Why Nobody Plays Toons | Yu-Gi-Oh!
Toons are one of the most well-known archetypes in all of Yu-Gi-Oh. They were even played by the creator of Duel Monsters, Pegasus, in the anime! Featuring iconic cards like Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon and Toon Dark Magician Girl, this theme is known by pretty much every old school and new school player. Sadly, despite being so popular within the community, Toons have never gotten a chance to see widespread competitive use in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. In today's video I'll cover the major issues with the Toon theme, and I'll also talk about some areas where I feel like Konami could improve this fan favorite strategy!

I won a huge tournament in 2004 you’ve never heard of that didn’t exist with toons what do you mean nobody plays them
My first deck as a kid was the Pegasus starter deck, getting toon blue eyes out always made my day as both toon blue eyes and toon world were unsearchable one-ofs in my 60 card deck 😄
Every time I look at toons, they make me think "this would be a nice gimmicky otk deck" and then I look at all of the different types of contradicting effects for their support and think "this would be a cool gimmicky control deck instead" and then realize how fragile the deck is for control and can't help but crumble in a ball of tears knowing this cool concept for an archetype will keep getting shattered by any small gust of wind
the real reason nobody plays toons is because nobody can afford them
Nothing shocked me more then seeing the Toon World card as a kid. I thought it would have so many effects and it just said pay 1000 life points to use and I was like WTF? 😂
Toon monsters are for some reason an entire type, despite every Toon having Toon in their name
Reminds me of back in the early 2010s there was 1 dude who would always bring toons to locals. It was simultaneously the most expensive deck in the room with one of the lowest winrates while being responsible for like 60-70% of all judge calls
Toon monsters got a huge Skill cap only Pegasus can pull off
“Like a toon stratos” it took me a couple seconds before realizing it can LITERALLY just be a Toon Stratos
Can we also talk about how 2020 gave us Toon Chaos, and that set didn’t contain a desperately needed reprint of Toon Kingdom?
I remember having a Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon as a kid and just using it like a regular Blue-Eyes during recess. None of my friends called me out on it because none of us were brave enough to read the effect start to finish.
As a concept, Toons are amazing:
I think the single largest thing holding Toons back is their unique gimmick: attacking directly. Making them have summoning sickness, making them require Toon World and making them bad at swarming are all intentional balancing decisions to counteract their ability to ignore your opponent’s monsters.
The worst part about this archetype, almost like Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes, and Dark Magician, is that it's extremely expensive too, while not at all being worth it. I've seen novice players purchase the cards for a Toon deck, rarely win their games, then either completely regret their purchase or complain that Yu-Gi-Oh is too expensive without realizing how many powerful budget decks are out there.
I'm a big fan of toons in duel links. Pegasus with the free toon world skill is great
It's a darn shame to as the Toon Monsters being Over Powered in the anime was one of the reasons why I wanted to build a Toon Deck as a kid.
As a fan of toons, I think noone should be mad at you for saying that toons just aren't competitive. No need for you to justify yourself this much in my humble opinion. Thank you for the entertainment, I love your videos ❤️
It's a shame, because I remember how, for a short while, toons sorta felt OP in my school. Now, granted, most kids there had JUST starter decks Kaiba and Yugi with very minor alterations from super early boosters like Metal Raiders and whatnot... But yeah, the fact that a toon monster could straight up just jump over your front row and attack you directly felt... well, it felt almost like cheating. It was one of those rare instances in which the real TCG actually sorta FELT like the anime in that you were fighting against these toons that would do weird, unorthodox things.
I think toons needs extra deck cards. Neos could be the fusion, stardust the synchro, Utopia the XYZ etc. And I think incorporating pendulums that act as toon world and set up the scale for summoning higher level monsters would be the best thing to do!
I’m glad he brought back “why nobody plays”!!
