I honestly don't blame any med student feeling a little frickin' frustrated. Just hang in there. Even though I am only an engineer, I have some idea how much stress you go through. Just don't give up. I hope that none of you guys consider suicide as a way out of your hurts and frustrations. I know my words are no comfort.

I'm glad that they make the first two years extremely difficult instead of spreading it out. This way you can find out earlier if you cannot handle it. I know that would be my biggest fear entering med school. It's one thing if you have to drop out 1st year, but if it was spread out and 3rd year was too much for you and you had to dropout it'd be a huge waste.

I agree. I feel that handle this pressure is essential to what's ahead. It separates the wheat from the chaff. However, it's not cut and dry either. You can develop the strength and the callous, if that makes sense. You need to be able to handle this pressure. It's like an unwritten right of passage, unbearable as it is.

Michelle Telfo how does the academic pressure compare with the professional pressure though? Is it relevant? I work with extreme mental illness and can handle panic attacks and psychotic episodes but I really suck at handling the pressure of exams. I do fine, but often make silly mistakes and get way more anxious than when dealing with high pressure real world scenarios. It's different to me. Don't you think academics and "real" pressure are different? I'm starting med school in 2015 and am curious.

grubbymanz I can tell you that you are right in your assumptions. As a third year medical student, I have seen most of my class that was in the top 10% in the first two years become the bottom 50 percent in the clinical years . why? because the real world pressure from the clinical side is completely different .If you try to spit most of the knowledge you learned in the first 2 yrs at your attending physician, they will tell you most of it is not necessary and you can just look it up.I have seen a classmate who had the highest board score on step 1 in the history of the school get thrown out because he said something in appropriate in front of a patient on rotation. I I truly believe medical school is just one big fraternity/sorority with a whole bunch of legal academic hazing going on. lol

yeah, i'm not surprised, a real medical scenario vs a little case vignette on a test has about a million different factors that make it another thing entirely, mostly, a real human consciousness in front of you in real pain. It takes someone who can switch to adapt to situations, is trustworthy enough to glean good information from reticent patients, and can improvise. Nothing about the exams I'm taking now (MS1) have anything to do with these skills.

D.O. schools incorporate pt. interactions starting out in yrs. 1 & 2 as well as the 3rd & 4th yrs. Physician shadowing as a pre-med student helped me tremendously before I made the decision to pursue medicine to help me truly grasp the day-to-day of what it's actually like in a physicians life.. Great video! Pre-med students don't really have the opportunity to gain insight into the life of a medical student. I'm applying this year for D.O. school, even though I've spoken briefly with some of the students at the schools I've visited, I still feel that my perspective of medical school is still cloudy. I guess I won't know until I get there! Like you Andrea there are no physicians in my family, I'll be the first! It's exciting and scary, I really have no idea what to expect since everyone's medical school experiences vary! Thanks for the video!

I interviewed hundreds of senior med students for OB/GYN residency positions. We pretty much ignored the basic science grades - what we looked for was Honors in the clinical clerkships, especially in OB and Surgery, and recommendation letters. You didn't HAVE to have Honors, but most applicants had at least a handful of Honors grades.

Hi, Andrea! I am a medical student, from Portugal (in Europe), who just discovered your channel and is now watching your videos hoping to find advice, inspiration... Thank you for this - you sure made me feel more relieved and not alone... I am struggling just like you described. There are times when I question everything (myself included) and I just start to think that this is not what I want. It really sucks. Sometimes I hate this so much that I just feel like giving up on Medical School in particular and Sciences in general. The amount of work, study and sacrifice are huge and can often cloud our vision. I can relate a lot to you - interacting with patients and helping them are what makes Medicine for me, too. Congratulations - you're now a doctor, you made it! I wish you the best. I will continue following you here! =) Once again, thank you.

I just wanted to stop and say thank you for taking the time to say the comments that you did. I am in my first exam block second year and literally just finished saying all the things you mentioned, such as asking myself "Why am I doing this to myself? Why am I throwing my personal life away to feel mediocre (referring the the amount of material versus retention over time)?" You are right. Medical school sucks during the first two years (especially at traditional curriculum medical schools). I am hoping that once I submit the USMLE Step 1 I can regain that passion.

Curriculum reform. Definitely something to think about.I totally agree that patient contact should be encompassed into the first 2 years of med school, because sometimes I feel down while studying these pre med sciences. But once I walk into the clinic during the days that I shadow, I see exactly how what I'm learning is being applied, and that feeling totally refocuses me on why I'm taking the classes that I'm taking :D Thank you for making this video

Hi Dr. Tooley! Latecomer to your vlog but I'm enjoying the videos! Re: med school curriculum: Did your school use a pass/fail grading system in years 1 and 2? I'm wondering if that alleviates some of the anxiety med students face. I also think med schools are now trying to introduce more clinical time in the pre-clinical years to help students make the connection between the textbooks to the patient at the bedside.

If its more overwhelming than undergrad, just study harder than you did in undergrad. There are struggles everywhere-in my experience after washing out after applying to med school for 2 years, facing student loan pressures, and not finding jobs, I moved from city to city trying to learn more skills to make myself hirable. After 4 years since graduating in 2009, I regret not having a social life in undergrad because of my relentless effort to keep my grades up.

How do you encourage yourself that you won't fail? Because if we're in reality, there is a big chance, for someone applying to medical school, to fail. That's life. And for me, that gives me so much anxiety because I'd feel like I wasted much of my life, and then let's say I do get in, well there's that chance of failing the step tests. And that is nerve racking. There will always be failure anywhere, but when it comes to medical school it's a failure you literally cannot afford, so I was wondering how you cope with that stress or any tips with failure. Thank you!

I believe most med schools have a grading system. The reason why grades matter is because it affects your class rank. If you plan to pursue a competitive specialty, you want to be as strong of a candidate as possible (highest class rank, best board scores, extracurricular/research...). MS1 and MS2 are very tough years. Clerkship years are considerably better, but then you enter internship... It does get better though.

  • @bhendri31
    @bhendri3110 жыл бұрын

Grades actually don't necessarily mean much in med school unless you fail. The Step 1 is what really matters. Grades are the #1 strongest correlate with the Step 1, but correlation =/= causation. I suppose the only time grades themselves would contribute significantly to a residency app is if you were to obtain AOA through them, but other than that pre-clinical grades are paltry compared to Step 1 and clinical grades/evaluations.

My premed was pharmacy.. I'm in 1st year med now.. And med school is definitely way way harder! It was like my premed meant nothing. Hahaha. *nervous laugh :))) lol. Although, my premed comes in very handy in subjects like biochemistry, physiology... Etc. in med school there's a ton of things to take in in a very limited time. It's actually okay but the volume of everything is incredibly overwhelming that you have no choice but to study all the time well in my case.. You need to have very very good study habits and self discipline and you can't cram. You just always have to be studying and sometimes it's just too much that I wanna throw up! The coverage of a short quiz is like a semester in college. There's just so much material-- it's crazy, sometimes I think I'm going crazy! Lol. But still keeping my eye on the goal. :) Though in the end, it's not whether it's hard or not, it's whether if it's really what you want-- if you want something that bad, you can do anything, you will try to do it, and failing will not be an option. :)

You should always understand before you memorize since understanding the topic provides you with the base structure to adhere all the facts to so you can remember them long-term. Like a Christmas tree! You first build the tree and then you decorate with memorization. It's not always possible to do this but it should be your top priority. I didn't get this until later on and it did make things a lot more difficult than they should've been. This applies to any career you're pursuing. (Sometimes you may have to memorize as you go along understanding the subject. It's tricky, but it does work out in the end.)

I'm sorry for the unrelated topic, and I'll accept help from anyone, but why is Organic Chemistry considered so difficult? Is that a huge over exaggeration, or is it really as bad as everyone claims it is? Great videos, by the way.

Jackson Wells It's just unlike anything you've ever learned before. It's not like general chemistry at all, and the concepts are very abstract. You can't connect it to real life in a lot of cases, so it's hard to comprehend. But once you get the hang of it, it gets easier!

I still think 1st and 2nd year are an extremely antiquated way of teaching students. For 2 years, you're spending way too much time on low-yield bureaucratic school objectives instead of just focusing on the step itself. I think that's why people get disheartened. Unfortunately we have to live with it.

experience271 That really depends on the person. It was harder for me to get in. Once I got in, it was a lot easier and less stressful. Work is hard, but having the secure future gave me comfort and drove all the anxiety away. They probably say "hardest part is getting in" because it is true for a lot of people.

***** damn this is more depressing I think. I really love to be a doctor like my dad, but ppls comments and urs too are depressing and discouraging. Im not that clever guy that gets all A s and that shit. And tbh I shit at chemistry. So this is more depressing. I'm just confused... Whatever, thanks for replying, i appreciate it and hope u become a successful doc

Third year of med school is even worse than the 2nd is some ways. Medical school sucks all the way to the end. That said, pick your specialty wisely otherwise your entire life will suck.

Nagham Chan You need both. Memorizing to get the information in your head fast enough and understanding that will enable your to answer second and third- order questions about them

  • @rrozinak

+Nagham Chan Both. You have to memorize the terms and understand what they mean. Most of the time the understanding is easy though. It's not like understanding quantum physics. But you can't be good at biochemistry without understanding what's going on. In anatomy and embryology you need to understand how structures in human body develop and make a 4D map in your mind. But on the other hand microbiology is almost all about memorizing facts (after you understand basic principles).
