He liked it so much that in Boruto he even decided to go more androgynous to look like her. But seriously, Orochimaru in Part 1 only lives in a woman's body, there's Shiore, there's the unknown ninja he was using as a body and that we saw in the fight against Hiruzen, and in Boruto he got more androgynous. I personally always found Orochimaru as a female to be the most terrifying version of the character, I don't know why. Him as Shiore in the Forest of Death is the most terrifying version of the character for me, the version of him with the original body just doesn't have the same impact, secondly there's the female version of him fighting Hiruzen, which is the body of some Kunoichi he used as a vessel for his soul. The voice of the female versions are creepy. And every time I see him swallowing and spitting things out of his mouth I laugh because I think it's funny, but the female versions for some reason make everything seem more terrifying, him swallowing that scroll in the Forest of Death terrified me as a child, and for for some reason I tried to imitate later I don't know why. The laugh of the female version of him in the fight against Hiruzen for me is one of my favorite moments in the series. Maybe it's not just me, I mean, every time Kishimoto wants to turn Orochimaru into something out of a horror movie he turns him into a woman: First there's the Forest of Death, and in the fight against Hiruzen he uses Orochimaru turning into a woman to show how sick/evil/scary he is. And there's Boruto where he became a single mother. But I don't want to talk about Boruto.

Kishimoto probably does that to emphasize that Orochimaru is so inhuman at that point that simple biological classifications cannot even be applied to him anymore. Not to mention, the fact that he seems to only steal the bodies of women and teenage boys reminds us of predators of another sort and makes him look even more evil.

@@Oblivion___ Yeah, Orochimaru's female versions definitely bring a different kind of terror and impact to the character. It's interesting how Kishimoto uses these transformations to create a sense of horror. And yeah, Boruto has its own unique twists and turns.

I love the idea that Orochimaru killed Shiore because of her choice in fashion. Orochimaru walking up to Shiore wearing her exact same outfit: "Well... one of us is going to have to change."

When I first saw Sasuke in the same cloth, especially when we were anticipating the body transfer time coming close, I thought that the robes are for the new vessels, or at least for the candidates. So I assumed that the dead girl was a candidate for a vessel. He discarded her. This does not explain why nobody questioned why she had the robe, but I can assume nobody really knew what it meant and symbolized at the time

Well we know Orochimaru has spies in other villages, for example Kabuto pretending to be a leaf ninja for most of his life so this makes alot of sense. Once people serve their purpose he tosses them aside like trash.

I remember as a kid watching Anko and the Anbu's discovering this squad's bodies. It was bone chilling. Orochimaru was a terrifying dude when he was first introduced.

why are you assuming that he took her look? the pants and shoes that he wears are different to the ones that she wore. It makes more sense that they had the same shirt because she was one of his underlings.

I think Shioris outfit was actually originally Orochimarus. Shiori and her team were not real grass ninjas. They were more of Orochimarus henchmen that just killed 3 grass ninja for their headbands and Orochimaru needed them to get past Konohas security barrier. He can travel through curse marks so once in Orochimaru portaled out of Shioris curse mark and killed her along with the other two members and took over from there with two of the sound four disguised as her team members.

What if Orochimaru never stole from Shiore? He just saw her, saw they were matching and got jealous cause she wore it better and killed her? Also she is from the hidden grass village which is one of the location where his hidden village is, so maybe he wears their standard attire to blend in?

What if Shione and her team used to be allifiated with Orochimaru, but eventually left for whatever reason, and then when Orochimaru showed up at the chunnin exams and saw her, he killed her to either exact revenge or to keep any secrets she may have known

If they left Orochimaru then they would also ditch the clothing for something else. Most likely they were still part of Orochimaru's group and he merely killed them as he did with several of his own followers.

He liked her style and made it his indefinitely. I would too tbh. But I forgot I learned about Orochimaru’s association with the hidden grass village while associating the hidden sound village and by that time he had already left the leaf.

You forgot his outfit from Anko's flashback. There was 1 frame where he was wearing white kimono with red snakes and 2 swords

Considering the sound 5 and sasuke after the time skip have similar clothing, it should be implied this clothing style was already his. This is why this is the funniest plot hole in the series.

Actually, they don't wear the exact same clothes. If you take very attention to the detals through the series, you will see that the pants and shoes Orochimaru wears are different to the ones Shiore does. Orochimaru wears some kind of jeans and brown sandails while Shiore wears pants on the same color of the area around the neck, making it look like a jumpsuit, that connects with the shoes.

My favourite Orochimaru's costume was his Hidden Sound shinobi outfit. I wished he'd wear it on his fight with Hiruzen.

Orochimaru is a Sannin, a well known ninja throughout the land. Its quite possible that his drip is also well known and adopted by cringy edgelords in universe, much like cringy edgelords in our universe like wearing n@z1 alluding paraphernalia, or wannabe thugs rockin the pooh shiesty ski cap. The chick from Grass probably wore it to shock, showing up to konoha in the drip made famous by one of its biggest defectors. Orochimaru sees this and takes it as a bit of serendipity, and that swayed his decision to target her team for elimination to be used as a means of infiltration. In short, orochimaru is an in universe fashion icon, and o girl just got caught up in some shit by wearing the wrong colors in the wrong hood

To explain away the inconsistencies, you could just say she was an undercover Sound Ninja that was sent as reconnaissance for Orochimaru in the Hidden Grass, but she outlived her usefulness. The similarity in why Orochimaru would allow a henchman the same clothing as him could just be that she was very close to Orochimaru's body type. Obviously, none of this is accurate, and it's just that his design became iconic, but I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned once as a fan theory. Haha.

His outfit wasn't iconic by the time he fights Hiruzen. You can excuse it away that he only had the disguise and the jonin outfit for the infiltration, but after that there isn't a reason. It could've been an editor decision to leave his outfit the way it is for character recognizability.

@@sor3999 her and Orochimaru are wearing different shoes and pants. They're not wearing the exact same clothes. And there is a reason as to why he has the outfit throughout the series. It's because it's his outfit, the fact that the sound ninja 5 have similar outfits confirms this.

Shimenawa is the name of the style of that purple "belt". It's supposed to separate the space between the normal space for us mortals and the space that belongs to the gods. If I had to guess the symbolism, it's a reflection of Orochimaru's attempt to reach a god-like status by mastering all of the jutsu in the ninja world (why he was obsessed over the Sharingan). He being wrapped by the belt means he is in space meant for the gods while those outside it are just mere mortals. Again, just taking a stab in the dark with this one.

he just needed one more outfit though that is not shioris. and he got multiple outfits anyways. so the reason is probably NOT that he didn't want to draw lots of outfits, but rather that this specific outfit just worked the best and that's why he kept it (like explained in the video)

Oh yeah, I forgot they found the body of the grass ninja girl... I legitimately thought that there was no grass ninja team at all and it was just Orochimaru disguided from the start. Yeah, that kinda gives me the impression he just liked the outfit and kept it lul. Also, yes, the flashback is probably just a mistake that wasn't noticed by the editors.

Maybe the belt and the rest of the seemingly light outfit serves a practical purpose as a ninja. But the belt... i still remember when i was a teen watching the fight between sasuke and de 4 of the sound when sasuke grabs a couple of them by the purple belt to toss them away to supposedly defeating them. At that point i was always concerned about the real function of that big clumsy stiff belt (which is stylish and iconic though) and that scene un-confirmed my point: its useless haha. Gr8 vid ❤

It was Kabuto's flashback, so chances still stands that we could argue thats just how Kabuto remembered Orochimaru in that moment.

I actually think it's VERY in character for Orochimaru to just take things from other people and incoprorate them into himself. That IS what he wants to do to Sasuke, after all. Having said that. I also like to imagine this as another instance of what Ban does a few times in Seven Deadly Sins. His trademark leather jacket and pants get all cut up and he's walking around shirtless, and then he randomly finds someone wearing the same drip and just mugs them then and there to replace it. It's a great running gag there, and I think it would be hilarious if Orochimaru did the same thing.

You can explain away Kabuto's memory having Orochimaru in the Forest of Death attire by saying Kabuto spent so long seeing Orochimaru in his iconic outfit that he no longer remembers what he used to wear from before.

I always assumed Orochimaru kinda clothed Shiore into his own outfit after killing her, because he knew Anko wound found her body just to absolutely frick her out? I mean I believe we don't see Shiore before assassination in this outfit (or do we, actually we could have?). And it just makes absolutely perfect sense for someone as maniacal and sadistic to do such a thing, Anko would immediately know the clothes and the body as she sees the corpse, remembering how close she was to Orochimaru when he returned her kunai; the corpse being in the same clothes just would make the scene so much frightening and absurd. seems like very orochimaru thing to do idk

I think it was simply a comfort choice. Remember, Orochimaru was body swapped into a female body at that point. He may have had a female anatomy at that time, realized that the girl's outfit felt better for his female form at that time, and decided to just keep the outfit for a while. As for the other times after switching to a male body, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe he simply liked the drip?

I remember having the biggest mandela effect when I rewatched Naruto for the first time because when I saw it on cable as a kid I recalled Orochimaru wearing a black armor resembeling the one Hashirama and Tobirama were using during the invasion, it was really weird seeing him with his forest outfit

I'm pretty sure Orochimaru came dressed as the same outfit of that girl and he was like "Well *someone* is going to have to change" and since Shiori didn't want to change, what else was he supposed to do but kill her and assume her identity. SHE was the one who copied his drip, not the other way around. Just because she showed up first doesn't mean she wore it first!

Considering how many spies and sleeper agents Orochimaru has all over the place, it wouldn't be a surprise if Shiore was one of them, thus explaining why her outfit resembled Orochimaru's. There is no canon or non-canon info to confirm this though.

I really enjoyed your comical analysis of when and why he chose it. It really is a funny situation that I hadn't considered. All in all I agree with you, I like him best in the cloak. More sinister and all that. Though I think it would look best with something red underneath.

She was probably just another ninja he had planted in the village hidden in the grass. Her purpose, get into the exams so he could take her place. She took his style, not the other way around.

The talismans hanging from their strawhats says they’re evil so they could’ve associated with Orochimaru or the grass village have ninja just as evil as they do in the sound village

Idk maybe he just really liked the outfit and decided to stick with it? Out of universal I assume that the creator either liked the design or found it so recognisable with Orochinaru that he decided not to change it unless it made sense in the story. In universe though maybe he just really liked those clothes and decided to make it his main look, he may be an evil sociopath but even he has standards when it comes to his fashion.

I like how this pops up in my recommended after this question came across my mind while watching the chunin exams arc.

He had hideouts all over. Since he was coming from the grass, it'd make sense to already be dressed to fit in where he probably grew attached to the style. I also wouldn't have put it against him to use other villages like the sand, meaning the grass could have also been allies with the sound, but not necessarily the sand too. All a means to an end for his goal. His allies didn't have to get along. Actually, that'd be detrimental to him in the long run if they had. I mean it's not cannon or anything but it'd make sense.

I wonder who were those two other ninjas, who infiltrated the forest with Orochimaru? I don't remember that they appeared ever again after they went into the forest.

In which case, if @@fhlo2000 is right, Kimimaro likely got sick at this moment and had to be taken out... as to who is the second most likely candidate... maybe either Kidomaro (I don't know if I spelled spider guy right) or one of the twins... Sakon or Ukon. (since they were the leader after Kimi got sick so he could make sense, you know)

@@orianefaton1885 Kimimaro got sick when Orochimaru murdered the 4th Kazekage, more than a month after the Forest of Death incident. Still, one of them could be him. On the other hand, I just remembered now that two similar looking "grass ninja" got killed by Gaara in the forest. If they were the same two, who infiltrated the forest with Orochimaru, I wonder why Orochimaru ordered them to attack Gaara. He should've known better that a jinchuriki is more than a match for two (maybe around chunin level) sound nin.

Only 3 people in the akatsuki can beat orochimaru. Obito, pain and itachi. Kisame and kakuzu would give him a high diff fight but would still lose to him. Sasori, deidara and konan would give him mid diff. Hidan and zetsu get rekt.

I remembered this overlooked fact the first time I watched it. I also considered the reason for it back when I made my OC fanfic for Naruto in which the Hidden Grass Village had a more prominent role in the series. I explained it away as the female ninja and her two teammates as being spies for Orochimaru in the Hidden Grass, which is why they wore his trademark clothing. Easy.

Clothes are one thing that I have an issue with in Naruto unlike One Piece or bleach where characters change outfit every arc Kishimoto never does that which is ok but also makes his characters seem either hobos who only wear one dress or wierdos who have 12 sets of the same dress. Sasuke is like the one exception to this and changes fits frequently.

Orochimaru, probably decided to impersonate those ninja way before the chunnin exams even began, so he put her in a genjutsu so she would get "new clothes", and that's how orochimaru made the person he intended to replace wear his comfy outfit.

Here is a thought. The sound village is in the Land of Grass, so maybe Orochimaru adopted the fashion of the Land of Grass when he left the leaf and set up the village..? There is your very blatant in universe reason.

When orochimaru fights Hiruzen, the outfit actually makes sense. He changes his face into a women to creep out Hiruzen was probably Shiori's face. We know that the soul is still intact in the body so canocically it would make sense as it puts her soul slightly at ease. After he loses the body however.... he just wearing that for purely for drip atp.

Considering ninjas from different villages tend to dress similarly, Orochimaru probably came across grass ninja in past and liked their aesthetic enough to adopt it for himself and his henchmen.

I feel it’s similar to Edward Kenway taking Duncan Wolphols outfit after he killed him. And he loved the outfit

I think Orochimaru hired Shiore and told her to wear those clothes and go to the Leaf village during the exam and then kill her and disguise himself as her.

Funny that you didn't think of another "in-universe" explanation that would probably make more sense (though it's obviously an oversight from Kishimoto). What if Shiore and her guys simply were spies Orochimaru sent to another village. They'd do some work for him and were told to attend the chuunin exam. Orochimaru would then find them and steal Shiore's face, not having any regards for her life. The sound village was quite young and odds are that basically nobody knew of their signature outfits, so they would have kept their usual outfit.

But Shiore's dead body wasn't naked after orochimaru steal her face. They just had the same clothes since before. Maybe it was a very common outfit in the grass village, and Orochimaru stole it from some grass ninja he fought, some time between leaving the leaf village and the chunnin exams.

When Orochimaru removes his face in the fight with the 3rd hokage and it wasnt the girl from the grass village is when i think i realize he probably had that outfit before the series started. Its probably just regional dress since other people have similar belts, etc. like you pointed out.

I think that the weird belt is a shimewana. it was used to seal sun goddess Amaterasu in a cave, after a fight with Susanoo. An alternative origin story from the Izumo region involves the kami Susanoo instructing people to string ropes along roads to ward off disease. This tale provides another possible explanation for the development of shimenawa as boundaries between the sacred and profane realms.

The Shirt and Belt are the same but the Pants in the Battle with Hiruzen are different from Shiore's pants.

A very plausible explanation could be that Shiori was Orochimarus servant all along. After all he is used to kill his underlings and also used to place them as spies for years before he uses them.

I always thought that he kills her first then put on his outfit and then infiltrate, but maybe she was either one of his lackeys undercover or he use a genjutsu or something for her to look like him so it would be less suspicious when he replaces her.
