Unfortunately, I have seen too many situations in which people who have fantastic skills get promoted to manage their departments. I'm a manager currently at a major retailer. The pressure from higher-ups is extremely high and the faults in the building are always placed on management's shoulders. We get absolutely lambasted during corporate visits and get laundry lists of notes to complete and usually an unreasonably short period of time to complete them. If they aren't complete, it is expected we not leave the building until they are. Salaried doesn't get paid for OT hours, so they don't care how long it takes or if we had prior obligations. It is at least the general perception that we are expected to cancel the rest of our lives at a moments notice if they "need" us in the building.

I was happiest during my working years, when I was given a lot of work to accomplish and I hit the ground running every morning. And at the end of the day, I left it all there at the office. 4) I hated working for people who had no business managing anything.

When I was a regular employee, I hated middle management and blamed everything on them. Now that I'm a middle manager, I realize just how little they control. You get to deal with all the petty, day-to-day stuff that upper management doesn't want to be bothered with, but when it comes to important decisions you still don't have much say. For us unskilled workers, middle management is our only shot at having a decent salary, so you learn not to care pretty quickly. Definitely miss the days when I didn't have to deal with everyone else's baggage and drama though. Btw, I think it's funny when I hear a worker complain that I have no idea what their job is like. I did their job for several YEARS before I became a manager, but they didn't start until after I was promoted and don't know that. It's almost like you have to "prove yourself" over and over to each new worker that you can do their job, before they believe you... while still finding time to also do your management work after they've clocked out and gone home, of course. Fuck that shit, bro!

I Recently left management. It’s harder now because every role is technical now, there is no paper pushing to give low performers. Also people push back more and it’s more an employee market in terms of tasks….I don’t have people to delegate too and say “because I said so” which sounds good in theory but also means that if I just need a letter sent for example, I have to print it and go to fedex to send it out. That multiple times a week means you never get to core work. Then you can’t pay “adult” salaries because execs are stuck in the 2000s

So true. Employers seem to be stuck in the 1980's when $100,000 was extremely good money. Now it is just a bare minimum household income to live any semblance of a middle class lifestyle (own a home, have a car or two, maybe go on a vacation once a year, save for retirement and kids college). If you live in a major metro area then $100,00k wont cut it. The average home price in the USA is approaching $500,000! Even still, despite the salary guides put together by labor research firms and staffing firms showing market rate for certain fields exceeding $100,000...employers seem to be hung up crossing that threshold and keep pussyfooting around the 90K range in my field...the dollar lost over 20% of its value in 18 months recently...times have changed, get with it.

I saw that at the company I worked for. Middle management including executive directors, expected to do their own (secy/administrative assistant) work, and their own job. It didn’t start out that way, but 20 years later, one person was doing the job of 3 people. Insane.

The largest companies on the country just have not had to pay more, they keep cutting quality down to keep buying more stocks. It affects smaller business, and then everyone else. That excuse that their having to raise prices such because of wage increase is a lie. Rent going up 300% has nothing to do with wages.

It's one of many useless roles. Do you really need someone who does nothing all day long but figure out how to interrupt production with numerous useless meetings. To conduct one-on-ones and other silly 🤪 tasks that are no benefit to those actually doing the work. To do performance reviews which are not beneficial and a huge waste of everyone's time? The bigger question is why can't society move past traditions and things that simply are no longer necessary or useful? 😳😮

I am a "middle manager". I've been since 2019, first year was a challenge. It's how you look at things. You need to control your emotions when things are rough and stop looking at the small issues but the bigger issues. Took a training on the kaizen and it has taught me wonders. Control your mental health before it controls you. That being said, 5am early gym session helps lol.

Most companies keep middle management in place so the higher ups/executives don't have to deal with the actual people doing the work, all the crap that comes with babysitting them, and handling the day to day BS of operations. However, when companies have financial struggles middle managers are usually first to go ...speaking from experience here.
