Why No Enemy Has Ever Destroyed Britain's Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank?

Ғылым және технология

British Challenger 2 main battle tanks could be heading to Ukraine to help its forces in their defence against Russia's invasion. It would mean Russia would be fighting an undefeated platform - not once has the Challenger 2 been destroyed at the hands of an enemy.
The Challenger 2 is one of the most protected tanks in the world. This main battle tank provides a very high level of protection against direct fire weapons. Challenger 2 uses second generation Chobham composite armor. It is lighter than the original Chobham, but offers better protection.

It’s not like we have the BAOR and 1BR Core anymore as we don’t. The Germans and yanks had also gone back on what was promised weeks ago. Anyway even if what was promised arrived? They would come under immediate bombardment. The Politicians have no clue. Just throwing away kit Britain can’t afford to lose. You do not become proficient on Armour in a few weeks. Much kit is being built up in Poland. The Russia 1st Tank Army is sitting on the Belorussian border just inside Belorussia with their forces sitting just incase to counter a drive from Poland. The fact that the Challenger II has not been bested is no recommendation when the opposition was only Russian supplied tanks that have been shown to have suspect ability. I think that sending only 14 Challenger 2 to Ukraine is an unnecessary complication of tank and ordnance especially when considering the number of Russian T-72s and T-60s the Ukrainians have along with the Leopard 2s that will be supplied. I doubt that the Challenger and Abrams MBTs will see service as the logistics simply don't make sense. The last thing the Ukrainians need is further variations of complicated western armaments. The KISS principle applies here. I believe the move to supply Challenger 2 and Abrams MBT was purely political and not practical.

  • @olicool11

@@olicool11 Yes, supplying the Challys was the key, but you have to ask why it was needed, it took the Brits to show the rest of NATO what to do, Ben Wallace has my deep respect. At last we have someone in Govt capable of doing the right thing. Whilst the Abrams is a very capable MBT it is a horrendous gas guzzler. It is illogical to send too many variants of MBTs, all of equal capability. Ukraine is at war, it does not have the luxury of time for full training on a myriad of different tanks and equipment and similarly, the logistics of servicing, maintaining and providing ordnance gets exponentially more difficult the more variants are supplied. KISS really applies here. I suspect that the US had to (offer to) send Abrams as the NATO lead but watch the US drag its heals because it knows supplying the Abrams does not make sense. Leopard 2s are the best option by far. The side issue here is that by supplying Ukraine with so much western weapons and technology is Ukraine becoming a NATO member by proxy?

This tank has only ever fought one war and one enemy in almost three decades of existence. And that was an enemy weakened by more than a decade of crippling sanctions with the same weapons it had a dozen years earlier. An enemy that was pretty much pulverised by air power before the Challengers rolled in to mop up what was left. The Challengers in Ukrainian hands won't be getting it that easy.

It's definatly tough but not invincible, the fact it's never been destroyed is more down to NATO combined arms system. Quite a few Abrams tanks are distroyed when not in Ameraican hands.

I used to drive them for a living, remember these tanks were designed to SUPPORT INFANTRY FIRST KILL TANKS SECOND The reason why there is no loss is because most of the time unlike The Americans we never went down main streets and funnels before Recon and Light Infantry. Remember Basra we stayed outside for about 2 weeks. Best Tank ive driven is Merkava Mk, i felt like i was in GODS TANKS, that was a guilty pleasure on "Holiday" in Israel.

Hmmm, Let us hope some of the Russians faced with them live to tell the tale - other Russians should learn just how inneffective their armour is against the previous generation of Westerns tanks. Maybe if the Russians wish to continue the misery we may even eventually see the latest generation tanks being used against the latest Russian ones. If they ever get any further than the parade ground in Red Square!

Take "great pride" in taking on against the British, German and American tanks?? 🤔🤔.... how my friend??! What pride you talking about?? Where is it? Or where has it been so far?? I truly haven't noticed any display of pride and/or victory against their adversary so far!! Reality is,,,pride isn't embellished by the Russian soldiers on the battlefield my friend..... rather engulfed by doubt, fear and trembling of who's number will be drawn today and so on.......huh, pride.....

@@vladimator1842 Not much pride in a mobile cremation vehicle or at the bottom of a mud filled trench or being known for the rest of your life as part of a raping/looting horde of convicts and psychopaths.

I'm not in the slightest bit happy that we've removed certain things on the challenger. To keep secretive about capabilities. If technology is compromised then lets just work harder to stay upfront
