Why Kpop no longer cares about Vocals

Kpop has low vocal standard now. But why?
In recent years, Kpop Vocal Standard has decreased noticeably and significantly. Especially this year, after Le Sserafim's questionable Coachella performance and encore stage, followed by ILLIT's controversial encore stage of "Magnetic". And some begin to question whether idols should know how to sing. From 2nd Gen idols' power live vocals to 5th Gen idols' unstable vocals, from being able to sing confidently on encore stage to feeling nervous and unconfident, from live singing to relying on pre-recorded tracks and lip syncs, what happened that led to Kpop idols' vocal skill decline? This video discusses the multiple reasons why Kpop idols nowadays have weaker vocal skills and are placing less emphasis on vocal training. It also discusses the role that K-pop companies played in this change, as well as that of K-pop fans. This decrease in vocal skill and standard is perhaps the biggest problem in Kpop now.

I think I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't mind them not singing live during super complicated choreos but idols should be able to sound fine when standing still or dancing lighter dances. Not naming any names, it applies to everyone. And an idol can of course have a worse day which can make them sound worse but the worse day shouldn't be every day

The way people expect lip syncing and its results and then complain when they hear live singing like they are surprised. But also fr choreography gets harder and no one can sing like that. I always appreciate seeing twice perform more and more in person since they said it would be hard for them to even want to try with how difficult it is. They really are incredible.

Another main factor is that companies care more about music that will go viral then stick within the idols vocal range. Because these idols can SING it's just it's not in their vocal category. As for the clicks for videos and lives etc I also think it's to do with group popularity and the company they come from

This is why I’m grateful that we have SOME groups like BoyNextDoor in the 5th gen who always *try* to sing live. I don’t know why Hybe does so well with training male idols but just sends out any pretty girl to be an idol… And now, after seeing people praise BabyMon for prerecorded vocals and support the tragic lineups from the Iland2 and RUNEXT…it’s scary

i agree cause nowdays even those idols who can sing dont sing live and like hybe where they misuse the talent of their idols, i think le sserafim can sing but their choreography is just too much and another example is illit they should have a concept based on their talent not their visual and songs that fit their vocal range .

The celebration of mediocrity in late 4th going into 5th gen kpop is really disappointing to see. It’s why a lot of groups are putting out these bland, untextured, easy-listen songs. They’ll still chart and sell well (which 100% because fans will just eat up anything) so why try to break the mold at all when you can settle for easy money.

The celebration of mediocrity started when international kids flooded K-Pop and started claiming BP as "The Best" (who were barelly top5 in Korea) and it's only going downhill since... Don't get me wrong though , it's going downhill globally , not only in K-Pop. We're a step closer to "Idiocracy" .

I agree with so much of what you are saying. Recognizing the good vocalists is very good, but fans turn that into dissing the less strong vocalists. That's a shame when they do that. Because I liked this video I am going to subscribe and see what else you come up with. Thanks.

I agree with k-pop choreographies becoming intense. It’s like, yall fans know that the choreographies became much harder then previous years, so why do you hate and blame the idols that are just being told what to do?? And when ya’ll stop stanning vocals and see the consequences of your own actions, you blame the idols for not being able to sing??? You wanted this!!!

Being a second gen stan I totally agree with everything you told. And I also think that second gen stans are pretty good at distinguishing live vocals coz we are more exposed to live content compared to the later gens (ofc second gen does lip sync as well but faaar lesser than now)

I personally think that if someone cares so much about vocals, theyll listen and stan artists who are all about that. Kpop stans care way too much about artists they apparently do not like

And I just wanna put this out there: aespa rarely sings LIVE. I see a scary amount of delusional fans convincing themselves that their pre-recorded vocals are real time live, they are NOT. And this delusional is proof of how this generation of kpop stans are so unused with real live singing that, anything different from the studio version they assume that it must be live. I say that being a big aespa fan myself. And to many disbelief, you can still be a BIG fan and not be delusional about how kpop idols are operating nowadays.

Nah not our fault when one company in particular is speedrunnning Kpop into market oversaturation by creating so many groups without any regard for trainig periods, that's why the idols can't sing, vocals take a long time to be trained unless you're an EXO and only need less than a year of training...these new groups are being picked to debut with the subtext that you never have to worry about singing as long as you look pretty. The worst part is those groups aren't being made for concerts, their songs are for tiktok, their dances are made for reels, and they experience zero growth from day one concept since everything is polished, and if the concept works why should we experiment? kpop is no more, everything organic about it is now put behind veneers.

Something else I would add - is that the standards of vocals have gotten really high. Not saying that people are wrong in calling out idols who struggle to sing these days, I mean the standard for what is good live vocals is almost impossible to reach because of how overly produced and pitch corrected studio vocals are. When we listen to songs with that level of prouction, we tend to expect the same level of pitch perfect sound hearing singers live. Which for some idols is achieveable, and should be, but if you’re just an average singer, it’s extremely difficult to reach that standard. Any slight tonal difference will not match expectations, let alone if an idol is trying to catch their breath and also sing 😂 So that’s also why companies just opt into the lipsync.

i actually think there is a shift in the 5th gen, we see babymonster's songs rise on the charts purely based on their performances on music shows captivating the audiences. kiss of life is also gaining attention (particularly Belle). i think since the pendulum swung too far towards dancing, i can see it slowly but surely shifting back to vocals (or at least balanced vocals/dance importance). furthermore, with the recent trend of several hybe artists injured (beomgyu, minghao, jay, wonhee, hyelin, danielle is what i know off the top of my head) and majority of these injuries being knee/ankle related injuries definitely caused by the intense choreo with no break time (i know most don't consider dance a sport or dancers athletes but it is very high impact on the joints and the potential injuries can rival those gained by even contact sports) shows that this standard is not sustainable. once more that 2 members end up injured at the same time and they have to cancel schedules full-on what there be a shift because it'll finally affect their bottom line lmaoo

the music is extremely bland and boring too. i recently listened to a whole bunch of new songs and could barely find any that are even decent, and many where i found myself wondering wtf is writing this. everyone looks like AI, tiktok trends are the only important thing to companies. kpop was never like this but i feel like that is what made it go mainstream, is that it started to appeal to certain crowds that didnt care as much about those things. idols used to literally win music shows like king of masked singer and now no one hardly goes on there anymore to impress except to maybe sing really easy songs. no one sings korean ballads either which i feel was the most significant change. if you see most covers by idols now are either of another kpop artist or of a western artist. even osts by big 3 idols never go viral anymore. not even in korea. powerhouses exist but again they tend to stick to really mainstream pop songs and not really delve into other genres like they used to.

This is not just a Kpop thing. The most talented musicians/singers are never the most famous. Example: Taylor Swift is the number 1 most famous musical artist in the world (or number 2 if you like Beyonce but the point is Taylor is number 1 or number 2) Now ask yourself: if Taylor Swift is the number 1 (or 2) most famous musical artist, does that make her the number 1 (or 2) most talented singer in the world? Absolutely not. So why is she on top of the music industry? That's because being successful in the music industry doesn't require good vocals or skillfully crafted instrumentals. All that matters is catchiness and marketing. That's why your faves who try so hard and are so talented are getting overshadowed by less talented groups. Their songs either aren't catchy or their companies are failing at marketing them.

am i the only one who doesnt care about lipsyncing that much? i prefer good choreography over live singing (although i still want the idols to sing well). they still have other opportunities to show their live vocals. except ofc if they lipsync in shows like it's live, that's too much (but it happens unfortunately).
