    Statistical note: something to consider on the TikTok versus meta, etc. @TheProfGShow is assuming implicitly that a lot of factors are comparable, starting with the population distributing on TikTok and meta and the recommendation mechanism efficiency. I'm not saying 54/1 ratio isn't a lot, it's just that unless your WhatsApp group caters for these and other factors that can skew analysis in your study, the number is meaningless: it could well be Simpson's paradox.

    I'm pretty interested in the TikTok study. What constitutes "pro-Israeli" (Pro nation of Israel? Pro Netanyahu government and policies? Pro Gaza invasion?) and "pro-Palestinian" (Pro Palestinian state? Anti-Israel? Anti-Gaza attack?)? When a movement has traction and they feel comfortable defending their position, the "hype" is typically magnified disproportionally to the current position. Finally, I'd like the know the longitudinal statistics - specifically going back to October. I would venture around October 10 there was a disproportional shift in videos uploaded on TikTok supporting the Israelis. Having written that, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the Chinese were at least nudging the numbers.

    This has been the story for at least 25 years (the housing boom hid it for a while). The top 20% are doing very well, the top 1% are going gangbusters, and the rest are struggling to make ends meet. The US isn't seeing a rise of populism because of random chance. The wealthy have so far done a good job of pointing blame at other poor people (immigrants) but nothing will change until our attention is focused on the wealthy who are taking most of the profits and the upper middle class who horde what's left over.

    Not just China; Japan also has had a plummeting birthrate for many years without implementing a one-child policy. Children are becoming a liability more and more, especially given justifiable growing pessimism about a world worthy to grow up in, starting with climate change alone. There's also the looming threat of nuclear annihilation at its highest since the cold war, the solipsism of newer generations and alienation, the negative effects and exploitation of technology, corporatism and neoliberalism, and other sociopolitical factors or at least perceived factors. Now, social and political problems change, evolve, and can be fixed. We can't refreeze permafrost and glaciers, however. I saw a lot of this coming when I was young in the 80s and decided not to have children. As I like to say I love my unborn children too much to have them. I don't regret my decision and am in fact quite relieved.

  • @apine5636

    @apine5636

    Why can’t we refreeze the glaciers? In order to achieve net zero, we’re going to have to overbilled solar so that, in the summer time, we will have multiples of more energy than we can possibly use. We will use some of that energy to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere. Then the question Will become “ at what temperature shall we set the world’s thermostat?!” That will be quite a tussle!

    I think Eds comeback for Scotts theory on young people being pro Palestine because of Chinese influence on Tiktok hit the nail on the head. Maybe there is a bit of influence there for sure but I think its plain ignorance and bias to think that that's the key factor to peoples sympathies with Palestine. I think the more obvious and blatant reason for young peoples support of Palestine is that young people are more clued in to the atrocities that are happening in real time. I really dont understand why Scott would make this prediction other than to discredit peoples pro-Palestine support. Scott can come up with all the theories under the sun to justify his silly support of Israel at this stage of the war but its clear to anyone with a moral compass that they are disgustingly on the wrong side of the war now.

    Totally. It was good to see Ed pushing back on Scott who’s totally losing it. I think pro-Palestine are also watching pro Israel people like Scott but he doesn’t understand. So, we’re getting a range of views. I’m not learning about Israel history of occupation on TikTok but rather KZread with experts, debate (like on Piers Morgan), reports on Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, Haaretz, etc). TikTok just shows updates on the current situation, protesting happening that the media won’t show you. Scott and the people who are on his new group on WhatsApp want more censorship to cover for Israel’s genocide. Human Rights Watch reported in December 2023 about Meta’s policies of silencing voices in support of Palestine but no crying from Scott and his WhatsApp group. TikTok is the platform not controlled or influenced by “the only democracy in the Middle East” or its special interests.

That’s theyre next war. If you want to help Palestine educate yourself - don’t just repeat what feels right. Taking sides in the Middle East conflicts is being a pawn. Demand cooperation, demand a real solution - taking sides is what they want. That way you keep the war going. As a side not free Palestine form what? Israel basically withdrew from Gaza and wiped its hands I. The early 2000s - then Hamas took over and drove the place further into the ground. The truth is no one in the region likes the idea of Palestine as a reality, but man is it a motivating fantasy for the masses (as you have shown).

If Scott’s theory that our young people are being manipulated toward being on the right aide of history and it is divisive, then we owe them a debt of gratitude for the push in the right direction. The argument of weaponising TikTok to explain the 54-to-1 ratio seems one-sided. Meta and Google heavily restrict pro-Palestinian content, leading creators to turn to TikTok and X, generating drastically more content and engagement. The situation is far worse for Arabic content which is pretty much censored, and considering the long-standing US and EU (social) media manipulation, a correction is likely overdue even if temporary.
