Also another problem with low profile tire is that they can surprise you unpleasantly, they have a lot of grip but when they loose grip they slide instantly and you lose traction without warning while bigger sidewall tires start to screech and whine when they start to lose traction and usually let you know to back off the throttle a bit

I would say, high profile tires arnt good for active driving and cornering. They just roll and then you are driving on the sidewall with no thread! Fast driving, straight line and cornering, a tire with some sidewall, but not all the way down to low profile is good.

I put 18" factory rims that were taken off new (Buick). Put them on my '99 S/C Regal- looks stock, used a matched size (factory was 16") to the OEM tire size. The car is modified, but not nuts. It still rides well, slightly more firm. But no way I'd go any lower- it would ride terribly and there is no performance gain. Public roads are not race-track smooth, so all the chassis is going to do is be jumping around.

Posting here one more time. I just cannot help, but feel compelled to let Scotty know that he's advice is always down to earth and so wise. If you have the money go for the most exotic car money can buy and never ever regret it. If it fails you can always go and get a new one. For the rest of us plain street guys and girls with more sensitiveness on expenditures take Scotty's advice always. We may not like Scotty's car preferences but the advice gives the right perspective when time comes to get a car's replacement, either new or used. Unless you are fighting your own wallet, then go and sacrifice it to your aspirational feeling, which is what the automakers are pointing at, in the first place.

I have a C5 Corvette race car with 30 side wall 335mm wide tires on them. It handles amazing on track, but when I tried to drive it on the street (when it was still legal) like that, the suspension + no tire side walls = teeth-shattering ride. Totally agree, i had those same sticky michelin super sports that came with my MS3, they only lasted 4300 miles before they disintegrated, and the ride was apalling. I switched to smaller 17 inch rims with normal tyres and theyre great, better comfort, less traction means easy wheelspin, and they are cheap. However, top speed, acceleration and high speed stability will suffer.

Well said Scotty. Many want the nice big wheels and tires to set their vehicle apart from the rest on the road. I can respect that and also like the look of larger rims and tires. As long as they don't complain about curb rash or a bent wheel when they hit that large pothole, or when they have to replace those expensive high speed rated low profile tires, usually a lot more often. There's always a compromise and a price to be paid.

60 to 65 profile tires should be sufficient for the vast majority of everyday drivers, in sedans, SUVs, even sporty coupes. A tire is considered part of a vehicle's suspension - even of an airliner's! And if any part of that suspension chain lacks sufficient compliance, there will be excessive NV&H(noise, vibration and harshness). In the case of lower profile(55 & under) tires, the steering will seem too light and over-responsive, even if correct vehicle mfg. cold pressures are maintained and the alignment is kept up.

Those stiff sidewalls also have a tendency to leak around the bead a LOT more than standard tires, especially during periods of low ambient temperatures. We have LP tires on a Fusion Sport that constantly generate LTP warnings when the outside air temp drops below 20 degrees. As pointed out in the vid, they ride rough as well.

I have a Falcon G6E-T - when I bought it some years ago, the 19" was an option you had to pay extra for - I test drove both the 18" and the 19", and on our shitty NZ country roads the 18" was just much better in every way - so I skipped the 19's on the option sheet :-) Since then over 5 years even on 18's I've had to have 2 rim repairs done from hitting massive pot-holes and warping them - 19's would no doubt be even worse for that kind of thing too.

Yeah mate no doubt. I wasn't arguing that low profile give the same protection as a higher one would, just saying that because they are low profile doesn't automatically make them rough to drive on. I run 20" wheels on my car at the moment with slightly stretched 30 series tyres. Already put a small dent in them, but thats the risk you take if you want you car to look nice.

Speedometer now reads 1% high instead of 2% too low. The tires I fitted were Michelin Defender T+H, but I hear the Continental TrueContact and the Perelli P4 Four Seasons Plus would also be a good choice for ride comfort and noise. It's amazing how good tires can make your car quiet and refined.

I do agree that higher profile tires are more comfortable, I have actually considered to get slightly smaller rims for winter tires, and use my current winter rims for summer tires to get a tad more comfortable ride. I doubt I'd ever go as high as 70 profile on summer tires though, would feel too sloppy, 55 ish profile is a good middleground IMO, I don't get those that go 30 or lower.

A friend with zero car knowledge uses low profile tire because that what his second hand car always uses. He had to buy new tire every month because they easily damaged when running over a small bump on road. Usually tire shop will only sell you a pair of tires, minimum, but with the low profile tire, they let you buy a single tire because they know you will come back in the next month.

I have a generation 1, 2010 Ford Fusion Sport , and it came with 18 inch sport rims and the low profile tires. I just replaced the tires few months back, and I've had nothing but problems with these tires even the original set that prematurely wore out. I had a blowout on front passenger side luckily coming off the highway going to my Dads house for the weekend. Damaged the alignment, and tierods on that side. Car was rapidly pulling to the right and couldn't be driven back an hour and half where I'm living for the moment. My wife had to get me and bring me back to our apartment. That car doesn't handle well in rain weather either. I could've gotten hurt or killed even ! So to anyone wanting these tires or a car for that matter I'd reconsider that choice. I hope to get an SUV or a Pick-up Truck again much safer.

My original plan was to put a junkyard engine into it. But I ended up buying a brand new engine from General Motors. Along with a myriad of other new parts. Once I had it running well I had a very good body shop slap a factory quality paint job on it. A lateral move to be sure. I made it my life's mission to never be that poor in those circumstances ever again. I studied hard and went to trade school and became an auto mechanic and had a very rewarding career fixing cars and building fire trucks. While not everyone can be a Bill Gates or a Donald Trump I do firmly believe that everyone can learn a trade and knock out a decent living! I went from 185/55r15s to 215/45r17s on my Ford (switched from the standards to some ST170 wheels that I picked up at a good price) and so far the 17s have been riding better and haven't kerbed either, although I have been super careful with them. I know that these aren't really super low profile but even still, it's a fair enough. difference. I'm not sure why it is that they ride better than the old wheels did since all the pressures are the same along with everything else, but I guess these just do. You're right about the alignment though. The car had a slight right pull in it and I decided to change the wheels prior to getting them aligned, although the cause was actually a faulty lower ball joint. The moment I changed it was suddenly so much more pronounced than before, and I drove it straight to the garage for an alignment and ended up having to wait and replace a ball joint. But that's all just my personal experience with making my shitbox Ford drive less like a shitbox Ford.

Nan Xing yes, the city and it’s roads are terrible. And depending on the area, as well, it gets worse. There has been recent construction to fix all that but mostly where the wealthy live. But for me, the time I need to go inside the city I use the highways which are relatively clean to use. Other than that I’m proud to say the roads where I live and the ones I use are well maintained and clean from trash. I’ve been to Alabama and the roads there are really nice.

I've lived both in the UK and the USA, and I would say American roads are generally in better condition.

I wish u can meet my grandpa Bruce. He has been working on cars since he was seven years old and he is fifty-six right now and is a certified master mechanic and body and paint work for years. He has a lot of stories on all the cars he has done and seen how alot of mechanics messed up other peoples cars. U and him explain much about everything how to fix a car correctly.

just a tip , low profile tyres do not increase performance or handling , there is a reason why high end race cars , track slicks ,drag slicks and semi slicks have a large side wall , its to flex and bend over the track/road to gaining as much traction as you can , think of it like this when you lay down on a hard bed less of your body is contacting the bed because it quite stiff, when you lay down on a soft bed it tends to wrap around you and causing more contact . tyres work the same but also including compound/brand and size you will be spending about 3x more and only get half the amount of distance but they are for people who enjoy driving hard with high powered cars .

Best thing I ever did with low profiles tires and aftermarket "special" alloy wheels in my cars. Was to get rid of them ASAP. Thankfully there's still enough ignorant out there that will buy anything just because it's shinny. Honestly people, if you don't have a damn clue what your doing. At least leave it well alone while it's working as it should. Buying a set of wheels/tires implies at least have an idea what offset, width, etc. will mean, while those are in the car and the car is on the move. Transforming a perfectly good working vehicle into a lousy moving machine and spend money on top. It's definitely not a good idea.

If some followed all the advice from all these videos, I’d like to see what they’d be driving. It’d be impossible to find a vehicle. The next one’s going to be titled, “Why to not buy a vehicle and walk the 35 miles to work instead.”

I like this guy but C'mon some of the information is just wrong. It's not the width of the tire that causes it to wear out more quickly. It's the runner compound. Wider tires tend to be softer which wear our more quickly. It's not the width itself that increases wear.

Vasek Cekan Exactly right! Lower profile tires also mean higher cornering speeds which means higher wear rates. They are also more often fitted to higher performance cars which again means higher torque application which means faster wear. It has absolutely nothing to do with width.

Vasek, I think Scotty tries to make it simple, so most people will understand. Face it, if he goes into details about everything he talks about, many people have no idea what he is talking about, & wouldn't watch his videos.

Wisest advice ever. When I was a teenager i made the mistake to put big 17" rims with low 45 tires on a Celica 165 St. Biggest mistake ever. I now ride big ole 205/65/15 tires in my corolla and I'm happy as ever.
