I want to push back against something you said in this video. You said that if you died tomorrow, nothing you've shot would live on after you. I think that's entirely untrue. Sean made this video 4 years ago. Today I am 74 years old. I am definitely a better photographer today than I was 4 years ago. In that time, I have created many images of which I am proud. Listening to Sean here and elsewhere, I am almost happy that I am not 20, or 40, or even 50 years old. I have the privilege of saying I will never become a Master or I will never master photography, because there simply is not enough time. But I can always get better, always improve my skills, always take photos that will please me and I never have to stop doing any of these things until I have to stop.

It is a bliss to look at the same place, Iceland from two different perspectives. Peter McKinnon's version would make you want to just go and run around the entire place doing crazy things. Your version, however, would make one to wish to go there and meditate. It is a testament how staying true to your own reflects a different kind of beauty. Same Iceland, two perspectives. My version resonates with you. I wish i could collect enough money soon to travel there alone. Happy birthday Sean (belated). Thank you for all the valuable lessons you have passed. Pete Mac is a lot of fun to watch, but he's the epitome of the modern social media savant (it helps that he specializes in visual content through videography/photography), who appears perfect and shows off his lifestyle. Sean is much more human, relatable and real to me. He's a mentor, therapist, and older brother all rolled into one and I think that's what we really need right now with all the emotional/psychological collateral of living in a digital age.

Even if it means one video per month. Secondly, i like what Peter McKinnon does. It has its own entertainment value. I like that channel for it. Respect yo your opinion as well. :)

This one got me choked up. I started five years ago and have watched hours and hours of youtube videos, teaching myself the camera. I've always wanted to travel for a year (at 40) so I decided to sell all my belongings and live out of a backpack. I wanted to use this time to get better at my photography. I got on the road and realized I had no idea what i was doing, but I went for it anyways. I still wasn't confident in the camera but I fell in love with it. I met so many amazing people on this journey and my year-long trip turned into a photo project. When I got home, I became depressed, my health suffered, and realized I was suffering from post-travel blues. I wanted to be back in the world practicing my photography and not sitting in some office job. I packed up all my stuff again this year and moved to London, Ontario, Canada. I am now in my third month of Photography school and I love it. Thank you for your words. They are inspiring and motivating. *tears*

I see photography as Sean's vehicle to serve his greatness to the world. Much of his work, IMHO, is already great; and some of that is attributed to who he is and who he's evolving into. As a photography hobbyist, I would humbly settle for 1/2 of his skill and talent. But, that's for me. Undoubtedly for Sean, 100% is a fleeting goal...and to pursue that fleeting goal is one of the ingredients that shapes greatness. Sean's channel is helping me shape mine. I sincerely hope he views that as a complement. Be well.

You caught me off guard with this video, Sean. Wasn't expecting such an introspective look inside Sean's struggles, failures, successes, efforts and dedication to become the successful photographer he hopes he can be. Very refreshing video. don't underestimate what you do on this channel ever again. maybe these videos not watched by millions but those who watches your videos really appreciate your perspective on photography and how to get better at it. no other photography channel made me watch the same video over and over again. you are doing a fantastic job, just keep talking, we love it.

Sean, I know this video is a year old, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos on KZread. When one of your videos show up in my feed, it puts a smile on my face because each one is created carefully and masterfully. It is my moment of meditation and reflection I look forward to each day.

I don't know if you ever read new comments to old videos, but I do want to tell you that your past with helping animals in need and being a priest.... you are still those things. They have shaped who you are and it shows through your videos. I'm 55 years old, just started learning photography a few years ago. Patience is the best gear I have in my bag. Keep walking.

I'm turning 68 in November. I worked as a portrait photographer for 8 years during the 80's (Film days), but left when I found my calling as a genealogist for 30+ years. In my retirement, my youngest daughter is just starting to learn photography and that has peaked a new interest in better learning of the digital equipment. I had dabbled in some photo restoration using photo shop and enjoyed that. Your video has convinced me to invest in some new equipment that I can use and share with my daughter. Another step forward in my life...

Just getting started at 40. Good on ya Sean. I'm just getting started at 63. May God direct our journeys. :-)

Sean, totally agree. Your self-awareness is the key to mastery. One distinct quality between an extremely competent professional and a true master, is that the master acknowledges he/she does not have all the answers, yet people flock to the person in search of them !

Besides your philosophies and photography, you wanting to save and rehabilitate animals is enough for me to admire you even more.

This really hits home. As a Recording Engineer/Producer for almost 7 years now I still feel like I have so much to learn. As well as a hobbyist photography for only 3 years I still dance with the idea of going full time but unsure of my skill set. But the precious concept is that," If I'm learning, I'm not failing" is what motivates me everyday. Just as you said, I'm better than the version of my self of yesterday. Brilliant video!

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and while I was undergoing the phase of "Why Me" & the Regrets, I came to understand that whatever I had done till that point in my Corporate career, the results the numbers none of that mattered at all. I was as replaceable as an office stapler. And that was a really hollow, dark yet life-changing revelation. But during my recovery, someone told me how one of my images moved him & inspired him to get out more and travel...... to question his life. That my image had changed someone's life! And since then life has never been the same and I am pursuing photography with a passion that I never thought I had in me. You are inspiring thousands almost every day and if that is not an accomplishment, I don't know what is! Happy Birthday Sean and thank you!

Sean I agree with a great deal of comments below. You have already left a tremendous memory behind, in a world of overly edited and fast paced infotainment you stand out amoungst the maddening clutter far more than you realise. You might not have taken a photo that I'll remember forever but when I take photos your voice is there all the time that is your legacy already. Your videos inspires, slows people down to a manageble pace, you reactivate the voice of reason in folks. The therapist, preacher and empathic wildlife lover in you have molded you into the perfect counter balance on youtube. As a fellow South African you make us proud!

Time at home has given me a great chance for introspection. I have been studying in Uni for the past 6 years, struggling greatly throughout it all, constantly needing to convince myself that this is where I belong. All the while I just keep dreaming about my other ambitions and ideas. Each time I want to leave Uni behind, I tell myself I can't because I'm already this far into it, and it would derail me off my path. I like what you said at the beginning about how your path seemed unfocused, but why that might not be such a bad thing. I know this is true, but it's so hard to accept while I'm living in the moment. From the pulpit to the photographer, a powerful motivational pitch. There are few photographers out there who are prepared to ‘reveal’ themselves, in such a way. A refreshingly honest and inspirational reflection.

You might say of yourself that you do not belong to the top world photographers, but I for myself look up to your skill and you encourage me to take photos in my free time whenever I can. To reach your skill and level.

Once i read that it needs 10.000 hours in something to master it to be a professional. This means at least 3-5 years as a fulltime experience. And even beyond this scale, there will always be room to improve, to try something new and most importantly to learn from others. Learning from by studying the grand master of photography, exchanging experiences with others, who struggle in the same way as we do. I am very thankful right now for your videos, which i just recently found, because i am in a situation, where i find myself in all of this thoughts. Right now i am working on my master thesis in the field of photography, building a concept for a strong story and a growing knowledge about, what i am about to do. And that will be photographing dying people in a hospice. I am really scared because of the topic and my self burdened pressure of taking good photos. I know that i am not a very good photographer, but i am interested in people, humanity and emotions. And even if everything else fails, and even if i will not be able to have shoot at least one good picture, there will be this whole time of meeting people, sharing experiences about life and decisions and i am really looking forward to this. Your Videos have helped me to find the confidence in ongoing with this project and to be more open minded, less perfectionistic about things and trying to enjoy what i am doing. In a world that is looking for "10 hacks to make you a great photographer" not a very popular message, but obviously it is so true. Very good thoughts throughout the video.

It was in the beginning, but now I want to hear you talk about life more than anything. I want to hear your perspective and see how you learn from your story and own it. Since taking up photography about 3 years ago (at 61), I've been concentrating on it like a college student crams for an exam. I've taken several classes, gone on photo walks, joined a couple of organizations, watched countless hours of KZread and other videos, read books - and taken thousands of photographs. I don't expect to ever achieve greatness (hadn't even really considered it) or fame. Loving what I'm doing and sometimes sharing it is enough as long as I keep growing. I love what you do and appreciate how very different it is from what I do. I'm sorry for your wife's loss and glad that you decided to share your birthday with us.

Honesty and humility are both authentic and special qualities which seem to characterise your videos.

Never realized you had a psychology background which now makes sense with how thoughtful and insightful your videos are. Love that you speak about more than just what camera to buy or what settings to use. I started photography a year ago and have come a long way. Excited to see where it goes over the next year! 48 and startling this journey. I taught English before because one doesn’t get paid for poetry (MFA grad here). The teaching path was over and I took a course in Photography this year. I loved it though I was so daunted by things in learning it. And then I am glad to have found your videos on Photography KZread.

I agree wholeheartedly - in most instances. But I will say you're not in the target group for his misogyny. So the gut flipping fear that happens when he says women should be given to men as sex slaves to stop violence against women isn't something you would experience. He makes my skin crawl in ways I hope you never have to experience. He is not a good man. I can't not saying anything in order to play nice. Skipping over such distasteful comments allows them to take root. I cannot walk past and accept his 'wisdom' just because I have respect for you. I will not. He is evil. There is no wisdom to be had there.

I'm sure you are aware of this , but I'm saying it anyways. What you do is very unique. I'd go as far as to say this is primarily NOT a photography channel , but some sort of philosophical experience. And I love it. Thanks for that.

Happy Birthday, 40 years will always be a landmark in a humans life, maybe one of the reasons why you give us your ideas about life in general. I am 66 years old and retired from my trade of being a cabinet maker. I have always learned new things about my trade, from the beginning to last year, it has always been a challenge in my work. It's simple, I never did the same furniture for different people, and most of the time different furniture for the same person. Always in a "mode" adaptive, using of course my experience to deal with every day tasks. For the greatness, I will never think of myself is a master craftsman in my trade, too much to learn and absorb while you continue. I guess now that I have to wait another 10 or 20 years to start to be satisfied and proud of my photography. I hope that you had a nice week in Iceland despite the circumstances. By the way, this video is really nicely done and beautiful. bon vent...

Sean - I watch several KZread channels about photography. Each for different reasons. One for equipment reviews, one to help me hone my composition skills, another for photo ideas. Your site is where i go to help me thru the mental side of photography. Yes, believe it or not, there is a proper mindset that is needed to continue the long journey to becoming a skilled artist. When I see that you have posted a new video I find a quiet place, sit and relax and watch it intently because I know I will come away with my mindset recharged and I will be inspired to work more to develop my passion. Sean Tucker, I recently posted a comment on your video about scripting your videos. There, I stated that I share a part of my past working for a church and commented that my experience was a bit unlike yours because I left disheartened, thinking your experience was positive. After viewing this video, and your admission for the reason you left your career path in the church, it seems our stories may be more similar than I realized. Anyway, and again, your openness is appreciated. Benediction moment now... Wishing you the best moving forward in your endeavors. Some of us are listening and appreciate authenticity.

I became addicted to opioids immediately after high school and spent seven long years going nowhere. I’m 28 now. I’ve been clean for two and a half years now but I’m still having to deal with that massive setback, mainly in the form of the financial burden of paying for ongoing treatment. I’ve just recently gotten into photography and filmmaking and I’m going to try my absolute hardest to get to a point at which I can earn my living and support my family solely through photo and video work. I know it’s going to take time and be very difficult but I also know exactly what going nowhere is like and I’ll do everything I can to avoid it. Thank you for another great video, Sean.

Sean, I want to thank you for this video. I'm a good bit older than you, but like you, started in one career out of school (accounting and finance), attended seminary and became a deacon/school teacher in my Church, and eventually left the Church due to my own beliefs becoming irreconcilable with the Church's doctrines and practices. Now as I approach my 60th birthday, photography has become a passion of mine, albeit an unpaid one, and the process of exploring the world and sharing that exploration through the taking of pictures continues to be thrilling. Unlike many who approach retirement with the thought that life will become routine and boring, I look forward to having more time to learn and do more in this arena.

I listened to your video and you can NEVER give up no matter how much you doubt yourself. Life is a journey, not a destination. It requires a lot of hard work. Persistence Wins the Race!

The apreciation of change is one of the most beautiful thing, it relieves us from regret and gives great great calmness. It cant do nothing though to make us stop feeling empty.

Happy Birthday Sean! I'm a teacher and father of two boys. I'm a few years older in the milestone table but couldn't agree more. I'm going to show this video to my boys (when they get a bit older) and my students. I see so many of them getting frustrated and give up with everything because they don't see the results they want straight away. I try to tell them this same thing. Photography is my hobby that I got back into a few years ago but its also a mind-set that I've learnt from other areas such as drawing and painting. I've learnt more from what I don't want to do than the things I thought I wanted. That's part of the fun. The journey of learning what others see as mastery or even just competence is sometimes more satisfaction than the competence itself. I know what I do will likely never be in a gallery but that's not why I do it. I know the implications of it being your job has a different consequence but I think the message is the same.

I am 49 this year. Only this year I've decided to pursue my dream after my 2 children leaving the nest. Understand that I have a lot to learn about photography. Thank you for your inspiring vid Sean. Take Care.

This has received so many comments! In this journey of ups and downs, we tend to contrast ups with downs to make them stand out as such. This is okay as long as we look at these playfully. The playfulness does not delay any potential success. It makes the journey less stressful. Stress is not caused by shadows in our lives, it is caused by our lack of playfulness in the face of shadows. This playfulness naturally preserves highlights. The movie 'A Beautiful Mind' (2001) exemplifies this. I consider a serious (non-playful) mind to display more superficiality than a light-hearted mind. The depth of the ocean easily copes with the dramas of any waves. We do not need to prove that we are heroes, not even psychologically. Let's have the courage to be ordinary. This will allow the depth of the ocean to take over. Any achievements from then on are attributed to the ocean, not to a wave that we used to identify with. Looking through a camera is a constant reward in itself. This looking itself is usually overlooked. You call it 'presence' somewhere. This presence is more rewarding and closer than any particular outcome, be it a photo or anything else. In my set of definitions, to be 'empowered' is to sense that presence. By the way, I agree with all those comments that state that many of your images are fantastic.

What I love about these inspirational videos is how genuine they are. I can't listen to professional "motivational speakers" because it just feels like they're bullshitting you or trying to sell you something. You can tell Sean speaks from the heart and I think it makes his advice so much more valuable.
