Why Making More Money ISN'T The Answer with Lynne Twist

Lynne Twist’s “The Soul of Money” sparked a conversation we needed to have. It didn’t make people think “how do I make more money,” instead it asked, “what world am I making with the money I have?” For decades, Lynne has been fundraising for charities and causes around the globe. From ending world hunger to fighting for the climate, she’s made sure that her dollars are best put to use, helping the most people she can with the money she makes.
Lynne’s rock-solid financial sense came from an unusual background. Her mother was raised well-off, but her family’s wealth came crashing down when they were forced to flee the home abroad they had made for themselves. Then, when Lynne’s father died, her mother became increasingly frugal, but for a good reason. Lynne’s mother wanted to use her money to give, not get, making every cent count in the budget. Later in life, Lynne and her husband lost a massive portion of their wealth, forcing her to ask the question-why pursue riches in the first place?
On today’s show, we have a lively discussion on the toxic money culture that has enveloped American society, why financial independence is worth pursuing, and what those with much can do to help those with so little. Lynne’s take on wealth-building opens up a refreshing debate among early retirees and forces you to ask “why” instead of “how” when it comes to making money. Tune in, and be sure to check out Lynne’s new book, “Living a Committed Life"!

She's right the earth is full of things that will help us solve world hunger...The problem is that people stopped finding their worth and identity in God, and now they find it in themselves or other's that will always let them down. So, we are losing the soul of our nation because it's no longer rooted in God, which will give us the scarcity mindset much faster. You could argue that our faith never was the soul of our nation, but there has always been a strong presence of those who do believe. We will only find sufficiency in Christ. My goal is to be financially free so, I can focus on other things that will help other's, like helping foster children or the lack of housing for the homeless. This is a great topic, and FIRE is one way I am using to fulfill my true purpose.

I do not want more, getting older I want less, I am 58 and getting rid of stuff. I also want to work less even though I will have to work until I can't physically work. 🤷‍♀️ I agree with your guest speaker 100 percent.

You are spot on re the absolute ignorance nationwide re money literacy. Despite how obsessed people are with getting money they don't have a clue how to earn it in ways that are not destructive, how to grow it and how to maintain it without continuing to be obsessed about it. I mentioned this once at my bank re financial illiteracy and was told they were teaching classes at the local high school doing just that. I don't know if they are continuing to do it, but every bank should be required to. That's something Bigger Pockets should get behind. I wish I had been taught as a child.

What she speaks of is so common in early adulthood. For me, I grew up so poor that I felt I had to catch up enjoying the things I didn’t when I was younger. I remained single and helped bail out other family members. Now after a few illnesses and in my 50s, I’m going to continue to save for retirement and travel a bit. I did achieve owning my home. Drive an 11 year old car that is in great condition.I do fear job stability though I’m a healthcare professional due to age, being female and a minority

This is a great speech to make to the 1%, and maybe those aspiring to be part of the 1%. Not sure it's helpful to anyone else.

We'll this is something we all need to hear regardless of your financial situation. Those who don't have may have an obsession with money just as much as someone who already has money and fear they'll never have enough or will lose it.

It’s difficult for me to understand how people could listen to this podcast and only have negative things to say about it. She’s basically saying that she’s had it all, she’s gotten caught up in keeping up with the Jones’s, and realized that there is no end to that and ultimately no fulfillment. She’s found freedom in lifting other people up and that financial freedom is a vehicle for finding your unique contribution for the world. How is this controversial?

Of course making more money isn’t the answer when you’ve been handed down money and then marry into money …. And lose Millions and still be ok …

I wonder how much money she thinks is too much to have. My guess is $1.00 more than what she has.
