Why Not Try a New Garden Style? Let's Tour Oudolf Garden Detroit for Ideas and Inspiration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Oudolf Garden Detroit is located in Michigan USA on Belle Isle which is an island in the Detroit River. The garden opened to the public on August 28, 2022.
This garden is a great example of a natural planting scheme that focuses on plants and grasses that maintain interest throughout the growing season. Not only that, the plants also attract pollinators and birds, improving the overall biodiversity of Belle Isle.
In this video, I take us on a tour of the garden and talk about what makes the Oudolf style special and some tips on how we might use this style as inspiration for our own gardens.
Oudolf Garden Detroit has a fantastic resource on their website called the interactive map. The map allows people to study the original Oudolf plans and includes plant names and more.

Hi, love this video. I'm Dutch and I had the honour to meet Piet Oudolf a couple of times at his home and see his own garden. It was a beautiful experience and back than he and his wife had a beautiful nursery. Many of those perennials I bought from there ( some are 20+ years) are still very good and flowering year after year there socks off🌺💮 , so to me he is a real garden Hero! I love the Detroit garden, very beautiful 💫✨ Bye.

What a coincidence! I have admired P.Oudolf for years and I have recently bought his book about creating natural gardens. I love his style of planting, I wish I had more space to do the same.

I love his style too. It was really eye opening to watch the garden being planted. There are thousands of plants. I bought the book Planting-A New Perspective by Oudolf and Kingsbury and it's fantastic as well.

My most cherished childhood memories are of playing in the tall grass fields of my grandparent’s pastures. Now that I have space for a garden I’ve been trying to design a border that evokes the old farm using grasses, tall flowers and crushed shell paths. I had no idea this was a style, much less a named style. This garden is just beautiful!

Thank you for this video. For me, as a dutch person living in michigan, its nice to see that Piet Oudolf designed the Detroit garden on Belle Isle. I always wanted to see Belle Isle and now especially. I love visiting gardens. But since I live at Higgins Lake it's a bit far unfortunately. I guess I will have to settle for his book for now. 😊

Thank you Garden Moxie for showing a beautiful jewel in Detroit, Michigan. I didn't know about this new garden or heard of the garden designer. I visited Belle Isle Park last in 2021 for a birthday party. I will take a ride to visit this summer. I won't be getting on the Giant Slide ride, lol... 😳 I had way too much fun on it growing up. I love watching your videos and some people can be so rude in the comments section. Great work! ❤

I recommend checking out the Oudolf Garden Detroit website. They have tons of information about the plants. The garden in the video sits in full sun. You can do something similar. You just need to pick plants that right for the conditions where the garden will be.
What are the white blooming plants at 6:15? I noticed they had loads of pollinators.

I visited the garden this past January and I think many of the plants are cut down in early Spring. They have an excellent website that tracks all the plantings and status of the garden. It is worth checking out if you are a fan of Oudolf.
If I wanted a weed patch, I'd just stop gardening. I wouldn't put effort into it.
Beautiful video, but I’m afraid mispronounces the designer’s name. ˈʌudɔl(ə)f. That’s OU like ouch! dolf, rhymes with golf. But a lovely tour nevertheless.
