Why No Progressive Agenda Can Survive the Senate Filibuster

Ойын-сауық

Democrats won control of the Senate, House, and White House in the last election but STILL can’t get anything done. Why? Because while the Senate filibuster lives, no progressive agenda can survive.

    I am in AZ too. Can't wait to vote AGAINST Kirsten Sinema. Sinema is a hypocrite. Any progressive legislation that she may have supported in the distant past is being nullified by what she is doing right now. Sinema is a disgrace to progressives in Arizona. She is an example of why many people feel that supporting Democrats is a DEAD END.

    I don't mind the filibuster in its old form, where senators had to actually speak the whole time. That form of filibuster had real limits, and then bills could get passed with the simple majority needed. It's the modern form, where it is used as a defacto requirement to have a super majority on every bill, that needs to die.

    I’d be okay if they changed it to a talking filibuster- and they need to stay on topic. That way, if you want to filibuster something, you need to care enough about it to stand there and talk (again: on topic) for hours on end. Does Mitch care enough about any bills to actually put work in? That way, you can keep the ability for a minority party to filibuster a truly heinous bill, but because it would take actual effort, the number of filibusters would drop significantly. They’d have to pull a Wendy Davis. I think this is a reasonable compromise.

    I really don't think that would work. The current crop of Republicans only job is to destroy the kind of legislation the democrats want this session. This is what their donors pay them for. If they need to read Green Eggs and Ham for 72 hours straight to maintain their power, they absolutely will. Republicans are desperate enough to support an insurrection and the Big Lie. A talking filibuster won't stop their agenda.

  • @katherinemorelle7115

    @katherinemorelle7115

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@DirtFlyer I just can’t see them putting in the effort to speak for hours *on topic* for every bit of legislation the Dems put on the table. It’s so much easier to filibuster without actually filibustering. And so they do. If they’re going to prevent legislation from getting through, they should need to put actual effort in to it. I also think having something there that the Dems could use in the future is a good thing- see Wendy Davis’ massive filibuster effort to prevent a particular piece of TRAP legislation in Texas. If the filibuster didn’t exist, she wouldn’t have been able to do that. (I believe she also auctioned off the running shoes she wore into the chamber and donated the proceeds to Planned Parenthood). I don’t like the idea of getting rid of the filibuster altogether, because it means then the sensible people won’t have any way to prevent truly repugnant legislation when they’re in the minority. But having it as it is just allows the GOP to block any and all legislative efforts with no work or effort on their own part. That definitely needs to change.

    exactly the filibuster was created so someone could try to convey the realities of legislation or an appointment to the other members of congress before a vote. it has been used horribly at times though it is a vital check for it allows for critical debate before a controversial item comes to a vote. Let McConnell get up there and talk as long as he's physically capable of doing so, then go right ahead and have the vote anyway. As it stands, all a senator has to do is send an email saying he'd like to filibuster and it's done. There's no personal cost to it.

    Except that their agenda isn't moving forward. If they actually won, the "push back" wouldn't exist. If I win I get what I want, I wouldn't be stopped every 3 feet.

    “The legislative filibuster is the most important distinction between the Senate and the House. Without the 60 vote threshold for legislation, the Senate becomes a majoritarian institution, just like the House, much more subject to the winds of short-term electoral change. No Senator would like to see that happen.” Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, April 2017

    I think another good idea is to eliminate the 2 party system and first past the post. The Republicans can afford to drag their feet because the election deck is stacked in their favour. They will just wait until the next election. If the system became multiple parties and used single transferrable which prevents the chance for majority then there is no choice but to work

    So sadly true.. I have nightmares about 2022 elections with gop redistricting & spreading biglie to restrict voting more. Its disturbing to witness one of our political parties going full on authoritarian If we don't #EndTheFilibuster & pass #ForThePeopleAct to remove money from politics & ensure all eligible voters can vote, we are doomed
