After I published my first impression video on the Panasonic Lumix S9, I received an email from Lumix USA disagreeing with my points. At the end of the email l was told I have forgotten to "have fun" in photography and just obsess about camera specifications. So, in this video response, I shall explain why their original GM1 was MORE fun than the new S9.

    You can say a lot of things about me - I am biased, I am a bad photographer/my photography sucks, my reviews are not good, I don't know how to use a camera (yes these things have been said about me multiple times) I don't care really. You are entitled to your own opinion. However, to go that one step further and say I have forgotten how to have fun shooting, or don't know how to enjoy photography, that, I think is quite unforgiveable.

    I don't really understand the the S9, if the target audience doesn't care about specs why make it full frame? Thanks for the show of faith. However, the S9 was created for content creators/influencers, so they did get their target right the first round. It was not designed for photographers, so I am not the right fit honestly, and that is fine. What was not fine, was people telling me I don't know how to have fun. Hence this video.

    I am the target audience for the S9. I'm looking for a camera that is the spiritual successor to my GX1 and Pen Lite and Pen Mini cameras in terms of size, performance and fun. The S9 isn't that camera. I have significant investment in m4/3 cameras and kit and want continuity with that. The lack of an EVF is also a deal-breaker - I can't use a back display without wearing glasses but can use an EVF (I have the GX1 EVF) or the OVF on my DSLR. Really disappointed with the S9. My photography is all about enjoying the process, can't see that happening with the (also expensive) S9. A new m4/3 body in the form factor of the GM1/5 would be me.

    We are living in a world where constructive criticism is not acceptable? Sad state! If Panasonic needs to justify their design and lack of features by gaslighting people, they need to reconsider their marketing. When the S9 came out, it was a disaster. from the people they invited out to Japan to promote the camera to the actual camera. If they are worried of about people having fun and telling people that features don't matter, they should have just released a smartphone. Only thing we can do is not buy the S9. Nothing wrong with walking away, there are so many better cameras out there! Sorry Robin they treated you like that. Keep smiling and having fun! "LETS DO THIS!"

I recently read a restaurant review by one of the most prominent food critics in the UK, and after he savaged one extortionately expensive place, the company whose restaurant it was got in touch to offer him a fully paid meal "in exchange for coverage". I have both the GM1 as well as a Pentax Q-S1 (aka the two smallest interchangeable lens cameras). The super tiny lenses in the Q system are spectacularly fun too. While I kind of have to force myself to carry 1 to 1.5kg of camera with me like with my Nikon Z6 (for some reason I even prefer carrying my E-M1 III every day over that) despite it objectively shooting better photos.

    I also have a GM1 and find it super fun to use. Would have loved to see a new micro 4/3 body like an updated GM1, GM5 or GX9 (or even a LX100 iii) instead of this S9, and I think a lot of people were hoping for the same. I find the S9 cute, but once you look at the lenses, much bigger that the body (where will you find a comparable lens like the 35-100mm with variable aperture and so compact from Panasonic itself, for example?), you soon loose the interest. Also, good luck shooting comfortably if the sun is shining bright outside without an EVF. And that price… ouch. If I wanted a small full frame camera, I think I would pick the Sony A7C ii or R instead.

    I think hot shoe mount and maybe evf were the 2 main missing features. being able to transfer quick videos to your phone in a small factor seems to be the best benefit of this one!

    When people criticise what I say without understanding, I thank them for their comments, and suggest that they have missed the point I was making. With this fellow from Panasonic, I would probably add that you had actually been talking about which would be more fun for a photographer rather than a content creator. You could also comment that there has been a fairly widespread negative response among photographers to the S9, and, as a couple of charming ladies told me many years ago about apologising too much, "When everyone is telling you something, maybe you should pay attention." He must just have a niche sense of fun. Thanks for the enthusiasm of your video reviews.

    Weird argument by that e-mailer. I don't think people who are smartphone photo enthusiasts would splash out 1500 or more for a full frame camera.

  • @paul_boddie

    It isn't even smartphone photo enthusiasts that they're targeting with the S9, either. It's the content producer demographic. But many of them went for the Sony ZV-1, judging by random remarks one hears when some of those people are asked about their cameras. That's a 1-inch sensor model that is half the price of the S9, which means that the target audience would really need to see quite a few practical benefits to justify the outlay. Then again, maybe there are plenty of influencers taking dirty money who could happily drop over $1500 to play around with a camera that doesn't even have a hot shoe.

    Your videos are always a joy to watch. The enthusiasm and passion from your reviews cannot be matched. I was curious about the S9, but it seems that Pana has kinda lost the plot with this one. M4/3 will always be unique because of it's size, and as far as I am concerned leaps better than phone cameras.

    Love your videos Robin, that was a massive PR fail from Panasonic USA. Panasonic Lumix if you are seeing this, for exactly the SAME price, if I could buy an 11yo Lumix GM1 brand new vs a brand new Lumix S9, my heard and wallet would go for the GM1, if that’s not clear enough how much you have missed the point.

    Maybe there are video content creators for whom the S9 is a good choice, but I agree with you, that the S9 is not a great choice for still photographers. I can have a lot of fun with cameras with smaller sensors, EVFs, hot shoes, flashes and mechanical shutters that cost half of what an S9 costs. As a stills photographer, the S9 has no appeal for me over my GM1, GX9, G9 or S5.

  • @yaupie
    @yaupie3 күн бұрын

    Cameras with electronic shutter only like Nikon's Z9 and Z8 can sync with flashes possibly because they use stacked sensor. The sensor in Panasonic S9 is possibly a non-stacked type so have difficulty syncing with flashes (using electronic shutter). So I think if there will be a S9 mark II with mechanical shutter added, it will have the proper hot shoe as well.

    Well if you ever had any questions Robin about how influential your channel might be.. well you poked the bear,, and it sounds like the bear growled back! This is a great comparison that shows that the people who originally bought into MFT did so because of the compact size and the great quality they could get from those small cameras and lenses. I do love that both Panasonic and OM System are pushing the envelope with these MAX cameras.. that's how new features and hardware gets invented.. now they need to figure out how to trickle those incredible features into a more compact body fitting the lens profiles.. not every camera released has to be a cutting edge product.
