Something i have learned over the years is every camera has its own very unique picture style and it all these different image sensors are really the electronic version of different film emulsions. No matter how many cameras i have been using since 1997 (and all these different formats) everything really changes when you use a certain camera for a certain look and feel. And no matter how much resolution options we have nowdays, including better dynamic range, there's something really fuzzy and familiar about shooting in lowrez DV or analog formats. The DVX100 is still one of my absolute most favorite Videocameras ever because it always gave me exactly what i wanted. A camera that lets me adjust image settings and make my recordings look like 16mm footage while also being flexible enough to let me shoot stuff that looks like video and it doesn't even need to be HD. Also, They used Video8 for the Videoscenes of "The Blair Witch Project", not VHS.

If you shoot anything at 4K and add some grain it will look like 16 mm film footage. If you scan the 16mm film properly with high end scanners, you might not even tell the difference between that and digital video.

@@fungo6631 Well it depends. Digital Video footage (even at 4K) mostly looks like video because of the electronic shutter, compared to the mechanical shutter-blade of a filmcamera. This is mostly what makes Video footage stand out the most. Filter wise however you even have the chance to add that sweet glowing Halation effection of Film which is really working amazingly well to create the illusion.

@KRAFTWERK2K6 ya film look is hard to achieve and I agree. Faking film I wouldn’t even recommend it. When I mentioned shooting 8mm film it was shooting 8mm film proper, not trying to replicate the look. We’ve done it for a number of productions, world war 2 docs and true crime series that took place in the 70’s. Shoot super 8mm film stock, and develop using similar techniques of the time to get as close to that look as possible. Same thing with the 90’s series I worked on and am working on season 3. Shooting mini dv and beta formats to match the time archive footage

I learned a lot from this video! And I think you're right; I see kids on tiktok in high school now doing vintage vlogs with their parents' old Sony HDR-CX130 Handycam from 2011. I laughed at first but after watching the footage, I get it. The soft low bitrate digital look is nostalgic to gen z. I filmed my 4 years of college on a dozen VHS tapes a couple years ago and I found that watching them doesn't invoke that nostalgic feeling because VHS was not the standard in 2018. Instead, that nostalgic feeling came from the snapchat memories and videos on my phone. It was a eureka moment for me that if you really want your own memories to feel nostalgic, you can't fake it. Use the technology of whatever era you're in, and the passage of time will do the rest

That's not a merit of the film format though. 8mm film look depends A LOT on how you scan it. If you scan it with modern film scanners and it's in good shape, with some grain filtering it will look like something filmed with a modern camera. For that old look, you need to scan it with some vidicon camera tube, like it was done back in the day.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    7 ай бұрын

@fungo6631 ya that’s true. They’re still scanning it with higher resolution stuff I imagine, unless they have those tube scanners still available. I don’t see a problem scanning higher resolution the older formats, getting the most out of the film stock resolution isn’t in anyway drastic way taking away from the authenticity of the time. If anything it pays tribute to his hood 8mm film stock was, but yes developing was also a big deal. Most home videos were just mass developed , when we shoot 8mm for modern productions we have a lot of room to push in the film development process depending what we are going for.

I love the older video cameras. I especially love the video cameras that used vidicon tubes for imaging, such as the Ikegami ITC-730A as mentioned in your video. I have an Ikegami HL-95B from 1986 which uses Plumbicon tubes, and a Sony DXC-M3A which uses Saticon tubes. Both cameras are professional and use the three sensor design. Also would like to mention that Saticon and Plumbicon tubes are both based off of the vidicon tube, just improved. These cameras give you the effect of being a news cameraman and capturing historical events. Like for example, the RCA TK-76 camera captured the attempted assassation of Ronald Reagan in 1981 and other important events. I also have a number of consumer video cameras from the time such a Panasonic Newvicon tube camera (which I did a review of on my channel), and a few Sony ones. The consumer cameras that used vidicon tubes, like my Panasonic PK-959, really give you the effect that you are in the 1980s watching someone's home video. It really does. If you're curious, I actually shot my most recent video where I check out a Betamax VCR completely on MiniDV tape, using my Sony DSR-PD150 which I recently bought. It's similar to the Panasonic AG-DVX100A. I shot the video on MiniDV tape, transferred it into to my computer, upscaled it to 1080p, edited it using Adobe Premiere, and uploaded it!

Long story short, trying to hook up obsolete wires to a 2020 Mac was a pain... the high-8 wouldn't capture and the super-8 footage was damaged (6 rolls!!!). The DV worked, thank god. We ended up taking the 4k camera and recording the playback on the hi-8 screen and using the super 8 test we shot prior for all the film burns and fast motions. The transfer process, the best part about it was being forced to watch the footage as it captured. I always captured in 10 min intervals. As it ingested I would be watching the footage, absorbing it and even being able to put additional notes as they came in. Broken time codes are annoying, but if i was shooting it never happened. Now it's just dump everything walk away make coffee and come back and screen in the edit which, always feels like a bit of a waste. @@MarkHoltze I completely agree, logging footage throughout the various projects I’ve worked on has been a lesson in organizational skills, attention to detail and most of all patience. Reviewing footage as if it would be transferred is something I still do even when working with data dumps, having a look at all the footage before actually transferring to the editing environment allows for better media management. Identify what works and not before the data dump has saved me a lot of time on the editing process. Now one thing I worry about is that my only machine that still has a firewire connector is getting old and that IIEE port on the dvx is temperamental on other machines. What would be your opinion on a Panasonic AG-AF100? It's a micro 4/3" camera from 2010 that records in 1080p. I got one for a good deal from a friend in Sweden ($250 including shipping) and I'm wondering if holds up well. I bought a lens adapter that will let me mount a 2/3" B4 lens (for ENG), but I might buy a normal 4/3" lens in the future. Since I already have two B4 lenses and they aren't being used I decided to pair them with my new AF100. I plan on using an external Rode NTG1 XLR microphone. The camera is coming tomorrow. The XLR inputs and raw SDI output seem like great features. I'm wondering if it looks better to capture raw 1080p SDI from the camera and upscale it to 4K.

I have a clear to click device (i made a video about it) that works really well for the analogue stuff. For mini DV I have some adapters (also made a video about it) firewire to thunderbolt and am able to capture video through quicktime as it recognizes (through the adapters) the DVX 100 and XL1. I was looking into third party software since Premiere and Resolve don't give me the ability any longer. I do have an old Mac G5 tower with FCP 7 if I need to log and capture batch stuff. I'll have to convert all those files to pro res though as the latest capture codec isn't recognized on modern machines. It's a pain in the ass for sure, but the clear to click device works nicely, records directly to SD card, don't need a computer. It de-interlaces for you, you can't change teh capture settings, but captures at the default frame rate and resolution. It's fairly inexpensive (although more than the amazon adapters) and has worked well the last 2 years.

Hi Mark, Minor correction as you misspelled and mispronounced "Ikegami" (correct spelling for the Japanese camera manufacturer of the ITC 730A . All Ikegami cameras displayed the spelling of "Ikegami" either on the front of the viewfinder or camera side panel(s). Throughout Ikegami's history beginning in the 1960's their cameras were one of the leading broadcast cameras used by many television networks, mobile truck facilities, studios , Mega Churches, and independent DPs etc. Countless high profile events such as the Olympics were photographed with Ikegami cameras. Ikegami tube and CCD cameras were highly sought after due to their distinctive color and skin tone reproduction as many late night talk and news programs used Ikegami exclusively. Myself having worked for many years with Ikegami CCD cameras I was able to create a "Filmic" look via the internal camera menus which allowed detailed "painting and look creation". The higher end Ikegami camera models used the prefix "HL" in the name which refers to "Handy Looky". The ITC series were the industrial lower cost models. In the 1980's Ikegami received an Emmy for the first Electronic Cinema Camera the EC-35. Ikegami cameras are still in use today as the company has a strong base in broadcast , sports, medical, live events, etc productions as well as offering HD, 4K and 8K cameras. For those who wish to learn more about the history of Ikegami cameras visit this webpage : www.ikegami.com/story-of-ikegami-usa Take care and remember "Old School is the New School". James

The way those cameras light trail on bright sources is also very cool, i was looking on ebay for the production models the show used but nothing came up, they might have got them all lol. Used half of them for parts and had to baby them, very interesting story there. It's a great way to bring back the past in a visual sense and the authenticity. I loved that the Lakers production discovered through experimentation that they could use these cameras for more than just the gameplay stuff. That it worked very well in emotional scenes as well. Check out the series if you can, you'll spot 100% of the shots and it's fantastic.

@@MarkHoltze T The HL 79A to HL79EAL and older cameras were the tube versions which had the distinct light trail. Those were the first Ikegami's models I got my hand on back in the day. Some trivia for those who recall combining a handheld Ikegami camera (HL-95,55,57,59 etc) with the dockable Sony Betacam SP VTRs (BVV1 or BVV5). Such a marriage between the two brands was called an "IkeOny" . Sony called their two piece dockable camera vtr combinations 507,570,590 etc which referred to "5" the onboard recorder and 07 or 70 etc to the camera model. In any case the two piece dockable camcorder was a heavy combination (for that time period) weighing in at 25-35 lbs with the large 5 lb Anton Bauer battery brick on the back. The introduction of one piece camcorders such as the Sony BVW 200,300,400,600 and Ikegami HL V55,59 were about 5 to 10 lbs lighter with a smaller profile which made them the ideal choice for "Run and Gun" ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and EFP (Electronic Field Production) crews. The CBS news magazine show 48 HRS and FOX TV "Cops" programs would not have been easily possible had it not been for the single piece camcorders which allowed multiple crews to rapidly embed themselves into a breaking story. Such crews were the innovators of transmitting the audio wirelessly from the soundperson to wireless audio receiver(s) on the camcorder. Prior to that an umbilical audio cable connected the camera and sound person which was awkward to work with at times. The 1990 to Mid 2000's ENG style camcorders were the ideal handheld form factor for news and documentary genre productions compared to the new age "Frankenrig" digital cinema camera rigs. "Legacy camera gear never truly goes away as it will eventually be rediscovered by the next generation of aspiring filmmakers. " I will check out the Lakers series. Keep up the great work on your channel. James

ya it's weird that's the ratio it was captured in, i just sized everything up to fit the 4k timeline. Film was always the goal back in the day, video sucked but I spent a LOT of time shooting video as a way to train for film. Basic composition rules still apply, but obviously exposure and workflow are VERY different. I do now reflect back on those days with fond memories and now we're 20+ years out from 2000, that format is starting to come around again because it signifies an era. I dont think anybody wants to go back to using tapes as capturing/shooting with them is a pain, but digital cinema never truly killed film as more filmmakers are going back to the medium than ever now to represent their stories. Video is having a similar (although to less extent) revolution.

Here's one thing about super 8 mm film that you might not like. You have to use contemporary scanning equipment as well for that retro look, as if you use modern 6.5k resolution film scanners it will look like it was filmed with modern equipment, minus the film grain. With 16 mm film it looks even higher definition and it can easily match 4K quality with low enough ISO film. But if you use some tube based scanner, it will look lower definition and more retro.

Having used all those old formats they do produce a type of emotional feel that takes you back. However, it's also annoying that normal consumers never had decent recording means until we finally got S-VHS and Hi-8. VHS was a low res bleeding horrible format to have your priceless memories on but that is what we had. And before that it was Super-8 which was short and normally without audio. We finally got mini-DV and D-8 in the late 90s which was significantly better but still only 480i. Then we finally got 24p and 30p but still in 480. Then came HD so high res images could be captured and now UHD. How great it would have been to have these decades ago. Today we take for granted how easy it is to have a quality digital video camera - in our pocket no less - to capture lots of pics and video with no developing or playback deck needed.

@@MarkHoltze Oh yes I remember. ZOOM range was a big push and worthless due to being digital as you said. The later VHS cams actually had good low light ratings (1 lux, 2 lux) but the higher res Hi-8 cams were worse. HDV was a pain but at least was "better" than what we had before. I never liked min-dv much either. I wished they had used a larger tape like 8mm. Common people couldn't afford to shoot movies on 16 or 35mm film so we had to use what was available. I don't miss the analog aquisition or flying erase head linear post days. The world was better then but the equipment wasn't. File based aquisition in 4K is nice.

Vintage cant be assoiciated to digital era recordings using CCD or CMOS sensors, have been using an HVR-Z5e as a webcam for years now the HDV/DVCam era was a bridge period for those who were lacking in the funds to shoot 35mm or 16mm, though some people never left VHS like my grandfather and after capturing raw RF off the tapes and using VHS-Decode / HiFi decode analouge has a wonderful lacking of resolving power you can make out only so much of what fills a frame I think thats why the VHS look is not abbriations or tape errors but the horror of not making out the monster in the distance. One funny thing about analouge though compared to digital you have clean recorded to tape i.e via duplicator or camcorder and recorded on tape via composite etc inputs to a recorder there is a very big diffrance in the clairy of signal in both RF terms and visual once viewed on today displays an CRT not so much though. Side note edit: 8-35mm is really sharp if you have a good focus puller, the lacking look is mostly incorrect scanning normally 2:1 of the grain and R/G/B stacked per frame is the standard but some people run these though cheeper scanners that really do not do the filmstocks of the film era or the modern film era justice.

There's nothing wrong with the older formats, they are mainly just a lot more difficult to work with. The vintage video term is a wide net and most use it outside the 'technical' definition. I'm using it in a casual sense here where any tape format being "obsolete now" as being "vintage". Film is quite sharp and it's assumed anything put to print has been correctly focused. 35 mm especially because it's still used in films and has a wonderful texture that works well with cinema. 8mm can be scanned and uploaded, but smaller area compromises the "image quality" to some extent. Again most people who scan film can't justify the cost of expensive scanners. We won't have anything we shoot on 8mm film for broadcast/film outside of a very specific set of film transfer houses. Still the 8mm film image will looking nothing like a 35mm film image and that's okay, they each have their purpose and it's definitely not all about resolution or image clarity. Great comment though mate, thanks for stopping by!

Most people haven't even seen TRUE HD (uncompressed) on their sets. There is a big topic behind this, but the push for 4k wasn't about the quality of the shows, everything is so compressed the 4k and even a lot of the HD stuff is lost.

The sad story of film making, particularly coming out of Hollywood, is that the packaging is fantastic but the content is woeful.

There are some gems but it’s far and few between. Maybe just too many films coming out now? It’s not really a risk taker, never has been with the exception of a few rogues who dared to try something new and had the credentials to let those decisions be per the studio. Things are becoming too heavily relied on VFX which is straining the industry and nothing wrong with them, but strong human stories without all the Big Bang might be nice once and awhile.

I watched Blair Witch on the movie theatre at the time and I didn't liked it. To much forced footage. And over acting and over everything. When they filmed that I already have years of experience with analogue video and filming stuff and experimenting so that style wasn't nothing new to me and I went out of the movie thinking: What did I come here to do? Wasted time and money. Many years later I had the same feeling when I went to the movies to see Disney's Star Wars The Force Awakens.

Yup, I can relate. I was 19 Blair witch and just liked how it felt like something I could do at the time. It’s success is undeniable whether we liked it or not. Force Awakens is a completely different beast but I can’t help but feel that whole series missed the mark. I’m not a kid and understand it would never be able to hit as strong as the OT did.

I realized that after I studied this clip, DVX100a is used quite a lot in that show, along with XL1 and the 150 and all those cameras i've used a lot as well. I was going to put in an annotation when i was editing it but i figured no one would be around to see it and also a personal test to see who would catch it and say something. You're the second so far, so good job! It's still the "jackass camera" because it was used, it just wasn't the one that got wrecked, but it most likely at the very least got vomited on! Thanks for your eyes mate, BOOM!
