"Perhaps imagining a fair fight is to honor them as life did not." Damn... Bro, that is deep. I love how Kratos' understanding of how Valhalla works. It truly manifests the deepest parts of the person which they themselves don't know about. This DLC seriously feels very personal for Kratos. Like... VERY.

put another way, this interpretation of valhalla is basically free magical therapy. if it were real in today's world there'd be a queue outside the gates (and i'd be in it) 😂😂 or on a more serious note, could also be seen as a analogue for certain psychedelics: powerful therapeutic tools for achieving deep and lasting self-knowledge, but at the risk of grave psychological/physical harm if not tempered by an experienced guide (i.e. Tyr)

Naah lol i dont think people would be happy to literally fight their demons. Kratos himself says he is not ready seeing his younger self the first time. Imagine people that cheated, abused others etc having to repeatedly see their actions in 3rd person again and again. It would probably cause even more trauma@@Joel-cc6hx

@@ssk58607 you make a good point, and i think the experience of everyone who's encountered valhalla (Kratos, Tyr, even the Valkyries who guard it) makes clear that it is as terrifying and potentially fatal an experience as it is clarifying and affirming. Kratos was only ready to face some his old "demons" again after it was long behind him, and even then it was no mean feat even for someone as resilient and stoic as him. and i believe it's the same with any kind of therapeutic practice or journey of self-discovery: it hurts. it hurts bad. and if you don't do it right it'll break you. but if you're ready, when you're ready, and if you're fortunate enough to be guided and supported and loved, it can make you a whole different person.

Remember how Thrud tells Atreus that "were better off without him" Modi was such a piece of shit that Thrud is able to forgive Atreus for murdering her brother so quickly, granted she says so with a slight hint of sadness but yeah. Part of the implication with Modi is that he is either a sadist who likes hurting kids or a straight up pedo based on him asking Magni if "he can have the kid" once they beat Kratos.

So basically fighting them 1v1 is a way of kratos mind honoring them in a fair fight since when they both fought kratos they fought him 2v1. Atreus doesn’t count because he was weak as shit at that time and couldn’t even do anything to modi in cutscenes as seen when midi easily swatted him away when modi sneak attacked kratos after magni died so kratos was fighting them on his own. Since kratos saw them as what Atreus would’ve been if he stayed a dead beat dad like Zeus he kinda felt pity for them.

I take it that Kratos was still a slightly rash and impulsive individual in God of War 2018, fearless with somewhat still selfish tendencies despite him having considerably mellowed out. Hence my surprise at his sudden guilt for Magni and Modi’s fate. Yeah, Kratos does express remorse for Modi’s death because he had a similar experience with Zeus, his own father, but never expressed remorse for Magni’s death. I suppose that upon reflection and seeing how it affected their father despite his negative treatment of his sons, and Odin’s disgusting belittlement of his grandchildren, gave him a new perspective, a reflection that they really were locked in a vicious cycle of violence, which they now had no hope of leaving. Kratos is eternally grateful that Atreus did not had to go through this, but is sad that Thor’s children didn’t have a choice. It’s clear that he sees a lot of himself in Thor.

Precisely. This little bit of dialogue also ties a bit into the main game and now we understand more why Sif was so adamant to educate Thrud and really getting her away from Odin. We know that dying in battle is an honor in Norse Myth but I believe that Sif took it hard when both her sons died and she couldnt handle another child dying over nothing for a man (odin) who is the most manipulative and egotistical god there is. Maybe Thor, Magni and Modi didnt escape that cycle but Thrud is the living proof that it was possible and that is beautiful.

Ngl, I don't really like the idea that Kratos regrets killing Magni, Modi, and Helios, but he doesn't regret killing Hercules. Kratos literally tries talking Hercules down right before their fight because he didn't want to fight his brother, something that he never did with those three.

Still, the difference is that Hercules was a dangerous individual (not because of his strenght, but because of his personality attached to a demigod body, a Kratos 2.0 who would kill Kratos to be the new god of war), killing him was better for the world (unlike Helios, who was only fighting to save his home by any means (even decieving Kratos), and also that Helios saved him and he knew the dark consequences of killing the sun god) For Magni and Modi, he only felt pity.
