    Your browser is holding you back. Level up with Opera GX: operagx.gg/SkyBoi CORRECTIONS: - Lunar Client did not steal Replay Mod. According to the owner, they did not realize they were breaking the license. - The clip at the start IS a mod from 2010, but the video itself is a few years newer. - I left out a lot of details on how this ties into the bedrock marketplace, I genuinely didn't think to include it.

    yeah I think it was a good decision to make addons purchasable in the market place since you could already buy them through maps anyway. I dont see anything wrong with it and I think its great because it gives those creators a real good way to make money. I personally will still probably use free addons since Im not really into buying addons when I can go on Mcpedl or something similar and get a good addon for free.

    I don't get why paywalled mods even exist in the first place, why can't a patreon page be enough? Or if you want to lock your content behind a paywall, might aswell do game development and sell your own game then, since then it would be your own IP (unless you use stolen IP but that's another can of worms i'd like to not open) In short, why can't mod creators just make their content free and just have a patreon page where people can support them if they feel like it? Ofc we don't live in that world

    This video isn't clear or that well informed. 1. (most) Modders don't do it for profit, they never have and never will. Every single time modders try and make money, the mod and community suffers; see "essential" as an example, adding insane amounts of cosmetics (and spyware). 2. (most) Modders don't WANT to do it for a profit anyway, they'll be pressured to constantly updating, there'll be expectations that weren't there previously, ect. 3. Mojang is somewhat screwing over modding, but not in the way you're presenting, an example being version updates that make things very hard to port to newer versions. Mojang do a lot of work for modders, if you include datapacks modding (which you should) mojang also did tons of work with that too! I can expand on this if you want. Paid mods (usually) suck, if a dev is making mods purely for money it also usually sucks. I've never seen a paid mod even come CLOSE to the highs you can get with a passion project. + most paid mods are bait to exploit children, see bedrock marketplace. as proof of this.

  • @skyboimc

    @skyboimc

    3 ай бұрын

    1. if your point about spyware in essential is true then yeah that's a problem, but i've never seen anything about it. i don't have any issue with them selling cosmetics, there is no advantage for people who choose to buy them. 2. most modders want to do it for free, so whats stopping them? let them! i'm only advocating for the option. 3. i mentioned in the video that updating is also a struggle. i personally trust the modrinth people to do a great job handling paid mods if that became allowed, i don't think it'd end up like bedrock. thank you for your comment! im interested in your response to this.

  • @ChesterCheatin

    @ChesterCheatin

    3 ай бұрын

    @@skyboimc 1. essential sends telemetry (spying) and sells telemetry (selling to companies). Pretty sure you can disable this, but they bury it deep enough that it's just enough to justify malware. I don't like essential for that reason, and dislike it even more for its insane cosmetic prices. 2. I don't think i worded myself correctly, sorry, i'm not fully against paid mods. Donations and (very few) paid mods are fine, aslong as they're absolute quality and still being updated. (see mcmmo for recent versions as an example, just not an amazing one) having a marketplace like bedrock edition's very much opens the flood-gates to poor quality mods, misunderstandings or scams. An example is the "physics"? mod, they had a free version, which was sucky and lacked most (all) core features, and a patreon which had the actual mod. People got the mod and weren't able to run it, wanted refunds and none were given. They were not able to use the product, yet couldn't get their money back, this is something steam and most other gaming retailers offer. If we're going to put them at the same standard of pay as gamedevs, they must be held to the same responsibility. Thus a lot of legal issues come up. Orespawn as an example of greed taking over an actually amazing mod. There's a reason bedrock marketplace is so bad, because presenting the option usually ends to a lot of assholes ruining it. Mod devs everywhere have been doing it for free, and the past has shown adding a marketplace makes things shitty, so i don't see a need to add money to an artform which doesn't need one at all, and the past has proven it makes things worse.

It was especially great considering it was a passive byproduct of projects I make just for the fun of it. Oh well. The thing is, if mods are being paid, how should the cost be calculated for modpacks, should the modpack creator bear the cost? or should the player bear the cost? Let say the modpack creator bear the cost, how should the pricing be, charge by download? or a 1 time charge that cost like 1000 dollars per mod? I don't think any modpack creator is willing to pay that much for something they do as a hobby(and may not even receive much donation in return) Now what if the player bear the cost, as a player are you willing to pay 34 dollars for a modpack because the modpack creator decided to add 5 paid mods. Now let say the mod creator decided that for modpack creator they can use the mod for free, then what is stopping me to download the pack that includes the paid mod and extract said file out and use it on my own, or heck I can just made a modpack that only contain that mod and release it to the public to download for free.

All the mod maker needs to do is spend time coding something and post it. In a way the mod maker is still using the original game as a base. So to be making money off of something, using someone else's work as a base... well...

    Personally, I don’t think modding should be a business- we don’t want it ending up like the marketplace from bedrock. But modders should still get some money, the system is pretty bad tbh. Although instead of yelling at mojang- we’ve given them enough problems already- we should ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! We really need a new system. But noones making one.

    well, people tried, but, money doesn't appear out of nowhere, and there is a lot of modders. If users aren't ready to donate or subscribe to patreons or others from the creators of the mods they use and love, then we're going to keep having this problem

  • @Aleuse

    Personally, I'd consider someone opening a patreon or starting a youtube channel as someone starting their business. It's all there, the product, the branding, the ads. As long as you get any money for something you made, congrats, you did business. For me, the real problem is that if you get big enough and you don't have the "bedrock 30% cut seal of approval", you're swatted by microsoft, and for some reason they don't bat an eye at people stealing mods or redistributing minecraft and making millions off that. It's like they don't want you to work honestly, insane!

    @@gabrielv.4358 Bruh... This has to be one of the most insensitive (and frankly stupid) comments I've ever seen. "Just basic coding" what even the heck... "oh just go work at a big tech coder" as if its as easy as flipping a switch. You know literally nothing then. Do you have _any idea_ how difficult it is to get a job like that? Do you have _any idea_ how much creativity, passion, time, and effort is put into bigger mods? You're the kind of person that would pay an artist with "exposure" because you think making art is _easy_ somehow. Have you EVEN SEEN the kinds of mods that doctor4t makes??? That is in no way what I would call "simple coding." Art is not easy. Modding _is_ a form of art so long as there is passion behind it. Modding IS NOT easy, and modders deserve respect. Also... What do you mean you "don't pay for Minecraft?" You have to pay to buy an account, unless you're one of those people who used sketchy cracked accounts. Most mods are free as well, which is way cheaper than most modders deserve.

    Yeah lest we mention that Overwolf's Curseforge is not doing too well in its own rights. Not only because of the revenue issues, but one of their big ones was of possibly malicious mod reuploads on their site which caused the likes of Iris shaders and Sodium to jump ship to Modrinth because of how Curseforge's poor moderation choices to deny taking them down only for them to backpedal on the statement eventually and yet neither mod has went back to them since.

    Interesting. As a Stellaris player who recently has started delving into Minecraft a bit, its interesting to go from playing a game where the devs actively build the entire game around it being a platform that is meant to be modded overtop and actively communicate with the modder teams of big projects before they drop updates so that everyone big can have their mods ready to go on day 1 of the expansion, to playing a game where the devs hate modders. Hope Mojang pulls its head out of its rear. I have over 8k hours in Stellaris, and a good 7k of that is entirely due to mods.

    As a Minecraft mod developer myself, I resonate deeply with the points raised in this video Despite our efforts, modders struggle to earn a sustainable income. We rely on ads, Patreon, and commissions, but these sources often fall short of providing financial stability. It's kind of.. sad? I don't know the perfect word to describe it, maybe disheartening? To see platforms like Curse Forge and clients like Lunar Client profiting from our work while we struggle to make ends meet Mojang's strict rules prohibiting modders from making money exacerbate the problem. These rules hinder the growth and sustainability of the modding community. Mojang needs to reconsider its stance and allow mod developers to earn money from their hard work. It's time for fair treatment and support for the modding community The video highlights how modders struggle to make money from their creations. Even with millions of downloads, we might only earn a few hundred dollars every couple of months. It's not fair considering the time and energy we invest in our mods Mojang's rules don't help either. They make it nearly impossible for modders to earn money, while game developers and platform owners profit without any issues. It's a double standard that needs to change Modders play a huge role in keeping Minecraft exciting and fresh. Without us, the game wouldn't be as popular or enduring. It's about time Mojang recognizes our contributions and gives us the support and compensation we deserve. Mojang needs to reconsider their rules and allow mod developers to make money from their work

Now it's become this asinine world where every tsngliably related thing to a ip has to be under control of the owner and must be credited
