This type of game design is very common when it comes to Klei's other games and it really goes to show how good of a system it is In Don't Starve, your almost always in a state of Disequilibrium, with food being a constant, ever draining issue you have to constantly work to get, a great example would be wild carrots. During the early game they are incredibly valuable, as they restore 12.5 hunger each and are abundant, however they never return once picked when compared to other foods such as berries from berry bushes or monster meat from the ever re spawning spiders. Sanity effects the player's state in many negative ways yes, and also drains more than it is gained, however having low sanity means you have access to nightmare creatures, and therefore an extremely powerful resource. By having such a resource be locked behind a "negative" state, the game is ingeniously getting you used to negative conditions, so when your low on food or health, you panic far less, and *your gonna be low on at least something at all times* There are loads more examples but this comment is already really long so all i wanna say is, you should definitely (if you aren't already) check it out

If there's anyone in 2022 onward reading this here's a few tips. Find Water early and make a pit for it, if there's a lot make that your central tank if not move it later to a better spot. The MicroMusher is a trap. Do not use unless absolutely necessary. Get into farming quickly, and hire dupes solely based on how fast you can expand your food production. When laying out the distance between room and the ladder systems, leave 3 tile gaps. The ladder takes the central position and Firepole can take either side after. The third travel system is farther down and expensive but will use the remaining empty space. Always use a Smart Battery. It limits wastage from generators and allows you to shut them off whenever you don't need power. The better you understand the systems the faster you can reach equilibrium in your base. It may take thousands of cycles but it will be done. And lastly never stop expanding. Use airlocks to prevent oxygen leaks into undeveloped territory. Plant flowers to limit airborne germ spread. But otherwise excavate everything you do not plan to use. Hollow out the map and put everything in a central storage, do that overtime as you will exhaust your Dupes quickly.

Having the ability to layer things on top of things also looks really cool when u have a mega base with pipes power lines automation lines ladders transit tubes fire poles very aesthetically pleasing and it makes you feel like you're growing from just dirt to a point where you can make dupes have a hotel life style

I've been in love with this game for months now but I never really knew why. Now after watching this I can really appreciate how they strung all the different mechanics and systems together to make a great game. Props to Klei for making such a fun game and you for making an excellent video on it =)

This is a really cool, interesting video. I haven't played Oxygen Not Included (and probably won't end up getting it, tbh) because it pushes a very specific anxiety I have with these base-building games: disequilibrium and finite resources. I've been on a massive Factorio binge but keep starting new maps every time I get through some amount of progress. I think I've always had a vague idea that this kind of disequilibrium aspect--scaling up production creates more pollution, pollution strengthens enemy alien threat, you need to scale up production to better defend yourself, etc, all the while you're forced to expand to avoid running out of resources--was a pretty big turnoff for me in games. I was never really able to word it concisely, though. You definitely deserve way more subscribers, dude, this kind of quality isn't at all what I've come to expect from a 4-digit sub count channel.

Every essential resource is entirely reneweable in ONI; water geysers give you oxygen (and hydrogen to burn to power things), metal volcanos give you an endless supply of refined metals, oil fissures can be provided with water to extract crude oil, and regolith, a filtration medium, rains from the sky onto the top of the asteroid. In the Spaced Out DLC version, all the major materials are still renewable, just not all on the same planetoid, so you need to start shipping things between your planetoids. However, there are also asteroid clouds you can mine for building materials and things which renew slowly but forever. Late in the game, heat management starts to become a bigger problem than resource limitations.

What I love about ONI is that its unforgiving of mistakes, but (mostly) not cruel. When I define a game as unforgiving, I mean it wont provide an easy escape with minimal repercussions after a mistake. COD Warzone is not unforgiving because you lose virtually nothing other than 15 minutes or so upon death. Minecraft is unforgiving because death means lost equipment as well as time. Oxygen Not Included is unforgiving because a death of a colony or even a single duplicant could mean hours or days of work. When I define a game as cruel, I mean that random events can result in loss of progress and you have little to no control over it. Escape from Tarkov is a cruel game because any shotgun pellet from 100 meters away can strike an eyeball and kill you and you cant change the outcome without spending a large amount of in game money or time getting access to a face shield. Oxygen Not Included is not a cruel game because nearly every single piece of your colony is controllable to some extent. The only part of a colony that isn't is what kind of geysers you get but for the most part you can survive for hundreds of cycles even with pretty bad geyser layouts

8:32 Rewhat? Colonizing everything, extractiong every singlt resource out of all afeast, use of inefficient and dirty machinery to keep everything running, mass pollution of lower layers of your base coz any recicling is too expensive to build. Best real world simulation! but yeah, u right here. And another thing - later in the game u will face shit that caused by your early decisions, like overflow of CO2 or crappy water, and that's interesting too. Sad thing about this game is that i can't play it. I bought it in early access and returned to it at some points, but they just added so much stuff, it would be really difficult to re-learn how to play this game, coz i already build a successful-ish colony in the past (before microbes were added tho)

Na, it's pretty easy to get stable...once you know what you're doing anyway. I had like 5 things that almost killed my base. I'm at cycle 811 and have ALL of them fixed finally. I probably only need about another 10 to make my base self sustaining. Really probably just make my fertilizer set up turn on and off automatically somehow and I'm done. Granted, there is a small chance that my base cooling water system MIGHT eventually get to cold and freeze my dupes and crops out. Also, that I might not be making enough non-food poisoned water from my Natural gas generators but I doubt it.
