Why Max Verstappen bickers with his F1 race engineer on the radio

Max Verstappen’s latest dominant Formula 1 weekend was peppered with plenty of heated conversations with his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.
Firey exchanges between Verstappen and the man often known as ‘GP’ are nothing new, and usually brushed off as ‘banter’ that comes with their big brother-little brother relationship..
But some of the scolding of Verstappen from Lambiase at Spa felt like a new level of needle between the pair, even if it did nothing to stop Verstappen from taking another grand prix win and certainly left no lasting damage in their rock-solid relationship.
So how did Lambiase and Verstappen end up seeing things so differently, why were they on each other’s cases more at Spa and what does it tell us about why they are such a great combination?

It’s just natural. They’re passionate, serial winners in a high stress sport. A little friction during tense moments is healthy and it’s important they both feel they can speak candidly. If Max walked all over GP or vice versa, they wouldn’t find be able to extract the limits from the car. I appreciated Max’s fire to want to do better in one of the few stumbles during this season, and also GPs retort challenging him. Basically lets Max know there was no better option, they got what they needed, and to get on with the rest. Most balls on an engineer I’ve seen since Kimi was yelled out to “get the fuck out of the way” for Grosjean lol

@@matthewsmcdillThis. Being an avid and passionate mechanical watch collector for 30 plus years, I'm pretty sure Max can afford a real watch for GP after every pole and race win. A vintage Heuer pre-80s TAG acquisition proper Monaco would be great. Let's just say that TAG-Heuer is sinonimous with "more money than taste" for the past two decades. I feel truly sorry for the teams sponsored by Richard Miller and B&R. Those are far away any chance of redemption since their inception.

@@matthewsmcdill Yea, I suppose. IWC is an "entry-level" brand of the Richemont Group but they're considered a classic house of Swiss haute-horlogerie and a proper high-end luxury brand (nowhere near Vacheron, though). Tag Heuer is positioned as a very cheap luxury brand inside LVMH group, it uses of the shelf calibers and they're light years apart both in price and target audience. Tag Heuer is a classic house with literally Instagram branding now. That's why their reputation, designs, reliability and craftsmanship went down the drain in the past couple of decades. RM and B&R are meme watches through and through; you can smell "Instagram influencer" money kilometers away from anyone wearing them because their designs are tacky and gaudy as they can be. But they're more than happy to sell their time pieces for haute-horlogerie money.

I think people miss that we're only seeing 1% of the actual interactions drivers and engineers have. The other 99% is in meetings, testing, etc. where they spend hundreds of hours together per season. There's only 50 hours hours or so of actual racing per season. When you're comfortable with someone and you know they're not actually mad at you, you can be honest and say "this is bad" or "wtf are we doing here?". When Gasly was at Alpha Tauri, he and his engineer (also named Pierre) had a great relationship as well.

The “use your head” quote was likely referring to lifting through Eau Rouge due to lower ride heights. They unexplainable my gave up about a half second over the straight because they lifted there in later stints. Checo did it the whole race while max was asked to do it to keep the skids fresh enough to be legal during his second stint.

RB and Max are just on a high that is rarely seen in F1 both from a purely superior machinery/driver combination to driver and personnel combination. RB really just has the whole package right now and I don't see this era's domination going anywhere till the new 2026 regs are introduced and so much is uncertain across the whole field. More is being made of these radio messages than what's really there and I wouldn't classify it as bickering. Like it was said, these two have a long history and there relationship is very much established and just like two good longtime friends or even a marriage, arguments over the smallest of things will happen but if the foundation of the relationship is strong, as it clearly is here, it's not going to lead to anything serious and will be forgotten about quickly.

  • @randomesteven3935

Yeah. I agree with the combination part. I used to support Lewis/Nico/Merc and later Lewis/Bottas/Merc and the main thing I like watching them is that Mercedes as a whole, rarely make slip ups. They were like clockwork. And they are very consistent. But only as a team. Lewis, for the most part was consistent, and was the most consistent he had ever been his whole career but on a bad day, he could let high tensions bring him out of rhythm. Bottas was quick but not consistent at all. But Max/GP/RB18 and RB as a combination are ruthlessly a different kind of consistent. It is partly the RB18 that Max is so dominant but to deny that Max is consistently fast even on his worse day. And can we really point out a bad day for him since its close to his good day as well? Its one thing being quick over one lap, its another being quick and quicker consistent over the entire race, and that's what Verstappen is in the RB18 (as GP said the metrics are massively under control). Like a Ferrari is a good qualifier car but the RB18 and W14 are better in race trim.

I think this manner of friendly bickering is simply the best way to deal with Max. If you tell him to shut up and get on with it, it will only piss him off. If you give him too much freedom, he'll start feeling too dominant within the team. But these kind of sarcastic comments, subtly reminding him it's a team game and he doesn't know everything, it helps balance the situation by telling Max off without making him angry about it. Max even responded in kind later, when he was asked about the weather situation and said 'well i cant see the radars can i'.

Not too sure about the reasons why First stint, Checo was lifting but Max wasn't. Middle stint, Max starts to lift off potentially after the 'Use your head' command from GP Worth looking into! RBs probably had even more pace in them !

Personally I have to say it´s funny people only now slowly start to notice how these two handle each other. It´s been like this for years and *no* it´s not all fun and games. GP is a solid Engineer and personality and possibly one of the few engineers on the grid that would actually work with Verstappen, further yet he actually adds to the equation because he isn´t scared to even tell Max he ''was'' being childish back in the really early days. And even under current conditions where Max is breaking records GP talks back to Max. A dynamic we don't always see in a winning combo of driver + engineer. Though to be honest Max still does his own thing regardless.

I remember a conversation during a race in which Max Verstappen doubted a team order from GP. Gianpiero Lambiase: "Max, if you have all the information we have here at the pit wall, then tell us what we should do now". Max fell silent and carried out the orders... 😃 These two are a match made in heaven. No wonder GP appeared two times beside Max on the podium this year.

I feel like people are drumming up the issue especially after that whole controversy involving Max and Checo in Brazil even though both cases are different. Max has only ever been Checo's teammate since 2021 while GP has been with Max from the start. Even from there it is easy to tell that it will take a lot more than just radio messages to break a relationship.
