Why Nobody Cares About Swimming

Ойын-сауық

While sports like basketball, football, baseball and soccer pull in billions of dollars and hundreds of millions of TV viewers, swimming doesn’t even come close.
Why is it that swimmers have millions of fans cheering for them at the Olympics, but are left hung out to dry between Olympic competitions? Why aren’t all those bandwagon fans becoming REAL swimming fanatics? And why does it seem like Michael Phelps is the only swimmer to ever break out into mainstream media? Let’s dive into why no one cares about swimming.

The main reason is swimming is done inside the water and the viewer dont gets a proper view of the athlete’s performance, stroke style, face etc.. that makes swimming boaring to watch as a race. But swimming tutorial’s, technique’s etc kids tutorial and all are very interesting

I would kindly disagree to this “main reason”. If you look at track, the runners are in the open, but the sport also has the same problem as swimming. So I think the points mentioned in this video are more important then because it is done in the water.

The biggest difference between swimming and the other sports you mentioned is that in swimming the players don't interact with their opponents. In water polo the players still fight for possesion even while swimming. In swimming the competition is secluded as opposed to motorsport where someone can overtake you and come right in front, forcing you to interact with the obstruction and change course. Sports with direct interact with opponents are always popular. Tennis, hockey and chess are popular. Archery, golf and darts are not, for the same reason.

I love watching all swimming and diving; however, I cannot find any events to watch on tv. 😢 I love it so much because I focus on the technical details of the performer. I view both swimming and diving as forms of art and appreciate it in the same way that I appreciate music, paintings, ballet, etc. There are performers who have dedicated themselves to their art. Their goal is to better themselves and hopefully win. In trying to reach that goal, they strive for efficiency in form and function, through training and technique. What I see, when watching swimming and diving, is all that effort resulting in a beautiful execution of all that has been learned to date. And when I witness a performer execute technique and form masterfully, my heart races and my appreciation for the performer (athlete) is unbound.

without watching the video, off the top of my head: because most kids have access to a ball, so growing up, they get together with their friends and play soccer, basketball or football in their backyard so it becomes a part of their dna. So as adults, they are emotionally invested. Very few people have access to pools and it's not a fun game you can play with your friends. And Some competitions last literally 20 seconds. now I'll watch the video and I'll probably delete this comment. k.bye.

@@cag19549 You're 100% right. They don't. And that's why golf and tennis never pull in the numbers soccer and basketball do. They're way less popular. So those two are hybrids imho. As in, they're not accessible, so they're less popular than the big ones, but they're still ball games so they're more popular than swimming. Swimming is bad at both categories: people don't have access AND it's not a game.

Sadly it’s true. Even as a competitive swimmer, I tuned out to the World Champs this year and last year. I was more invested in the NBA finals last year (Go Warriors!) and then gave up watch the finals when the Dubs were eliminated, but followed the news because I liked Jimmy Butler and the Heat for their underdog and dog mentality. It’s the lack of storylines. We don’t have a Patrick Beverly who trash talks, the LeBron jokes, Draymond Green fighting everyone and punching teammates (and having that video get leaked) and we don’t even have GOAT debates (Jordan vs Kobe vs LeBron). We accepted Phelps and Ledecky are the GOATs in our sport. I mean in 2015, Golden State Warriors were trying to win a championship after several years of being a crap franchise until becoming a super team. Or 2020 NBA bubble when the Lakers was doing it for Kobe? Stuff like that gets people emotionally invested and watching their team grow.

I would say it all comes down to the very nature of individual vs team sports. Team sports can build big tournaments and leagues and go on for months on end. They also give the fans stronger connection since you get a we-feeling with the team you support. The concequences of this is more TV time, more sponsors more money and more fans, which puts it in an upward spiral. Individual athletes on the other hand cant be on big championships all the time. They train in different cycles to be at their best maybe once a year, since there is 100% focus on individual achievement. This leads to less TV, less sponsors, less money, less fans and down we go.

Australian news always broadcast drowning events and try to empathise that learning to swim, even as an adult is important. As a volunteer surf lifesaver on a beach, I see people with no understanding of surf conditions. I was like them once but I forced myself to learn. Whenever I take preventive measures like talking to individuals, everyone think that they can swim. They can’t even swim properly in a pool let alone in surf conditions. Patrolling the beach during Public Holidays is hard and a bit stressful at times.

As a coach and a parent, I noticed that parents in the swim meet only focus on their kids. Whereas, from a coach point of view, we have more swimmers that need our attention, so it makes the whole swim meet less boring. Not understanding the rules of the swimming competition also make it difficult for people to enjoy, for instance, some of the non-swimmer parents still asking why people are swimming breaststroke in freestyle events.

Every Czech child has to attend at least one semester swimming course in the primary school physical education..(for free).. which is nice but very insufficient level of swimming activity. But there is quite huge offer of the private group&individual swimming courses (non-professional), but as energy costs are increasing this is usually the most expensive free time activity for the kids&adults. Honestly, as A lifetime swimmer I love swimming, but I never was interested to watch swimming at TV (no matter whether its Olympics or other events). Its like baseball.. you can enjoy the highlights when watching sport news, but not loose time to see the whole boring and long game ending 1:0

unlike most sports with can last hour or so - you get to follow your or favourite team/player/fighter, to the next level, whereas swimming will only last a few minutes. There is also not much equipment you need for swimming, nothing trendy, fashionable so not many sponsors - not much a company can sell to the public, for everyday wear. You do not have to like running sports to enjoy a pair of expensive trainers or even be a gym user to wear tracksuit bottoms.

You have it reveresed. First you get the butts in the seats and then the sponsors come in. There are swimming competitions other than the international ones. I watch them. As fot TV, you have that reveresed too. People have to show that they're interested before the networks will give then air time. Spectators have to show up before the money or networks show up. A problem swimming has is the scratch. I stopped spending money traveling to meets because the people I wanted to see scratched. Ummm, golf and tennis are individual sports and those 2 sports bring in tons of spectators and money, and your athlete is "all you have". The swimming is expensive arguement goes down the drain because golf and tennis are expensive too; lessons, coaches, court and course fees, not to mention equipment. So I guess in your definition golf and tennis are niche sports. As a tennis player I can tell you that rackets, strings, coaches, shoes, court fees weren't cheap. Comparing swimming an individual sport to team sports is faulty. You should have compared it to individual sports like golf and tennis, very expensive sports that have succeeded in putting butts in the stands. And scratches? In tennis and golf there's a fine.

I wouldn't fret it. Swimming is the purest form of sport. The book, "Haunts of the Black Masseur: The Swimmer as Hero", states that sport of swimming starts when Rome built fountains to create a public musical sound to calm the citizens. As the fountains grew in size, so did the pools to keep them flowing. Competitive swimming was born. Football's injuries, baseball's boredom, and children's lack of ability to play basketball and tennis, lead many young persons to become interested in swimming. Soccer has risen, but many still prefer to swim. And, there's the rumor of a thing called, "swimmer's revenge". What is that? It's the notion that swimming is the best exercise overall and is so into our middle and older age. I can attest to that as true.

But what about running ? If you think about it, it's also a kind of boring, repetitive, long and individual focused sport. Yes, the 100m sprint in running is much shorter and exciting than in swimming, but you basically have very similar issues. To me it sounds like most people prefer watching team sports than individual sports, probably because the competition is much more direct and confrontational. I also think it's not just for sport but movies too. It looks like we like violence, conflict and watching people fight. Maybe that's why basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. is more entertaining to watch than people racing they're own race. But maybe I'm just spitballing.
