Why Large Age Gap Relationships Can Feel Gross

Is age just a number? Using celebrities, TV, and pop culture, Brad Gage digs into the psychology of age-gap relationships, why older men and younger women are attracted to each other, how it can sometimes result in an unequal power dynamic, and what can be done to help these relationships thrive.
Includes analysis of age-gap May-December romances, Evolution Theory, Gender Roles, "Daddy Issues", plus Dane Cook and Jerry Seinfeld dating teenagers. It'll all make sense when you watch it.

Excellent & well done video/talk. I am 20 years elder to my 40 yr girlfriend. Its a beautiful relationship. But theres so much more to such relationships. Theres an emotional evolvement happening at the younger age of say 18 to 25. And its important for a man to understand this well. Quite often this doesn't happen & thats probably very detrimental to the younger partner.

I am 24, I am using dating sites where I get request from older men 40+ , they don't want children but in their profile it's mentioned, prefer partner age 18-27. This age 18-27 is an age where female in their prime fertility. If these men aren't looking for children, why do they want women in that age group? They can search 35+ . I agree with the psychological aspects of an age gap. As a sociologist, I believe this moderne times with our vast bombardment from social media, turns people (young men) goals and desires outwards than inward. People know more about who the Kardashians are than the basic knowledge of the dynamics in their own psyche. The presentation and illusion of the sexy and wealthy from social media, has not just alienated people from each other but also from themselves. More to say... maybe later. I hope more people will make honest and critical videos as yours. Good job 👍

To answer the question: Because it comes off as predatory. It's assumed the older man is chasing the younger girl because she's supposedly less experienced, more naive, and thus easier to assert dominance over and manipulate. Now, there are guys who ate with someone younger for more wholesome reasons. But, I think more often than not; it's the former. If you think it's creepy here. You should see Japan.

Often times it is predatory. I fell into this trap as a freshman in college and he stalked me for a year after the abusive relationship. He was crusty and too old, I stayed with him because I had no other people there and sometimes even needed food and clothes. He would make me cancel college events to hang out with him, I'd get there, and then he'd ignore me the whole time. 😠😠 Thats not even close to worse thing that happened that year. So many people have made fun of me 👎👎But I definately blame him. Im glad that im now much more confident and strong, but im sad that someone had to scar me for life to make me a stronger person 👎👎 It makes you unable to see your worth in future relationships because if they're better than that abusive guy, you'll settle even if the new guy is still a turd. I still fall into that trap sometimes lol. Thankfully I've raised my standards, but again I'm sad that I had to deal with all of that stuff 😕 surely there's easier ways to know your value and gain confidence lol Sorry to dump this under your comment 😂😂

When I found myself unexpectedly single again at age 42, I dated 3 different women who were 28. None went beyond a couple dates because we weren’t able to connect on a personal level although we remained friends. I wound up marrying a smart and beautiful woman 9 years younger than me and we’ve been together and happy for 14 years. She is truly my soulmate and one true love. We both have advanced degrees (me MD her 2 Masters and a PhD) so that was helpful.

When I was 17 nearly 18, I was briefly involved with a significantly older man. As I got older, I realise more and more just how predatory it was. And how disempowering. It did considerable damage to my sexual and emotional development, especially as that was my first sexual experience. I wasn't particularly attracted to him but he manipulated me into it by playing on my vulnerabilities and desires, including bs about how he could see how wonderful I was unlike boys my own age who couldn't appreciate me blah blah blah. He knew - as I know now - how easily you can manipulate a naive, inexperienced, insecure teenager with that sort of stuff. Most women I've talked with or heard/read stories from who've had similar age gap experiences report similar. There are attractive male teenagers. There are even teenagers who have/have had crushes on me. I'm sure I could get one or more of them into a relationship with me. But I don't because I'm aware that there's a power imbalance even without the gender issues and I care about their wellbeing. I don't want to harm someone just so I can get off and feed my ego, which, frankly, is what I think most older men who go after teenagers are doing. It comes from self-focus and entitlement and not considering the wellbeing and needs of the younger person. Just because you find someone attractive and pleasant company, that doesn't mean that you should be in a relationship with them. I never want to do to anyone else what was done to me.

  • @AD-ry7br

@Harvey Smith I completely agree. I see too many women describing as "manipulation" (when they were 16-23ish) the kind of nonsense that even a level headed middle schooler shouldn't have fallen for. It is too easy of a cop out instead of accepting the ego blow that they were probably not an overall desirable/sought after person and got the relationship they deserved. Also, finding someone attractive and pleasant company absolutely is a good enough reason to be in a relationship with them, contrary to what she claims.

I also find it important to point out the societal pressure and ingrained habit of people pleasing in women. I have been 22 with a man who was 44. People pleasing, wanting to make others happy, the school system suppresses our healthy questioning of authority and when older men have seemingly more resources and power, they can come across as authority figure. We are not taught to have a healthy relationship with authority. We are taught to bow down and give up our needs as women to put others before our own. Take this into consideration too great video

I love how people act like the power dynamic doesn’t exist in relationships with closer age gaps. They certainly can. Bottom line is, it’s not really anyone’s business about whether two consenting adults are in a relationship have a large age gap or not. You can have your opinions on it but you can’t tell them not to date just because it doesn’t fit your ideals on relationships. Just as long as they’re legally adults and they’re compatible with each other, it shouldn’t be your concern especially if you don’t know them personally.

I think so. Though, the power imbalance can exist between people with narrow age gap, but big socioeconomic gap. As well, just because the man is 15-20 years older than his woman does not mean that there will be big power imbalance, especially if both partners are serious about listening to each other. Namely, the man avoids being paternalistic and treats the woman as an equal, while the woman listens to her man (instead of dismissing him as an old fogey) and learns from his experience for her own benefit.

I think we're in a transition phase in society and it's leading to a lot of confusion. And in some cases, anxiety and fear, because people don't like uncertainty. I think this is also causing some people to double down on outdated norms. They are outdated because they no longer serve the purpose they served and they conflict with new norms. As for me, I'm hopeful for the future. Traditional gender roles can be fine, for some people. They do work for some people. The problem is forcing them onto everybody. The problem is being assigned a role based on what sex/gender you are, rather than who you are as a person, your context, and what works for you and your partner (or partners). In one period of my life (several years) I did try to fit into a more traditional role and to have relationships with those more traditional gender dynamics. It made me miserable. I felt incredibly confined and like I had to put on a performance and couldn't be myself. Additionally, I quickly lost all sexual interest in my partners. Each time, I ended the relationship or didn't let it even really begin, because I knew that it wouldn't work. I have male friends who've reported a similar experience when they've tried to take on a dominant male role. It just doesn't work for a lot of people, at least not beyond a surface level. It didn't in the 50s or 1900s or 1850s either. Some people look at the past through rose-coloured glasses but the reality is that a lot of marriages back then weren't happy or fulfilling. Slotting people into narrowly defined roles and supposed needs and desires based on sex/gender is foolishness, in my opinion. Trying to follow roles and relationship/sex scripts that don't fit who you are as a person or your relationships is also foolishness and an effective way to make yourself and others unhappy and frustrated.

The reason why large age gap can feel gross is that moral disgust is a thing, and you subscribe to a moral system that sees power imbalances as exploitative, oppressive and wrong. Since relationships with a large age gap inherently involve a power imbalance, you see them as wrong hence gross. But that's just you. To the vast majority of humanity, who doesn't see power imbalance as wrong, relationship with a large age gap appear as perfectly normal and acceptable. Hence why this kind of relationship has been, and still is, the norm worldwide. Bottom line is, you shouldn't overgeneralize your feelings to the rest of humanity, because you're not representative of the average human. You're weird (western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic), which puts you at the extreme end of the distribution for many psychological traits, including morality.

Older women with power and wealth, will look for younger men. Thus, just as there are younger women who find older men attractive, not just for money, there are younger men who find older women attractive, and there is a biological reason for everything that can and has happened.

In any case, the fact that some academics disagree with the evolutionary explanation leads you to summarily conclude that "evolution theory doesn't hold water." That's quite a leap. There is nothing wrong with dissenting views, of course. But to simply dismiss an idea because dissenting views exist is foolish. You may be harboring a bit of confirmation bias yourself, sir

All these sentences here are opinions and peoples personal experiences. My assumption/ opinion is that its a control issue. Insecure individuals who want younger mates to control them and have them join them on their life path without any clashes and keeping them their possession thinking they know whats best. The younger, fresher more niave people are generally the targets who dont have strong opinions and dont know what to do in an increasingly confusing/ changing world. Is it nice to have a partner who is supportive and does not clash with your ideals? Yes . Is it good to manipulate these partners via indoctrination and showing how your ideals are the path to follow and join you on while not allowing them to find thier own likes /interests/ opinions and have experiences to figure it out themselves? No. There are only a very small number of people who genuinely dont want the responsibility of carving their own path and forming their decisions and prefer someone to do that finding it more work/ responsibility preferring to have someone reliable and skilled in that area take up that part of the work . If such individuals go for such people then i guess its alright. If you take that freedom away via manipulation when they prefer to do find their own way then its not correct. This is my opinion. And since everything here are opinions, im allowed mine.

Im unfortunately going to fall in this category. I totally agree with the power dynamics and coercion that might be a factor in large age gap relationships but if the mindsets and places one is in life are similar I don’t see why age should be a problemBut I think there is a lot of truth with the age of 25 being the age where our brains are fully developed because so many bad life choices are made below the age of 25 so I think as of the age of 25 there shouldn’t really be That much concern over coercion or power dynamics factoring into the age age relationships cause at 25 they are capable of understanding the situation fully or should be capable of understanding its implications and ramifications Which will be me I have taken a hard left in my life and which basically puts me back in the starting blocks situationally there is hardly anything different to my life and a fresh out of college. In my time I have gathered a little bit of wisdom and my party energy is somewhat damp and but if the person I find is just starting out in life and fairly wise to the ways of the world I really don’t see a compatibility problem what I doForesee being a problem is emotional baggage on my side or anyone that is older and carries many many negative interactions with them that is probably right for older single ladies too

Because of Pell grants, college loans, and part time work, she can and WILL pay her own way in the US AND re-imburse you for the 10-x20k it cost you to find her and get her here. Once she gets her US citizenship, she will soon become just another US beech, so divorce her and go get another one just like her. 2 years of college will make her an x ray or sonogram tech, able to clear 50k per year, so she'll have no problem giving you 20k that last year of your marriage. If men can date men and women can date women then why can't an older man date a younger woman (over 18 years old)?

Because the Pride Movement is composed by hypocritical cowards. They hide behind the "power dynamics" line but if their daughter was an idiot and brought home the class valedictorian, there's no way in a million years they'd say "oh noes, power dynamics!"

Why is an unequitable or varying dynamics relationship demonized? Not only do I have an Age Gap relationship but I have age gap FRIENDS in their 60s. No one has ever denounced my friendships, calling them "manipulative", "gross", "creepy". Strange that people only rush to these words when love and intimacy is involved. A difference in experiences is only to be expected in AGR's but definitely not worthy to be shunned. An older man can benefit a younger woman in MANY ways and vice versa. After all, isn't a relationship one where both HAPPILY give and take? There's only one thing gross and that is Ageism. Society, especially western, wants you to become invisible or die after 50. By then you are "worthless" to them. THAT is gross.

No one really cares about power dynamics. If their daughter was an airhead and she brought home the class valedictorian for dinner, they wouldn't say "Oh noes, power dynamics! He's going to manipulate her." The fact is, the Pride movement is just full of hypocritical, intellectually dishonest cowards. They say "love is love" and "consent is all that matters", but they don't really believe it. So they invent a bunch of stupid loopholes like the "power dynamics" line.

I've noticed that attractive young women don't marry poor old men but rich ones yes. So I figure if the guy knows he's paying for it and the young woman is ok with the setup no problem. I do find it rather pathetic if the old guy really believes he's a stud. I suppose people have different definitions of what a successful relationship is. As long as both parties are honest with each other and more importantly honest with themselves I figure whatever floats their boats. @@edp3202
