Why Latino Dads Don't Say "I Love You" | ON PAPER EP. 1 - mitu

Things got emotional when we sat down to talk to 3 dads and 3 sons about why it is that they don't tell each other "I love you." What are your thoughts on this?

jackie2011jr agreed, everything just seems more powerful in Spanish to me. Maybe it's just because it's the first language I learned, the language I've grown up around, the language my name is called in, and the language people tell me they love me in but I just know it's a language with a big emphasis on emotion.

Once he got older I think I heard him tell me 5 times he loved me. My evil aunt took my grandpa away from us and I didn't get to say goodbye when he passed away. 💔 always tell anyone you live that you love them. They will live with that forever. Thank you again for your service.

My dad didn't call me by my first name until I was 16. He always just called me "Boy" as in "Get up Boy, we're mowing the lawn" or "Come on Boy, we're checking the oil in your mom's car" I am the oldest and I never knew why he treated me different than my brother and sister. When I was 16, I woke up to use the restroom and realized that that it had froze the night before. I woke up early the next day to scrape off the ice from everyone's car so we could go to work/school. I was eating breakfast when my dad went out with the scraper.....he came back in, put the scraper by the door, and said "Good work Jack." Still one of my favorite dad/son moments. Mexican dad's don't say "I love you" but they let you know it in subtle ways yo.......

Many mexican fathers had a hard life and grew up dirt poor. Their parents never told them that they loved them. A lot of fathers don’t say this because they never knew what that felt like. It’s important you become aware of it though and tell your loved ones these words to let them know because you may never get another chance to do it. Like many things, death is unpredictable so it’s best to do it while we’re still alive and breathing.

I grew up without my dad and only my mom to guide me. I didn’t know most of the things that fathers are supposed to teach their kids. Today, I have a little 7 year old son and a 10 month old baby girl with another in the belly. I constantly struggle asking myself, “am I doing this right or enough?” I let my kids know I love them everyday so they grow up to be better than me and not make the same mistakes I had done. I’m sitting in my car outside my home before I go in to wipe my tears and put on a smile cause I want my kids to know that I’ll always love them for the rest my of my life. I go back to this video every now and then to remind myself not to be emotionless and to love forever.

When I tell my dad "Te quiero 'apá" he just says "igualmente" 😂. From little to teenage years I always wore hand-me-downs. When I went into highschool I asked him for a new pair of jeans and he said ok. Next day he told me to go with him, I thought he was taking me to the mall but no, he took me to work with him (he is a handyman). He took me for a week and then he paid me, he said "Toma, te has ganado tu dinero para los jeans". Best life lesson I had. Love him to death for showing me how to work. He has never personally told me but my family says that he tells them I'm still his little girl, I'm 38 now.

He is the strongest and most loving man that I know. I have been blessed in having him as my dad. He tells my kids and me that he loves us every chance he gets. So people tell your friends and family how you feel. We might not get the chance later because tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

I come back two years later to write an enlightening comment. I am a daughter of a Mexican dad... he may have not said "I love you" all the time but he taught me real love without saying it. My dad and mom both taught me and older siblings how to love, for that I'm forever grateful. I'm blessed to have such example, who taught us tough love and how to handle life with faith. I see the example on my parents to my grandparents. I'm blessed because we might not say I love you everyday, but I work hard to show them how much I love them and appreciate both my mom and dad ❤

This is a hard topic. I’m about to watch the video but can definitely say, that as a Hispanic young woman, I wish my mom would be more encouraging, supportive, and actively listen to me when I speak. We get into so many arguments over her poor listening/communication skills, and we hardly say “I love you” to each other.

Don’t have any regrets mija do your very best to have that relationship with your mom even if you have to put your pride aside cause both my mom and dad are gone and I wish I could do it all over again.

The ones that dont say it are the ones that love you the most. Sometimes we forget to say it because we like to think our actions speak louder than words. Sometimes people have lied to us and used up words to the point where we think they are meaningless and rather show than say. But we forget how words still mean something to others.

Damn, this got me good. My dad was raised in LA and never was close with my Grandpa. He went into the Marines at 17 and I wonder a lot if that's why he's always been the Unemotional type or because my Grandpa was too hard on him? But probably both. Thankfully, I grew up close to both of them. My Grandpa died almost 4 years ago and I think it's softened him up significantly ❤️. The last time I recall my Pa saying he's Proud of me was almost 2 years ago when I got my Barber's license. It was over the phone as I'm near Sacramento. I was surprised but I think what's important here is as sons (or daughters) we Know that they Love us even though they don't express it verbally. Or not often enough. But just hearing those words, I Love You can save Years of Hurt, Self-Doubt, Anger etc. This is a very much a Cultural issue, but Everyone needs to know that they are loved by their parents. Especially our Fathers. I think that all of the Padres did an Excellent job raising their sons, they all have a lot of Character and Personal Strength, Dignity too. I'm happy I came across this 🥲

In my teens/twenties I questioned whether my father loved or cared about me….. a man of few words but mighty by actions. Now that I’ve grown a bit more i realized that he showed his love and affection by actions and not words. He’s a bit older and has opened up quite a bit. Would have loved to have that communication earlier in life but glad that we have it now. Grateful for that. Now i have the task of modeling for my boys. I hope to do right by them and help guide them in life… best wishes to all the fathers out there. Peace and love

My Latino dad didn’t say I love you to me or my siblings growing up (I’m almost 40) but he sure does say it to my babies (who are now 8&9) and has ever since their births. They softened him and he wants to make sure they know exactly how he feels about them every single day until the day he dies and I couldn’t be more grateful. It melts my heart. My father adores us but got into the habit of not saying it so we didn’t say it either as we grew up. We don’t hug usually but recently we’ve gotten much closer and I’d like to thank the kids for that. They brought us all together. I made sure when I had kids to shower them with the I love you’s and break that cycle.... and because my dad says it to them too now they get even more love. Life is good!

Now that we are grown and adults and our dad a bit older, we have had a chance to speak from the heart and express what we always wanted from him as two little girls. Now, that my parents had our little brother, my father is very loving and affectionate. He is not repeating mistakes and has placed great effort to be a better loving dad. I am soo proud of him. I’m in tears because I know how hard it is for them to show that love. It’s just how they were raised but that love was always there.

@@efrain.g8778 they're children that grow up never knowing affection from their father it's not until you're a man you realize what they've done for you but still to that point a father should be supportive and somewhat loving to their child

I didn't grow up with a father, he left when i was a newborn. My mother was both parents to me. This video screams to me that my mom was exactly like these men. I lost my mom 3 days ago, we weren't in speaking terms, this video was hard to watch, but it's a bittersweet video that i can totally relate to. Happy father's day to all the amazing men out there. Y que en paz descanses mami, te querre para siempre... -Isa

My father just passed away on 7/31/21 he would have been 77 on 8/24, he was an immigrant that came to the USA and fell in love with the country!! Once we came to the USA he dedicated his life to family life and told us he loved us all the time!! We are a very close family and are so happy and proud to have had a wonderful man for a father!! He was a good husband and a wonderful loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. GOD gave him the grace to see his descendants to the fourth generation and loved every single one of his grandkids and great grandkids, his legacy lives on as long as he is remembered and loved by his descendants!! Papá Martín we love and miss you so much, thanks for being a great father!!

My dad and I have a very strong bond, I was the “favorite”. My father would give me all these hugs and kisses before he would leave for work and I always accepted them. My fathers way of showing affection is through actions and things like “Eres tan fea que rompiste el espejo” which seem mean but I know he wouldn’t mean it. I always “insulted” him back and laughed while my siblings would get angry and start to cry. So when I started to laugh my dad and i would always do it. Our bond didn’t grow with “I love you”, it grew with actions and little things like that. Even if my dad bought me a concha from el mercado I would alway thank him and be happy for the rest of the day. So I can see why my dad is like this toward me.
