me want to hear what's next. Which is making me watch your videos to the end. A very small "but": the sound is a little like scratchy compared to other youtubers. As in the mic or the processing isnt perfect with the s-sounds or the higher end. But this might just be me though!

Lol 50k, maybe if I ever manage more than one video a month 😅 Super helpful though, thanks for taking the time to expand! The "one lens" argument I do think is one of the stronger ones in favor of the f2.8 for people on the edge of enthusiast/part-time pro. If it really can do it all (most) for you then any weight and size hesitations start to fade away because it's the only thing in the bag. If you're able to spend a long weekend with one, you'll probably have a good idea either way. The audio feedback is good too, something I've wrestled with a bit. I need to practice more post and need to project more into the mic to begin with I think.

A recurrent and unsolvable dilemma. Size, weight and portability should be prioritize for the majority of photographers even though primes and f2.8 lenses are tempting.
