Why Natural Hair Advice Sucks | Why I Hate The Natural Hair Community | The Curly Girl Method Rant

In this video, I will be discussing why I hate natural hair advice. This is an overall natural hair community rant but I will be specifically talking about how natural hair advice, such as The Curly Girl Method, is toxic and has done more harm to the natural hair community than good. Next week I will be talking more about the more recent natural hair method, The 3 Step Method. But for this video, I felt as though discussing how The Curly Girl Method created a toxic environment in the natural hair community was important to address first. Hope You Enjoy!

Hi ! Chemist here with experience in fda regulations. I agree with the lady you referenced. it is on the consumer to do research. The company is there to sell you things and make money. Product Claims have to be worded in a certain way in order not to confirm or deny anything scientifically/medically. That’s why you see words like “appearance of” or “feel of.” Because they can legally set up an opinion panel of randoms off the street and ask them if they like the feel of their hair after using a product. They can then say “improves feel of hair 97%” and be completely in compliance. Edit: they can also add Trendy ingredients to their formula in such a small amount that it doesn’t change the base formula but can make a claim that it’s in there. They can slap a new label on it and that’s how they are able to stay up to date with trends. Edit #2: there are silicones that evaporate off the hair as well

oh, that is so cool. I recently applied to an FDA fellowship that had to do with cosmetic evaluation but I don't think I got it 😔 . But I totally hear you if customers didn't do their research then they could be easily scammed. It is just that some of the claims should not be allowed to be put on the packaging. It is just outrageously misleading.

Cowash is a stupid concept. Why would you wash your hair with conditioner? And how is your hair gonna get that extra moisture from conditioner when it's caked in gel?? Please. If you don't wash your hair for a long amount of time it will dry up. It doesn't matter how much conditioner or moisturiser you put in. I feel like a lot of these natural youtubers do all this extraness bc they enjoy it not bc they have to.

Maybe it’s a catch 22. Technically the market is based off of demand. We demanded products with thick butters and oils, etc. I’ve seen brands, literally say what do you want to see next from us. And ppl will say Cowash, growth oil or claywash. Very rarely ppl will say shampoo. Responsibility rests on the consumer to be aware and do some due diligence. People are not thinking and reasoning why they need this or that. It’s blind consumerism. The NH community decided to be more health conscious because of the harmful chemicals in relaxer. They took it a step further to protest traditional products that were full of crap bad for you and environment ingredients brands shifted to cruelty free, paraban free, natural fragrances etc. we hold power, the market is just a reflection of what we are demanding.

@@nappyvalley2676 i hear you. Accountability should be had on all fronts. Companies could give disclaimers or “not recommended”, I know some companies have instructions on ways to “best” use the products. It’s a suggestion though and some people don’t even follow the directions. At the end of the day it really is up to the consumer. A Cowash can have a place in a regimen. If I work out and sweat out my style a lot I may want to use a cleansing conditioner mid week but not exclusively. A shampoo multiple times a week might do a disservice. Product companies can’t really tell us what exactly to do because people lifestyle varies and they aren’t in the business of prescribing regimens, they just push products lol. TFS btw!

@@nappyvalley2676 I came to say exactly this. Brands are watching Google analytics, Instagram hashtags and yt and creating products that consumers say they want...and that is coming from what small and medium sized influences have said worked for them. Also, the power of the black consumer is growing and if they DON'T cater they sometimes get called out. MIND YOU! Salon-centric brands DO NOT follow these trends much and they work the best because they are working off of hair science (i.e. universal) principles. A salon quality brand will always have a shampoo with surfactants (whether sulfate or not) and never have a cowash or clay mask in its place! They know some silicones are easier to remove from the hair etc. Meanwhile...masstige consumer products (from black hair focused brands especially and "mainstream" [I.e. everyone else] focused brands also) do a new line with buzz words every second (looking at you, SM👀) because the goal is for you to KEEP TRYING NEW and for them to KEEP SELLING NEW. Or saying "FREE FROM ..." because we've been convinced that so many things are bad, when they're not. I get it because $$$. I just wish when correct information comes to us (which is a lot easier to verify because of how much more connected we are online to resources) we accept and adjust instead of being defensive. Faster we do that, faster brands will catch wind and provide more effective products

I’m always side eyeing these “trends” and “dos and donts ” that randomly keep coming out. My biggest point when people tell me not to use oils, butters, sulfates, clarifying shampoos or whatever is what we’re you doing before these videos started coming out and was your hair growing and thriving.... and if so why change and where did this information come from that you are following? Are they even a professional? Where is your evidence this new method works? For me I am re-developing a routine that works for my hair and honestly I don’t do what most do as a low porosity, medium to high density natural; however, my hair is growing, my ends don’t knot as much as when I was doing the most and my shedding is so minimal. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Best advice is everyone do you!

I use conditioner to detangle as prepoo sometimes because it has slip. I use prepoo (olive oil) to help detangle and minimize breakage because it has slip. I avoid combing and brushing tools and use them only once a week during washing to avoid breakage. All these practices support hair retention. It is important to know what the goal is. I focused on hair retention first. Now its hair health overall. Most of the influencers aren't experts and share what works for them and say so. But thanks for the topic, since questioning any advice and using what you can and leaving the rest applies to every are of life. Ultimately you have to find what works for you through trial and error and learning what your hair responds best too. Ive been learning for 3 years. People love to make rules that will make them money. All the youtubers I follow always have a message of "I'm not trying to sell you anything I'm just telling what I use and making content that brings me revenue, take my advice with a grain of salt." Which is how it should be.

Before they came out with all these new age hair products we used grease. I spent money on a lot of products that's supposed to be all natural and good for your hair but did nothing but dry out and cost breaking. Don't get me wrong some natural hair products are good and I do use them . But I have also added some old school products to my hair regiment. I use the World Of Curls activator gel along with thier Comb Out spray and my hair is so soft and moisturized and the products give me great slip I can comb through my hair so easily and my hair is thriving. I use to use World Of Curls back when I was rocking a Jerry Curl back in the day. People been using grease or curl activator and nobody was getting sick from using these products.

Also, most girls spend way too much time on their hair. I do not have time to spend all day on my hair. I use a shampoo my determatolist recommended, a conditioner, and a masque suggested by my dermatologist to help with the drying of the shampoo. I do not use really expensive products either. I have learned though from the KZread girls to take better care of my ends and be very gentle on my hair. Because of these two things my hair is below bra strap length within the several months I have been doing this. It is sad so many Black women are going back to perms because I feel so much better since I stopped using that chemical. Keep it up Nappy Valley and maybe people will start listening on a major level.

Like I remember when I went natural in 2010 there was barely any hair products that would cater my 4c hair and resorted to the kitchen to make masks, butters, pre-poos you guys will never experience that going natural now. Everything we need is on the shelf now. Maybe if you’re going through some type of hair issue ie breakage heat damage a little oil would be an aid to use on scalp and ends not to drenched your whole head. We definitely don’t need a hair stripping agent that you could use to clean your dishes with. There’s different types of sulfate that can cause damage to your hair hence you see sulfate free shampoo having the less harsh ingredients but still lathers. Education is essential I suggest reading The Science of Black Hair.

Now mind you, I was also “sealing” in moisture by using an oil on top of my leave in. It should come as no surprise to people with a basic understanding of hair that all that damn product build up prevented water from hydrating my hair and led to brittle dry hair prone to breakage. Because I had experienced soft hydrated hair when I first big chopped (before using a weak ass shampoo and LCO method) and never excepted when these natural hair girls would constantly say ‘natural hair is dry!’ I would big chop damn near every year because my hair would become so lifeless and dry and I knew that was not normal for me. I would blame color, too much protein, not enough protein, lack of elastin in my hair to explain my problem. This went on for years! Of course I feel dumb now that I know it was build up, I’m grieving the fact that my hair is not to my ankles by now, I have been natural since 2011 🤧. But you live and you learn, I added a clarifying shampoo to my regimen and ditched the raw oil and my hair is finally back to its normal state.

Innersense line. AG balance & boost. Look for salon quality shampoos & conditioners. Usually not sold in drugstores, but rather online. You can start off with these two mentioned above, try it out and go from there. Hope this helps :)

Who is all? I heard of the method you mention and passed. It did not make sense to me, so no thanks. On Deva Curl they have shampoo. I have used their products and been to a couple stylist that specialize in their cut/products. I have never heard not to wash you hair, that sounds crazy. Now, the co-wash thing is more for people who need to "wash" their hair mid week. Not that they do not use shampoo. As a matter of fact the stylist that I heard from and went stressed the importance on starting a wash and go or whatever on clean hair. So I think you are contributing this method to that company and that is not how their products are intended to be us.

The BlackGirlCurls/BlackCurlMagic has the exact same issues as the Curly Girl Method. Althought the Curly Girl Method was started by a white woman mainly for curly hair types (but she did also market it to anyone who didn't have straight hair so wavy and coily types). I don't think most naturals (black people with type 4 hair) followed that as religiously. Like at first, years ago, they did but then I think a lot divested from it. Now there's this new method that is just as toxic and annoying. They make rules based on what they believe to be true via anecdotal evidence. CGM was created by a singular stylist based on anecdotal evidence and a few picking and choosing of science. This new method is exactly the same. They used anecdotal evidence and picking and choosing science and also misunderstanding science. Also at 5:18 you said you don't think leave-ins were a thing until high school (idk what time that is but I'm most likely older than you). I will assume that you just never ventured into that territory of the haircare aisle. Leave-ins were a thing in "non-ethnic" (as they liked to call us for some reason) haircare since long before the natural hair movement (and therefore before the curly hair movement). The curly girl method is a sulfate free method. There are tons of non-sulfate anionic surfactants that cleanse the hair quite well and can most certainly get rid of silicones and other similar ingredients. However, if the shampoo, regardless if it has sulfates or not, is loaded with a lot of ingredients that don't wash off, it won't clarify. I think a lot of people became afraid in general to use any type of cleanser because of their fear of dryness so co-washing became incredibly popular despite sulfate free shampoos on the market. Sarah Ingle made a great video about marketing. The video is called "Is Your Shampoo a Scam? | SCIENCE vs MARKETING." You might find it interesting since you were talking about marketing in this video. I do agree that a lot of people generally do what is popular and follow what other people say you should do blindly. Hence why everyone is now saying, no oils, no, butters, no leave ins, no deep conditioning (which is basically just conditioning but I digress), etc. - very black and white thinking. Everyone is shouting the same thing and not taking anything else into consideration and also not realizing that just because something is more "efficient" doesn't mean the alternative is bad. I've never followed any method for my hair, but I did learn by watching and researching and expirmenting since I wasn't taught by my parents. My mom was literally so upset I went natural. I've never had a phase of not using shampoo, but I did "co-wash." I didn't use the conditioner on my scalp and I only "co-washed" mid week because I did cardio 6 days a week and I felt like I should at least rinse my scalp during the week. I think for the most part we're on the same page, my only argument here is just that this new phase is literally CGM 2.0 except only for kinky/coily types. I think a lot of curly non-afro-textured hair girlies still do CGM but then there are people like Manes by Mell (another youtuber) who does not agree with CGM and teaches how to care for and style curly hair. She's also very science based! Which I love. Sarah Ingle is too, but she got very ill and hasn't been producing content in over a year.

@@love-gn5zt 🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️ you're suffocating your scalp! You can use the castor oil as a hot oil treatment then wash it out with a cleansing shampoo that's not stripping then you can follow up with clarifying shampoo later. This will ensure that the castor oil properly gets washed out completely but has done its job. I prefer coconut oil though.
