Haters please check out “Project Farm’s” video where he compared a bunch of air filters including Wix and K&N: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pX5nro9-XdjMidI.html Spoiler, his results match what I’ve stated in this video, I may not have fancy test equipment but I do speak from experience in all my videos.

Matt's Garage I wish he would have done a dry synthetic air filter that doesn’t use oil in his test. I use an AEM drop in dry synthetic filter with an Air Aid Jr. Intake, the stock intake and paper filters kept causing my truck to stall at low speeds.

I agree, even from my own empirical research & experience...The cost and possiblity of over/under lubing it wasn't worth it for me, especially after fouling my MAF sensor so quick. I went back to paper, they're super cheap and not at all significantly restrictive!

I like Project Farm...but that test was skewed, his methodology was highly unscientific in this filter test. I will post here what I posted on his site: "I found this test interesting and informative, my only concern is (I have no skin in this game since I am using an OE mopar air filter and I have no affiliation with K&N) how "real world" is it to dump a humongous amount of particles right on top of the filter?..In a worst case scenario this would never happen, (maybe a severe dust storm in Saudi Arabia?) and it does stand to reason a filter like K&N would with an oiled high flow filter, do much worse because the system is being overwhelmed..couldn't you just do a test running normal air and using your sensitive meter to take the numbers after an hour or so? K&N says that their filters filter out 97%-99% based on the ISO 511 testing which is the internationally accepted test protocol for testing air filters and intake kits. According to K&N, their filter absorbs the dirt and debris into the oil based material instead of blocking them like a normal paper filter would, and again this cannot work when confronted with the overwhelming amount you tested with. They run tests that are similar to what we see in real life, with that in mind the K&N filter meets or exceeds OEM standards. I would like to see this test rerun using a more realistic test model.

Does he not realize that small partials pass through the air filter but are burnt in a combustion and get filtered through the oil via oil filter??? It's not a N95 mask bro it's a car air filter...

I'm sure these filters have been tested by their Engineers/Designers and would not want people opening any type of law suite against them. I've used them for years on all my vehicles and I've never had an issue with them. I own a 2019 Audi Q5, witch unfortunately no filter is made for this vehicle yet.a but I do own a BMW, and two Mercedes with over 200,000 miles on them and the air filters were installed when vehicles were first purchased new in 2005, and yes they are still running strong.I 'm an ASE and Bosch Certified Automotive Technician with over 30 years of experience. My specialty is Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, and any type of exotic vehicles. I also build American muscle cars. Ford, Mopar, and Chevy are now using from the factory these types of after market filters. Like I said we are all entitled to our opinion but I never have had an issue with K&N.

AEM is a dry flow filter. Not only for cold intakes but also for replacement air filters. As far as K&N after spraying the oil I still let it dry for like 20 minutes but usually I let it dry for a few hours. That’s just my experience and I haven’t had issues. But hey to each their own.

The amount of particles shown in the air box is not adequate enough to damage your engine, even with a standard filter you will find some amount of dust inside your air box. Oiling your K&N during service intervals will help dust prevention, Just don't over oil the filter as that can clog up your sensors.

@@CarswithNash I did research before I fitted a K&N air filter to my Landcruiser ( Lexus GX 460 in the USA ) I live in Cyprus where its hot and has dry dusty roads in summer and very dusty when going offroad , I read some reports that said K&N filters let in dust through and other reports that said NO dust got stuck to the upper case or MAF sensor , so I made sure I cleaned the upper case ( lid ) and cleaned the MAF sensor just before fitting a K&N air filter , 15,000 miles later I cleaned the K&N air filter and checked the upper lid and inlet to the engine in the upper air box and it was as clean as it was when I cleaned it , I did the finger test to see if it left a cleaner line in the surrounding area and no finger lines were present , used a wet wipe to clean upper lid and nothing was found on the wet wipe , the MAF sensor was as clean as it should be at 15,000 miles of use (I always clean MAF sensor when changing air filters which I change paper filters at 15,000 miles , I think the problem with K&N filters letting dust or grit past them in large amounts is to do with substandard air box lids or the air box itself in such cases ( crap workmanship at the manufacturer ) and therefore need rubber grease applied round the base rim where the K&N fits to make a air tight fit , I have enjoyed maintaining my own car/trucks since 1977 when I bought my first car ( a Mazda RX3 ) and take great pride in doing a better job than main dealers or garages due to taking longer time to let oils and fluids to drain , doing services at less miles than suggested and using fully synthetic oils for engine diffs and transfer box and fully synthetic ATF fluids etc . K&N air filters pass my high expectations that I have on any parts or service oils and fluids that I will use on my vehicles .

Same with me. I used k&n air filter on my previous car Opel Astra Coupe Bertone. I have totally cleanned air box before k&n drop in. After 10000 km (6200 miles) made a finger test and found no any kind of small particles\sand\dust. Wiped with clean wipe and it was still clean. Now I own Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with Denso MR968274 air filter and it costs 28$ on amazon, not cheap. It is made of some kind of material (not paper) and on 10000 km (6200 miles) filter inspection I found dust in lower part of an air box (after filter). Probably I will go with k&n again, oil is catching dirt more efficiently then dry filter. And yes, I had no MAF oil issue on my previous car.

Yesterday I pulled out the KN filter from my Toyota 86 after 60,000km, first time I've checked the filter. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the clean side of air box, it was spotless (no dust or oil residue at all). The filter on dirty side was dirty as it should be, showing it does the job it's supposed to do. I've cleaned the filter and waiting for it to dry which is the main PITA of this process. I think the KN filter kept the air box cleaner than the OE Denso filter, and the car feels slightly more peppy when driving it due to the roughly 5hp more I get. I'm satisfied with the KN filter and will continue to use it.

I just posted this to the Project Farm Video - - You have great videos! I especially like the Ford Ranger videos. One comment on this video, is that how you think dirt/particles enter your Filter Box? All at once and dumped in with a sifter? The K&N Air Filter doesn't work like the Barrier Air Filters, the oil and cotton filter media absorb the particles. If you redo this test and introduce the particles slowly over time, the Barrier Air Filters will likely do slightly better, but the K&N Air Filter will do much better. Automotive Air Filters are tested to ISO 5011 Standards. Thanks for great videos and for doing stuff I don't want to do to my engines but always wanted to know the results of. - Stiles

For those who do a lot of highway driving esp in very dusty dirty areas, this can be an issue. With lots of volume of fresh air and air pressure, perhaps there is slight "leakage" through KNN membrane (oiled or not). However, for those who do a lot of city driving especially with stop and go driving in heavy traffic (conditions in Asian cities), these KNN's that breath more freely than stock OEM paper filters, make a noticeable difference in power, how quietly the engine idles and runs and ESPECIALLY with the stop-start functionality on Honda vehicles. I keep BOTH a K&N (which is my daily driver) and the OEM Honda filter and swap them depending on driving conditions and cleaning of the filters themselves. One thing I want to test is the use of Scotchbrite Sponges that are cut-to-fit, I hear they do a great job of filtering while letting decent air flow. Will update. Thanks for helpful video of the OP. So definitely a hot button topic in car circles. I appreciate your findings. I’ve got a high mileage Mini Cooper. Love the car, and I’ve learned a lot about highs and lows etc. I thought a K & N might damage my MAF sensor, so I did a proper cleaning. No issues. I drove about 25k and decided to swap with an oem paper filter. Keep in mind the K & N filter wasn’t incredibly dirty when I pulled it. After dropping in the oem paper filter, I actually felt more throttle response. I’m about to finish a tank of gas That I filled up at the same time as the paper filter. I don’t see a crazy difference in mileage, but I definitely feel a bit more giddy up. A backer of the AEM/K&N style filters says the fibers move back and forth to catch particles. 🤔 Grit is larger than a particle. You felt plenty of that get through. Thanks again my friend!

@@CarswithNash lol whaaat? U have lost me…. This is not a limited experience !? I just made an observation …. Your dry filter will not filter super fine dust particles if u don’t use it how it’s supposed to be used. When was the last time u recharged the oil in filter and I would recommend testing a product the way it is supposed to be used. 6-7microns is great!!! Not to mention the air flow / fuel / power gains. If your not into taking care and maintaining your vehicle then yeah just get paper OEM filter. if u just use your car and that’s it then don’t get a product that lasts forever u have to maintain. That’s like jumping in a pool without water and being like this pool sucks u can’t swim laps lol. Just so beyond how the filter should be used it’s concerning.

@@naughtyorgneiss k&N style filters do not filter air as well as paper filters do. That is a fact. Living in the Arizona desert, fine dust is very common to be in the air. You cannot tell me that k@n filter works enough to catch most of that fine dirt. It has been proven k&N doesn’t filter fine particles. Over time and probably 100k miles, you would see unnecessary wear on the cylinder walls and piston rings, all because the air isn’t as clean as it should be for the sake of minimal horsepower gains, or coolness factor. I’ll stick with paper and help ensure longevity of my motor. I’ve never seen a high mileage vehicle 200k plus, that has had a k&N filter its whole or most of its life, that didn’t have issue of compression. It’s all premature wear by fine dust over the miles driven. I’m a mechanic by trade for 6 years, but also worked on cars 4 years before that on the side. So I do see real world problems over vasts amounts of vehicles. Perhaps if your in a humid climate, dusty air isn’t as prevalent as the desert and could understand how one would feel k&N filters are ok long term. But it’s definitely a no!!!!! In the desert dust.

The paper filter is around 12 times the surface area, so a K&N needs holes 12times bigger to pass the same amount of air. The paper one will keep working until nearly fully blocked too.

For a filter to get better as it gets dirty isn't the best. 80% of the reason why your oil is dirty if from the air filter. A new K&n oiled up isn't efficient until it gets dirty to help with the filtration.

  • @cr9953

@ Hat Bird At K&n they say it gets better as it gets dirtier. So a fresh oiled filter isn't as good at filtering as a filter with 6 months of use on it. I put a K&n into my wife's car stock box. Straight from factory the oil caused engine codes due to the oil. I used to Run K&N as part of my Air intake from them. I had roughly 9 months of use on the filter it was dirty. My friend built a box to test cone filters had a vacuum under and mesh between. We pulled my filter mounted to the box then he placed a cotton ball on the metal mesh. With vacuum on you can hear it through the filter, he sprinkled light dust over the filter. The cotton ball was a light brown. So you can watch K&n do their research or you can do your own. I've since replaced the cone filter for a Dry Amsoil Nono Fiber cone filter. I put 8 months on it before I did the same test with the box and the cotton ball was still white no dust came through. This filter you clean with air.

Been a Amsoil Dealer for 12 years. The oil filter is there to clean the impurities. Oil filter is second line of defense but the dirt has already been exposed to the engine before the filter could remove it. I run everything amsoil including the oil filter. It's the same technology as the air filter. As long as your running a quality filter that has a bypass if it gets clogged it will bypass the filter. A air filter that is bad can caused issues if the oil filter is clogged as well. You want your oil to be dirty thats it working.

  • @cr9953

@Hat Bird It's possible, one option you can do is take a sample of oil and send off to a lab. Amsoil uses independent labs you can buy a kit on their site. It's like getting blood work done but on your oil. It can show any underlying issues maybe inside the engine and the oil is picking up.

Installation fit problem? I used a K&N on my Honda Accord V6 Coupe and had to struggle with the cover fit. I’d get it all snug and looking good then found while replacing the cover it would grab ahold of my then invisible filter heavy rubber seal causing me to struggle to get the cover in place. Every time I removed the cover to be sure there were no distortions in the seal I found signs of distortion that caused a gap in the seal. I eventually became able to get the cover on with reasonable assurance all was OK. But I could never be sure and this caused me to pull the cover every few thousand miles to check. I did find the seal was distorted a couple of times I did my worried checks and just had to abandon the filter. This seems like a possible problem if your cover doesn’t go back in place smoothly. Excellent video, thank you, I’ll stay with my bmw OEM paper filters for now as the stock performance is already astounding.

After experimenting with numerous types of filter media, they discovered that an oiled cotton design allowed the filter to not only capture contaminants very efficiently, but also allowed it to be washed and reused, and the original K&N® High-Flow Air Filter™ was born. It is because everyday drivers do no know how to take out, oil and maintain K&N filters properly. Therefore it is not recommended for them. Just like you don't recommend a water cooled computer setup for someone who has 0 technical experience and cannot refill and bleed their water lines.

1st off decent video. however I see flaws and I am going to point out the most notable. The air box. who is to say the minor dirt noted in the air box had not come from prior filters or poor cleaning during the changing of prior filter replacements. I get the point you are trying to make, however I myself have used K & N for over 15 years in vehicles as old as 23 years old in my fleet. Every 2 years I recharge said filters and feel I have great performance and no engine failures. no oil burning or loss of oil between changes. I use them on harley's, lexus, toyota, and silverado 2500 hd diesel. I haven't thrown one in my newer porsche as of yet, but will likely follow suit. When I recharge them, they are normal dirty during the cleaning process. I too use the back lighting to make sure of the oil RE-coating when recharging. I have saved a great deal of money, in air filters purchases and my dyno results with the harley are very good. Personally, yeah, I am sticking with the girl I brought to the dance.... Works for me.

jonny0004 Because I know the history of this car, I know the guy who put the air filter in it... Also as I said it wasn’t a limited observation, it’s something I have noted on multiple different vehicles that I have serviced that used drop in K&N filters. One of the vehicles I speak of did end up with a bad engine, I’m not saying it was from the K&N but it probably didn’t help. Personally I just feel a lot more comfortable with the paper Wix filter and I’m not that concerned about a couple horsepower that I may or may not gain.

Installed one on my Boxster 986 3.2S and within a few days got MAF sensor alarms so suspected oil contamination. Put my old original filter back in and still getting alarms. Cleaned the MAF sensor to no avail. The only way to cure it was to change the Maf sensor. 12 k miles later still clear so thats enough evidence for me.

Btw, being for real here. You can wash most disposal filters many times before replacing. Key is to have two so that you can dry one. I would wait at least a week before reinstallation so....yeah you dont want any dampness at all and they take forever to dry. Use a degreaser, fairly mild one, to spray it down. Wet it and let it sit for a bit then use a hose nozzle to force water through it until clean. Make sure to get every part of the breathing surface. Then set it somewhere where it can get sunlight or at least a lot of fresh air. I leave mine out of the sunlight and it takes about a week. Then I put it back in its box. Oh and never do this with cabin filters. Any bit of mold or bacteria is no good to breath really.

1st off Great comment. I used a K&N on the wooly mammoth I used to ride during the Pleistocene Era to filter the asteroid debris from the air. He survived just fine until I killed and ate him. Also, have ran one on a Nissan Titan the entire time I've owned it. Has 301,000 miles on it and still runs like a Swiss watch. Everyone should run what the feel comfortable with on their vehicle, but I haven't had any issues using them on the 3 vehicles we own.

I live in Phoenix. My current car has had a K&N in it since I bought it with about 8K on it in 2016. It is at 98K and I just did a few of the 100K recommended services (plugs, injectors, fuel system flush, tranny flush) and everything looks really good. No dust seen past the filter, though some oil from the filter gas caused a thin layer on the intake. MAF is still going strong. Only real thing is the blended E15 gas caused some significant carbon build up so I imagine the cylinders are a bit grimier than they would be if I lived in a more rural area not forced to have Clean Air blends. This is my third car with K&N filters and I love them. Never really seen a performance boost, fuel is minimal to none, but not tossing trash needlessly into landfills is a boost.
