Hello how are you ? I need help with a rear shock absorber on a 2014 KLR650, I am in the middle of Venezuela and no one makes repairs on these parts in this country. Could you help me repair it? Greetings

G’day from down under. Really enjoying your videos and no BS style. I have a question that hopefully you can cover in a future video. For a given application, what is considered to be “correct” damping and therefore what is under and over damping? Thanks 👍 Regards, Don

Hi Don I don't really know exactly. First make sure your damping is linear. Second know your motion ratios. Some bikes have very high leverages where the shock doesn't move much compared to the wheel so you might see fairly high damping at the shock which is not much at the wheel. Based on linear damping I would start out with about 60 lbs of damping at 5" of velocity at the wheel. So if you have a .5 motion ratio (the shock moves .5 of an inch when the wheel moves 1 inch ) that would mean you would like to see the shock putting out 240 lbs at 5" of velocity. You just need to do the math for any given motion ratio. It only matters what the wheel thinks the damping is, not the damping at the shock. I would just start with the same amount of damping for compression and rebound and go from there. That should get you in a range that you can work with. Thanks for watching!!!

Good day. Tell me please. Yamaha R6 2006-2007 year of manufacture. In the service manual, the oil Ohlins RT43 is specified. What viscosity index should I pour 5W into it?

Hi. Use Ohlins 1309 which is 5 weight. Avoid other brands of oil. See my KZread video "Why Ohlins Oil"

The problem with ohlins equipment is the people selling them are all different (different people giving different spring rates for same person) I have had 3 different recommended spring rate for myself on the same bike, shock and riding style. What your recommendation for spring rate on a ttx rear shock for a 120kg rider on 2014 r1 who rides 80% track and 20% fast road? Other than loss some weight hahaha

The answer is that I don't know. First you need to know your motion ratios. Also it depends on what the shock damping looks like and where you are running your adjustments. The rules that I think are correct are linear damping and most compression damping and least rebound damping . The more compression damping you have the less rebound damping you need and vica versa and the least overall damping. Sometimes when you have too little compression and too much rebound the shock can pump down and preload the spring which makes things feel harsh. You also want soft springs. The other thing that I believe is there is no difference between what you want on the track and on the street. Grip is grip. Shocks and forks are velocity sensitive so on a smooth surface or slow inputs it automatically puts out less damping and on rough surfaces or faster inputs it automatically puts out more damping if you have linear damping. It also matters as to how much spring preload you are running. If you watch Moto GP they are constantly changing things. If there was one answer they wouldn't be changing things. My advice is to just start out with the softest spring recommendation and go from there. Thanks for watching!!

Hi Thanks for the comment!! I really don't know the answer. On the auto side Ohlins specifies 1304 which I think is thicker. I think the oil weight is pretty specific to what the damper is used for. I think heat is more of a product of how much heat the shock sees. I have TTX40s on my formula car. I run 1304 in the rear shocks because they are right in back of the engine and above the oil tank. I run 1309 in the front as they are situated above my legs and inside the bodywork and don't get much heat. Just my idea.

Hi Gilberto. I have only used 1304 and 1309. 1309 is 5w. I think 1314 is 10w and 1316 is 20w. Double check to make sure I am correct on the last 2.
