Bad shoes lead to a bad punch...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
What an episode this week. Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy, Bad Blood) joins us to talk about how he’s had to learn to slow down and get back to being himself during points in his life when his career was on the rise and he was focused on pleasing others. Coatesy shares fond memories working with Bruce Willis and Kevin Costner, but also remembers other times on set where he had to stick up for people against difficult, rude talent. We also talk about his special relationship with William Fichtner, how doing a Sons of Anarchy rewatch has made him realize the impact of the show, and what it’s like to work alongside his daughter in the new Neon Lights.

The Last Boy Scout is one of the most under appreciated movies of all time. It is so much fun!
The Last Boy Scout and True Romance are the 2 of the most entertaining movies from the 90s. Both by great late Tony Scott🙌🙌🙌

@@rosselliswilkinson fits so nicely into Shane Black's "trilogy" together with The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Two different individuals teaming up against the world😅 It also shares quite a few setting similarities with True Romance, but that is more due to Scott than Black/Tarantino scripts. You can recognize Tony Scott movie from miles away. Master of lighting/editing🙌

Kim (as Chet) only gets that one scene in The Last Boy Scout before Bruce's character kills him, but he really nailed the asshole antagonist role. Joe Hallenbeck: Can I have a cigarette? Chet: A cigarette? Yeah sure. [gives him one] Joe Hallenbeck: Got a light? Chet: Yeah, got a light. [pretends to give him a light and punches him instead] Chet: Hey baby I thought you were tough. See Pablo, he's no sweat! Joe Hallenbeck: I seem to have dropped my cigarette. May I have another? Chet: [hesitates] Sure, sure thing buddy. [gives him another cigarette] Joe Hallenbeck: I'm gonna need a light. You touch me again, I'll kill ya.
@RobinDale50

And it's all the little nuances that Kim does that makes that character in just 1 scene. All the pauses, glances, reactions. That look of disbelief followed by how he delivers "Sure thing buddy!" just before that last punch that just sends his performance. 2 minutes of screentime and he's one of the most memorable characters in the movie. Kim Coates has always been vastly underrated.

@@RobinDale50 For the life of me, I cannot understand how people consider Last Boy Scout a bad or under-par movie after all this time.
I still talk about the last boy scout. It was a great movie, maybe because I watched it in my formative years. One thing is for certain, I may not have always known Kim Coates's name... But I've always recognized this face. For the longest time anytime anyone needed a smart ass henchman, it seems like they called him. And he's never disappointed me. It got to the point in '90s action movies, that it became a disappointment if he wasn't a part of the production. And I'm certainly glad that he has moved on to bigger and better parts. That run on sons of anarchy was legend, and I really do hope to see him in more.

The first time Kim pinged my radar was Waterworld...he had a magnetic screen presence and just nailed that psychotic whose been too long at sea. His Northern Ireland accent was also spot on.
I’ll never forget that Movie. All around entertaining, well written, perfect casting all around. And…. That movie introduced us to the Beautiful “Halle Berry”. Wow!
Before you tube i only saw interviews with big movie stars on Premiere(Belgian movie review show)But now i can listen to all these great character actors i like so much.
Omg- I had never heard this story before and I just recent met Kim Coates.. great story!! So glad I had him sign my poster from the last Boy Scout. The guy is just super nice and an amazing actor
I'll always remember him as Tig from Sons of Anarchy. His character evolution is some of the best in TV history
Kim Coates is one of those character actors who you recognize no matter what in a movie, but his portrayal of the character is what matters. You know it's Kim, but you also know he is the character as well. And from this interview you come to know he is a pretty down to earth and cool guy. Would love to be sitting at a table with him and William Finctner just listening to the conversation. I'm starting to really like these "Inside of You" interviews that Michael does. His approach is to just sit there and have a conversation, no B.S. or gotcha. Just an hour or so of conversation about work, life, and general shit. Never a dull moment.
First time I ever saw Kim Coates was on CSI: Miami. He had a recurring role on there as some sleeze having a thing with Horatio Caine's ex-wife, played by Elizabeth Berkley, and son. I think it was only like 3-4 episodes, but he was good. Plus, he was the hired gun in Open Range. Wish he would've had more scenes in that movie.
Great story! Working on so many sets from about that same period it’s always great to hear those moments where the rubber meets the road and some top liner is mad cool with respect and toughness. Good on Damon. Met him once on In Living Color and seemed stand up to me. And fantastic movie where that cigarette-punch scene is an all time classic now in my book.

Indeed. I officially have to rewatch this movie now for that scene. And, of course, the classic scene wherein Bruce Willis bags on rap music. Hilarious.
My first encounter with this wonderful man was waterworld
Are there anymore Boy Scout stories? I know it's rumored Tony Scott thought the film was alright...and Willis, Wayans, Joel Silver, and Tony Scott all clashed on this film badly! I wish we could get a blu ray special edition.
Kim Coates must be a straight fit for a Tarantino film.
I love Kim Coates, a wonderful and kind man, very nice and open minded to his fans ❤

It's like Tim Roth talking about him wrecking a car (one of?) his first movie. I wasn't ever an actor really but I've seen stories like this and been part of a couple scenarios as a crew member. You can palpably feel it that you are going to be fired or, at least, yelled at. As Coates says here, it was somewhat out of his control. Lots of respect for the stunt guy to back him up.

Bruce was probably like "was it good tho let me see the footage"
I've loved that movie since the day I saw it. It's unfortunately a bit under rated as far as 90's action movies go. I'm sad it never got the sequel that was hinted at that the end. And I think things like this are part of the reason why dress shoes now have rubber on the bottoms of them.
Is that the take they used?
My friend worked as an AD on one of Kim Coates's shows for Snapchat and said he was the biggest douche bag he had ever encountered on this planet, so it makes sense that this guy would make up a story about him 'punching' someone just to sound tough. If you've been through enough acting auditions you can tell that this guys act is a put-on. he's a total fake egotistical phony supposed tough guy. And the host is guilty for encouraging him; "Oh, you robbed a bank 7 times, let's hear about that..."
