Why Josee The Tiger And The Fish Is So Beautiful

Фильм және анимация

Josee, The Tiger And The Fish is a film that screams autonomously of its beauty. The romance film incorporates many different applicable morals that are highly relevant in our society today. The animation helps define the social conducts such as selflessness and differences within lifestyles. Today, I talk about why this film is so beautiful.

    I just finished this film and what I like about it is Tsuneo’s sympathy hidden behind a lack of dialogue. He’s all action, his patience was immaculate. Josee’s lack of social awareness was also a good perspective, her abrasiveness towards Tsuneo and her fear of people as well as the gradual realization that she should develop a sense of independence was tragically beautiful. The fact that she tried to run away at the end was, to me, a good representation of how hard it is to actually change. I see some people have no patience with Josee and to me that’s a gross misunderstanding of the core values the film highlights.

    I think conceptually some people understand films in different ways and that's totally fine! I do have to completely agree with you on Tsuneo, however. His patience was absolutely top-tier and you could tell by his actions and thoughts as he progressively becomes changed throughout the film. Both character developments had many different morals you could have learned and I think what you said was absolutely right about the characters! (:

    There's a difference between patience and masochism. Being called a servant and threatened is not abuse that someone should feel obligated to endure, whether they're handling a disabled person or not. If anything, feeling obligated to endure such abuse is only further pushing the narrative of special treatment. Patience is being helpful to people who need/want it, but when it becomes costly to yourself or when that person is lashing out at you in return, that patience soon becomes complacency. It's a huge factor in stockholm syndrome.

    Things i loved about how the movie delivered its message : - how at first josee would ask tsuneo to do absurd things like count the tiles, and it would annoy the hell out of him.. Because he couldn't really understand that this was basically her everyday life. - i loved how the romance started when tsuneo got interested in something that characterized josee. This happened when he was about to quit this job, but walks into josee's room to find the beautiful paintings of the sea, the very sea that he knows by heart, but it's completely different, and it's much more magical. That's when i think tsuneo first saw josee as an interesting person and more than just a disabled girl who makes his life hell. This is also definitely related to the fact that tsuneo himself is attached to the sea, and has a weakness for anyone attached to it as well. - i loved how he keeps trying to understand her all the time. When she didn't feel well after he took her ro his shop (which must have been because she was frustrated she couldn't really fit into his world like his other friends did) he tells her immediately that he doesn't understand why she acts like that, but still tries to reach out to her, and tells her about his childhood dream, in hopes that she would open up too. -and of course i loovvedd when everything went wrong in the car crash scene and the scene before it. Here josee finally speaks her frustration out loud, how everything to her is "out of reach" and how tsuneo couldn't possibly understand, so it was easy for him to say things like "don't give up on your dream".... I loved how after she shoves the truth in his face, he doesn't get a chance to reply, and then right after he gets to experience for himself what "out of reach" really means. -in the same accident scene, josed tries to reach tsuneo, but the lady in the car gets there, and we see how in josee's eyes, all she can see in the lady's legs, the thing keeping things out of reach for her. -one of the things i love most about this romance is that both of them have their own lives and their own problems, they come to fall in love as they understand each other and help each other out with their respective problems. - the children's story that josee told was absolutely beautiful, there's just no reason not to love it. - i have a weakness for josee's character and how she comes to develop. I love how she wants to "fight the tiger on her own." and that doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't want to rely on anyone, rather, it means that she wants to be able to face her fears and overcome them on her own, she wants to be her own support.

    i agree with some of your point. but in case of the accident and "not reaching your dreams". josee wanted to be an illustrator which he can accomplish by being in a wheelchair whereas tsuneo wanted to go to mexico to experience the sea and dive which can't be possible without his legs. so that comparison doesnt really stand

  • @emanelnagar4858

    @emanelnagar4858

    @@bruddaosas3940 Being in a wheelchair limited her options. She was told that she couldn't risk starting something as unstable as being an illustrator, she was told to give it up for a regular 9 to 5 job in order to be able to continue on paying her expenses, unless she was going to marry someone and rely on them providing for her (which is what she didn't want to burden anyone with, she knows she'd be alot for one person to handle) .. If she didn't try and "stand on her own two feet" or "face the tiger on her own" otherwise, she'd always need a Tsuneo by her side to hold on to.. And by the end of the film, we see that she was able to accomplish that. Being "out of reach" meant she didn't have the luxury to pursue it, and not necessarily that it was literally physically out of reach like some stuff have always been for her and like how things were like with Tsuneo not being able to go to Mexico.

    I agree with everything you have stated. I loved how in the movie, they didn’t give up their dreams for each other. I absolutely loved how she didn’t want him to give up and wanted him to pursue his dream despite everything that had happened, compared to the other girl wanting him to give up on his dreams for her own selfish love. This romance was just beautiful in all aspects and I would definitely rewatch it. It’s the first romance movie where I have seen the main characters have dreams and go through many difficulties but also understand each other and put their dreams first.

    As a person in a wheelchair I can tell you this film is a lot more than you addressed in the video: 1. This movies came out at the same time as the Paralympics in japane. So It's an big advertisement to show the world ppl with disabilities are welcome in our country. ( Which in reality at least for native japanese ppl this isn't quite the case). 2. I love that Josey isn't able to walk at the end of the movie. Instead she learned to live her best live with her disability and to be independent. 3 I like that Tsuneo follows his own dream and don't give up on that to be with Josey but instead they are depicted as a couple who supports each others goals. Fun fact Josey has though out the movie two different chair types. The first one is a standard hospital chair which doesn't give the user much flexibility the second one is a hybrid whth a joystick attached to her armrests. It also came with a power adapter for her push rims so she can move more freely. 😊

    Man, I just watched this movie around half a year ago, and I remember that my first thought after finishing it was how insanely underrated it is. Idk if its the fact that it was late to recieve a streaming service or that it premiered on the middle of the pandemic, but it's so insanely good????! And last december I watched the first adaption of the short story, the live-action from 2003, to see how much it deviated. And it such an incredibly pessimistic movie lol and it made me appreciate one of my favorite things about this animated version: I LOVE the fact that Tsuneo got into the accident, because it serves as the same thing as trying (Josee's) shoes. Before that happens Kumiko said to him that there was no point on him trying to support or encourage her cus, ultimately, they were different and he doesn't know what it feels to be /her/. And for Tsuneo to ACTUALLY understand the kind of hopelessness that Kumiko felt for many years insanely helped to make their bond more unique. Cus then it didn't become a story of a non-disabled person helping a disabled one, or a disabled person showing another perspective to a non-disabled one, but it became a movie about two people that experienced similar situations that taught each other the very same lesson: to never stop working to achieve their dreams. And the fact that Kumiko learnt that, not because Tsuneo insisted, but because of personal insight and meditation once she saw that Tsuneo lost HIS desire to achieve his dreams, It really helps with her personal arc of learning to survive by herself. Both movies have this moment where Kumiko realizes that she needs to be independent and not drag others with her (in this one, it was when she was planning to distance herself from Tsuneo and his friends after confronting the Tiger in the zoo by herself, it was the moment she realized she actually can live alone and not depend on anyone) but this movie adds the beautiful act of Tsuneo still chasing after her and showing her she doesn't need to be isolated to be independent. Thing that the live-action lacks since Tsuneo sort of gives up on trying to be close to Kumiko after she distances from him.

  • @Juhnime

    @Juhnime

    Hello! I haven't watched the live-action adaptation of the movie that released in 2003, but man, you're analysis was pretty insane! I definitely agree with you when it comes to Tsuneo being able to partake in the lifestyle of Kumiko through the accident that he unexpectedly experiences. Being able to experience things and view things from the perspective of another individual is such a difficult yet amazing thing to do. The uniqueness of the film really comes from the idea of two individuals that are totally different yet so similar in ways that progress and show through the movie's process. It's certainly beautiful and it really opened my eyes as to what I could potentially do for all the different things in life. (:

    @@Juhnime yeah it's a beautiful and optimistic movie overall. I also love how they managed to let Tsuneo and Kumiko become a couple at the end while still being faithful to their characters. Having a long distance relationship is a clever way to show that being in a romantic relationship doesn't necessarily mean giving up yourself to someone else, but being able to grown and develop individually while also being able to share with someone else.

    Great video. I am physically disabled myself. Though I don't use a wheelchair now, my youth was spent in and out of wheelchairs, and this movie hit me hard. That scene at the train station is just so incredibly well done, and just hit so close to home. Her difficulty navigating a world not equipped for her while seeing people's reactions to her was real. People *do* look at you, at treat you so differently when you're visibly disabled, and it sucks. I hope this movie spreads kindness and empathy to the world.

Josee fights through her own lack of sympathy to help her caretaker remember his and stop felling sorry for himself.

    This. I think I realized I missed on some points that could have been highlighted a little bit more. But on the other hand, stories are meant to be interpreted differently, so it's always new and intriguing to know that re-watching the show can bring forth a new perspective you hadn't seen before. But, yes, I totally agree with your point. The idea of fear and it pushing to fight harder is definitely a directly reflection of Josee.

    This movie suffered from not enough runtime (perhaps another hour would've helped flesh out some of its plot points) and a bit too many cliches. But I REALLY like how it portrays disability, how instead of Josee saying it out loud, they show it by how Josee interacts with the world, the general feeling of being a nuisance to society, and having people laugh at her dream of being an artist. What touched my heart the most was her simple amazement reacting to Tsuneo talking about being a diver; the sheer joy and excitement of staring at the plane from the train window. These were such things so easily accessible to able-bodied people like myself, that seeing the pure wonder emanating from her reminded me that I didn't appreciate my opportunities enough, and that I was born much luckier than a whole lot of people already. For there are absolutely people like Josee this very instant, confined to their shackles due to circumstances beyond their control. I love it when a show widens my horizons like that.

  • @Juhnime

    @Juhnime

    I agree with you. Honestly, the movie felt rushed initially and I felt that with a more dedicated runtime, the story would have been better showcased. But in the end, the show not only visually portrayed the problems that Josee internally was conflicted with, but it also gave us the perspective of Tsuneo and how he had to handle his own struggles and face his own obstacles. I came to love the film as a whole, especially through the beautiful visuals and morals that it provided. (:

    Thank you for putting this video up - I honestly wish more people were talking about this beautiful film. I can say that the film gets a heck of a lot right; my first year out of uni I spent supporting disabled students, and so many of Josee's struggles and frustrations ring true. But more than that, I love the fact that here we have a film with someone who's disabled as a lead character, and it neither patronises them, nor is about their disability - it is about *them*. Music is great, symbolism is great, the two lead characters are developed realistically and beautifully - if I had any quibble, a few more minutes could have fleshed the secondary characters more, but tbh that doesn't really spoil the enjoyment. I read that this is Kotaro Tamura's first film as director - I think we can expect further great work from him in the future! Oh yeah, and this makes me want to visit Osaka...

    I can see myself in Josee a lot. I currently suffer from hemiplegia after removing a tumor from my brain. I have experienced this paralysis since I was 5 and lost a lot of mobility in my left-hand fingers and leg but I managed to get myself to walk again it was just not the same as everyone. I rely on using my right side of the body more than my left side because I can't control it as much. At the end of high school, I want to be a digital artist but I know it is going to be difficult using only one hand to do everything. But I'm still trying, I went through a lot of depression because I have always been reminded of my reality a lot that I should find a job that would be both stable and high-paid to feed myself. I never get that. I rebelled against the idea of doing a job just because it good paid to feed myself. I was scared of the idea of working in a job where I work my life away just to remain in a stable lifestyle. So I cried, I cry a lot and I was about to accept the life everyone set up for me. Tears bring nothing to me or anyone. But then I remember that there are many years to come and I still have time to set my career as an artist. It just going to take longer than most I just need to keep myself motivated until then.

    Hello! I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story on my channel. It seems like you’ve been and are currently going through a tough and difficult time, especially with your difficulty with mobility. I just wanted to say it’s personally so inspiring to see how mentally strong you are even to think about striving as an artist. With the amount of effort and want to strive, I’m sure you’ll be able to thoroughly take the route to reach your dreams and goals, and if in the worst case it doesn’t happen, you can still happily and proudly say that you tried. Giving up on anything is the worst and the most regretful thing you can do. I want to personally cheer on for you and really hope that you get to experience the best of the best through your amazing strive. Keep it up! I’m always willing to listen if you ever need to talk through things! (:

    I love this movie a lot because I can kind of relate to it: I've been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which I might have inheritted from my mother. It's a very difficult illness to live with and it requires me to take medicine every single day. In fact, skipping medicine may be very dangerous and can result in me developing psychosis or slipping into psychosis. There are people out there who which to experience psychosis and even take drugs to undergo it, without knowing the huge risk associated with it and how life-threatening it can be. It is very dangerous. I also love to draw like Josee, but due to my disability I can not draw from the top of my had and need to rely on looking at pictures and other drawings. The movie is great because it teaches that you can only fully understand a person until you go through what that person has experienced or what that person is suffering from. Someone I know experienced psychosis and currently has to relearn how to walk and his pain must be very similar to Josee's. So whenever I see this movie I have to think of what he is going through. Even though I suffer from schizophrenia myself I don't really understand him fully. Despite my sickness I am very grateful that medicine that helps me exists and the one I am currently taking helps me so much. Instead of being scared of people like me, I think we should find more ways to be sympathetic.

    I think in terms of adapting from books perspective this movie done a really better job not only just showing romance and realism like how the book and the live action movie shows, this anime done more than that and actually shows how the character affected each other not only emotionally but also physically, despite what reality offer to each of the characters they work together influence each other to become better and also i like how they gave the characters an actual personality and dream unlike the live action movie, yes i do have to say that sometimes the whole thing could get a little bit unrealisticly positive in the movie but i like it, it gives a more hopefull and inspiring message for people than the book or live action movie could...

    Y'know, when I saw the movie I was kinda like, miffed, because Tsuneo didn't do much wrong and man still went to save Josee despite the risk. But I think I get what you're saying. I get ya. I can understand why people feel that way and feel bad for 'em, so like, sympathy, but I can't fully get the way they think, so I can't truly empathise and share their entire grief. Took me a while to get whatchu said tho because the definitions of both words are so difficult lol. It was a real interesting movie, 'cus like it's got a message of selflessness, but Japan in the giving index is rock-bottom...so the topic tackled was refreshing. 'Specially since now, there's so much stuff 'bout neurodiversity, so like, we can feel bad for 'em, but honestly, we'll never be able to see the world they do. But like, like Tsuneo in the earlier half, that ain't so bad. He saw Josee's drawings of the sea and like, it's a whole new way of seeing the sea for him, since Josee's never gone diving. And through getting to know her, despite not understanding all her grief fully, he still jumped in to save her from the car, still cares about her. It's cool--like, we don't need to fully be in other people's shoes to want to help and care for 'em. It's hard, sure, dealing with 'em, with the arguments that they had and stuff, but it's like, the last half where everyone, not just Tsuneo who got to know her so well, went looking for Josee too. Ya know? Damn it, I'm not good at this, which is why I think your video's neat. You're real good at writing, and you got a good voice! TBH I came to the movie since I really liked Eve's songs, those parts were my favourite too lol, but the lessons and message was like, feel-good. Man. Also the VAs accents were refreshing xD Also yeah, this vid got recommended on the sidebar right after I clicked on Ao No Waltz. Man you doing numbers! congratz! But I’m glad you understand the majority of what was being said. Sympathy is definitely something that we experience and learn to grasp throughout our lives. Whether we’ll ever understand the full details of it or not depends on the situation/case, but I’m sure we’ll all be able to share our feelings with another and be able to sympathize with whomever with the experience that we have! You keep saying "sympathy" when you actually mean "empathy". Sympathy is simply feeling sorry for another person who is suffering regardless of context. Empathy, in contrast, is the ability to understand another person's feelings and emotions - not even always negative ones. I know this isn't really the point, but I had to say something when the script described sympathy, then declared that it is not sympathy, due to actually talking about empathy instead.

    It's a bit sad that the movie never touches on how Josee got her condition or how her parents died, but I think it is pretty easy to put two and two together, so I am about 90% sure she was involved in the same accident that killed her parents.

  • @Juhnime

    @Juhnime

    Hi! I think it’s difficult to get in touch with how/why Josee is like how she is (in terms of her condition). It could be a medical condition that she was born with (which is my assumption), or it could be that she was in an accident that caused her to lose her ability to walk. Regardless I feel that it’s more compelling that she was born with a disability because of her existential desire to be able to be “free.” I feel that the story is told in a manner that implies that Josee’s desire to freely swim in the water is a direct reflection of her wanting to know what it’s like to be able to freely walk without a support system, such as her wheelchair. But of course, this is my interpretation. There are probably sources out there on the internet that does describe the backstory of Josee (as this is more than an Anime film -> IRL movies).
