Why My New Kindle (Paperwhite) Has Replaced My Other Brand of E-Reader...

Aw thanks so much I’m glad it worked out for you!! Oh man, it’s by far superior to a regular phone or tablet screen - I could never. Once you get one, it’s really hard to read any other way. I have a Kindle because I started e-reading in the late 2000s and a Kindle was far cheaper than an iPad which were my two main options to be able to trial. Also I wanted and e-reader not a tablet. I have a Fire too and I never use it for reading. Now I am so invested with the number of ebooks I have I don't even think about others unless Amazon do a really big update. I am looking forward to the day the upgrade to a colour e-ink screen. Hopefully with the note taking features of Scribe. Then I will reinvest.

Buying my kindle paper white was the best decision for me. Being older, I love being able to adjust the font and lighting. It’s difficult for me to read physical books now. Plus I love to read outdoors on my balcony. Can’t do that with Apple products…and I’m a diehard Apple girl 🤷🏻‍♀️ Only 2 things I miss on Kindle…I can’t see the size of the books and I don’t get to use my beautiful bookmarks 🫤 I bought my Kindle on Black Friday this past year. I got a heck of a deal.

As a Kobo man, Im constantly frustrated at the lack of integration it has with other apps. I’d love to highlight books and just get them straight into my notes but it’s quite a process with the kobo. Also the fact that a lot of Indie and self published books aren’t available on the kobo is extremely annoying.

I love the Kindle eReaders. I have the new basic and the Paperwhite now. I previously used the two older versions and the older version of the Oasis (son gave me his). I definitely prefer the Paperwhite and even the new basic Kindle over an Oasis. I am female and the basic is just such a comfortable size to hold and easy to put in a bag. The Oasis was a little heavy and a little bulky and the battery life is fantastic on the Paperwhite and the basic. The one thing that would make me consider a Kobo would be the fact , here in the USA, that Kobo has the built in Overdrive feature for checking out library books. We can get them for Kindle but having to use your phone or tablet is a little annoyance. Although I do sometimes purchase books, the majority of books I read are through the library Libby system and first reads on Amazon.

As a hardcore Kobo user (Glo and now Clara HD), the access to the Amazon ecosystem (mainly indie stuff) is the primary reason for me potentially switching in the future. I'd be curious to see how you feel about the Paperwhite vs Kobo's more recent model of similar form factor, the Clara 2E. The main thing keeping me on Kobo at the moment is the modding community! Definitely not for the average user as there's a learning curve but getting all my settings (cleaning up the home interface, spacings / layout, multiple side-loaded dictionaries and fonts, pop-ups for footnotes, remember more locations jumping around a book, ability to always show battery percentage, configurability of buttons for models that have them, and many other subtle things) dialed in is so satisfying. It would be hard for me to go back to a vanilla Kobo experience or be stuck with the Kindle one. If you have any questions about modding I'd be happy to help out! Props for even mentioning the Kobo, I think it's mostly us Canadians that really even know about them!

My wife’s Kobo is in perfect order but mine seems to have lost a little brightness on the screen. It honestly might have been a defect from day one that I didn’t notice because my wife’s is brighter and so is my Paperwhite - another reason I’m using the Kindle now. I would agree, if the Kobo is working, use that thing until Kindle puts out something worth the jump. Orrr you can sell the Kobo too, I think the used market is pretty good!
