Have you ever bought stock and then realized that it's not going up just after you invested in it? Or have you ever come up with situation when you didn't invest in a stock and then that stock moved up rapidly? In this video, we talk about the psychology of money and investing in stock markets and why most new investors lose money in the beginning of their journey of share market. So you can avoid those common mistakes and create wealth and achieve financial freedom early in your life.
Even Isaac Newton who was one the smartest and intelligent person in the history of humanity also lost money in stock market when he invested in South Sea Company in 1719. Isaac Newton invested a huge portion and sold early assuming there will be a market crash and then invested at high price and then finally, lost $4 million. After that, Newton never invested in stock market and forbade anyone to talk about South Sea Company in his presence.
This is why, when you invested in stock market for longterm, it is a game of investing and your aim should be to focus and simplify to just buy high quality stocks for longterm. If you think about which stock to buy, when to buy, which stock to sell, when to sell and how to do it when the markets are constantly moving rapidly, you end up making mistake as it is too much for our brain.
And if you invest in stock market for short term then you must understand an important mental model call Pari-mutuel betting system which was famously coined by Charlie Munger in his book, Poor Charlie's almanac. In this system, you bet when the odds are in your favour and you wait when they're stacked against you. We'll learn more about this but the most important lesson to create wealth in stock market is that you should focus on your own portfolio, your own stocks, your own profits and not look at others and see what others are doing.
If you buy a stock at the peak of its popularity, then you make a huge mistake. As Howard Marks says it: Investing is a popularity contest, and the most dangerous thing is to buy something at the peak of its popularity. At that point, all favorable facts and opinions are already factored into its price, and no new buyers are left to emerge.
That is why, you often hear from Warren Buffett that: Be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy when others are fearful.
